    Middlesex 262-8 v Northants 219

A lead of 43 could be very useful indeed for the hosts, who will be grateful for another very valuable innings from Ryan Higgins.

He's picked up his 6th 50 of the Championship summer and gone past 500 runs for the season along the way.

  4. Back underway at Canterburypublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 11 July 2023

    Kent 171 v Warwickshire 442-6

The covers were on at tea and there have been spots of rain in the air. The groundstaff are loitering by the edge of the field too, which is never a good sign, but we have cricket, for now! Arshdeep takes the opening over after the interval, bowling to Rob Yates who is unbeaten on 186.

  5. Tea at Durhampublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 11 July 2023

    Durham 242-4 v Glos 316

A chastening session of play ends for Gloucestershire as Durham, led by Lees - bat with great fluency and confidence throughout to take the innings gap below 100.

Apart from a miscued drive by Lees which squirted the ball just past his leg stump just before the break, a very fine, fluent innings from the opener.

    Surrey 355 v Nottinghamshire 139-1

After the umpires ordered a 4pm re-start, the rain had other ideas.

The covers are back out in the middle and Notts must wait to continue their reply to Surrey's 355 all out.

    Durham 242-4 v Glos 316

Lees moves on to 134 with a miscued cover drive which scoops the ball down to fine leg for four off an inside edge. More frustration for Gloucester.

    Durham trail by 74.

    Middlesex 250-8 v Northants 219

Higgins drives Taylor to Sanderson at wide mid on.

Sanderson shies at the stumps and Higgins sprints a single to take Middlesex to only their second batting point of the season.

The 250 comes up in the 67th over.

  9. Maxwell value not just measured in runspublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 11 July 2023

    Kent 171 v Warwickshire 442-6 - tea

    Mike Taylor
    BBC WM

Much of the comment from within the Warwickshire squad about Glenn Maxwell’s time in Birmingham over the last few weeks has been about how there are other ways to measure his value than just weight of runs.

They have valued him as a mentor, setting high professional standards. In 14 Blast innings he scored at speed, though never for long.

But given an unexpected chance to play in the Championship by Hasan Ali’s early departure to Pakistan, and the ideal platform, he cruised to 81 from only 67 balls without ever seeming to move into top gear. Many of his boundaries were simply classical strokes hit particularly hard.

Matt Quinn dismissed him, edging a hook, but it was a mixed blessing as Rob Yates took up the charge for bonus points. About 24 hours after he started the innings, Yates became the freer-scoring partner for the first time.

His third 50, taking him past his previous first-class best, was by far his fastest, and he celebrated by planting a straight six through a glass panel at the front of the home dressing room – adding insult and some minor structural damage, if hopefully not injury, to Kent’s troubles.

Nothing rained on Warwickshire’s parade apart from some spots of moisture in the final over before tea. The covers have just been called for, but even if it pours now, Warwickshire will still have had a profitable day.

  12. Postpublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 11 July 2023

    Middlesex 248-8 v Northants 219

Roland-Jones gets a streaky four edging a drive just wide of second slip and through to third man for four.

His next scoring stroke is far more convincing, driving down the ground for four more.

    29 ahead now.

WICKET Rew lbw b Vince 221published at 15:57 British Summer Time 11 July 2023

    Somerset 500 v Hampshire

James Vince punches the air. He's trapped James Rew plumb infront for 221. He took a big swing across the line and didn't connect.

Lovely scenes as the 19-year-old walks off, plenty of handshakes from Hampshire players, applause all around the County Ground.

A coming of age knock? He's 19 and he already had four centuries this season, so it's hard to say. But it's another chapter in perhaps the most exciting story in English cricket right now.

From 80-5 to 500 all-out, Rew and Somerset have turned things around in style. Shoaib Bashir finishes unbeaten on 44.

  14. 50 runs

50 for Ryan Higginspublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 11 July 2023

    Middlesex 238-8 v Northants 219

Higgins pulls Keogh through square leg for four to get to 46.

Two balls later he nutmegs first slip with a reverse sweep for four - and that's 50 off 85 balls with a total of five fours.

He's also passed 500 Championship runs for the season.

  15. Latest from The Ovalpublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 11 July 2023

    Surrey 355 v Notts 139-1

The rain has made itself scarce and we are set to resume at 4pm.

There are another 43.2 overs to bowl in the day.

Haseeb Hameed and Will Young have so far added 112 for Nottinghamshire's second wicket.

  16. Postpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 11 July 2023

    Durham 227-4 v Glos 316

Another leg stump ball from Akhter is whipped away to backward square by Lees for four.

Four more runs to Lees flicked through square leg off Ollie Price at the other end.

  17. Postpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 11 July 2023

    Lancs v Essex 232-5

There is very little in this Stanley Park pitch for the bowlers with this old ball. Jack Blatherwick drops short and Simon Harmer square cuts for four. He is five not out and Tom Westley has 117.

partnership for the 10th Somerset wicketpublished at 15:51 British Summer Time 11 July 2023

    Somerset 493-9 v Hampshire

Shoaib Bashir has played superbly for 40 from 53 (Bashball?) while You Know Rew has 218 from 306.

The hosts are closing in on 500, having been 80-5. What a turnaround.

WICKET Eskinazi c Gay b Taylor 8published at 15:48 British Summer Time 11 July 2023

    Middlesex 230-8 v northants 219

Big appeal for LBW by Taylor against Eskinazi but it looks leg side and is ruled not out.

Two runs for Eskinazi off the next ball, clipped to square leg.

Out! Edged and caught low at a wide second slip by Emilio Gay.

Middlesex skipper Toby Roland-Jones is in next.

  20. Tea at Canterburypublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 11 July 2023

    Kent 171 v Warwickshire 442-6

Warwickshire lead by 271 runs with four wickets remaining at tea on day two. Yikes.

Rob Yates has 186 from 373 balls while Michael Burgess has 36 from 49 at the other end. Kent look weary and short of ideas on a docile pitch.
