    Lancs 116-8 v Essex 282

    It's a procession.

Lancashire lose their fourth wicket for just two runs added as Jack Blatherwick becomes Paul Walter's third victim.

He has no answer to an inswinging yorker and the umpires decide that his dismissal is the end of the extended morning session.

Phil Salt is 23 not out, but Lancashire are still 166 behind and yet to make certain of no having to follow-on.

  2. Postpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Middlesex 277 v Northants 219 & 111-2 - lead by 53

    Maiden from De Caires.

Tom Helm continue from the other end and his fifth ball really takes off outside the line of off stump and Simpson takes it at head height behind the stumps.

The last ball is very full and squeezed away to backward point by Procter for a single.

Tough runs out there this afternoon.

  3. wicket

    WICKET Hartley c A Cook b Walter 0published at 13:30 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Lancs 116-7 v Essex 282

Three in three for Essex - and a golden duck for Tom Hartley.

He plays defensively at a decent delivery and Alastair Cook makes no mistake with the catch at first slip.

Paul Walter now has 2-3 midway through his second over.

  4. wicket

WICKET De Grandhomme lbw Cook 0published at 13:28 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Lancs 115-6 v Essex 282

Very much Essex's morning as two go in successive overs at Stanley Park.

Josh Bohannon falls for the trap as he diverts a ball from left-armer to Paul Walter to Simon Harmer at leg slip, having made 44 from 107 faced.

And Colin de Grandhomme only lasts two deliveries as he is trapped in front by the persevering Sam Cook.

  5. Exciting finish in prospect at Hovepublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Sussex 402 v Derbyshire 341-7 - lunch

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

An entertaining morning at Hove 129 runs scored and four wickets falling has left this game in the balance, with the visitors trailing by 61 at lunch.

The new ball held the key with Sussex picking up three wickets including that of centurion Brooke Guest, who batted beautifully for his sixth first-class hundred

With both sides needing wins to enhance their promotion push this could still be an exciting game with 70 overs left in the day, plus a full complement and a decent forecast tomorrow

  6. Play resumes at Merchant Taylors'published at 13:25 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Middlesex 277 v Northants 219 & 109-2 - lead by 51

The visitors were 60-2 when Emilio Gay retired hurt with a knee injury but Whiteman and Procter have looked quite comfortable at the crease for the most part since then.

Some turn in evidence for off spinner De Caires this morning, who also bowled with good flight.

Tea will be taken at 15:50 BST either side of revised sessions of play.

De Caires continues from the Lake End, round the wicket, to Procter.

Ollie Price is in at number three - and he edges his second ball between slip and gully for four.

    Kent 171 & 127-3 v Warwickshire 549-7 dec - lunch

    Mike Taylor
    BBC WM

Warwickshire were under no illusions last night that they would find it harder work to dismiss Kent a second time than on Monday, so the two wickets they claimed before rain brought a slightly early lunch will have felt satisfactory enough.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby may have been put a little in the shade by Chris Rushworth’s arrival at the county, but he is now over halfway to matching last season’s total of 53 Championship wickets.

Not expecting much assistance from the pitch or the ball, Warwickshire’s seamers settled largely on setting the same exam paper that Kent failed on Monday – consistently asking batters to decide whether or not to play balls close to off-stump.

The exception was Henry Brookes, who spent five muscular overs trying to bowl awkward bouncers. It was a tough job, but he found enough life to hit Ben Compton on the shoulder as the opener seemed uncertain whether to play or sway.

Hannon-Dalby reverted to the set text, and Compton feathered a ball through to Michael Burgess for the second time in the match. Joe Denly’s Championship form has been ghastly, but he seemed refreshed in this innings with a series of punchy back-foot drives until on 45, he touched a ball on to his pad and looped a catch to Burgess.

Jack Leaning and Harry Finch saw Kent through until the rain, but they will be forgiven for hoping the cloud hangs around.

    Durham 453 v Glos 316 & 1-0

Charlesworth is off the mark to the fourth ball, pushed through point for a single.

    Dent leaves outside off.

Matt Potts will bowl from the other end.

  11. 'Match to remember' for Somerset youngsterspublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Somerset 500 v Hampshire 138-6

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

Somerset's 19 year olds are having a match to remember.

Following hard on the heels of James Rew's double century, Alfie Ogborne picked up a first Championship wicket to remember when he had James Vince taken in the slips, while off-spinner Shoaib Bashir came to the party with the wickets of Liam Dawson - caught on the boundary by Ogborne - and James Fuller.

It all added up to an unexpectedly successful morning for Somerset, as they picked up four wickets at the cost of just 81 runs, and in so doing brought the follow-on into the reckoning, although this is still a more than decent batting pitch.

  12. Bright sunshine at Riversidepublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Durham 453 v Gloucs 316 & 0-0

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Gloucestershire openers Chris Dent and Ben Charlesworth were out in the middle, ready to begin their second innings, when the players had to leave the field because of a downpour.

The worst of the morning weather had just missed the ground, but this was enough to bring an early lunch in Chester-le-Street.

Play will resume at 1.20pm with 79 overs left in the day. That means 15 have been lost so far. We also have bright sunshine. It's like another day entirely.

    Durham 453 v Glos 316 & 0-0

We took an early lunch after some heavy Riverside rain earlier, but we're good to go now.

Ben Charlesworth will wield the willow first up with Chris Dent.

I've said this before - Ben Raine will bowl. This time I'll add "weather permitting".

Charlesworth on strike. 79 overs left. In theory.

In theory also, tea will be taken at 1540 BST.

  14. Lunch at Hovepublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Sussex 402 v Derbyshire 341-7

Sam Conners pulls Nathan McAndrew for six over square leg in the penultimate over before the interval at Hove.

The visitors are now only 61 behind, with Conners 25 not out and Alex Thomson on nine.

Brooke Guest completed his first century of the season earlier on, before he was lbw for 105 to Ari Karvelas, who also added the wicket of Anuj Dal.

Derbyshire skipper Leus du Plooy made 53 and now has 851 runs for the season.

  15. Lunch at The Ovalpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Surrey 355 v Notts 366-7

Calvin Harrison glances Will Jacks for four in the final over of the morning at The Oval as Notts go into lunch 11 runs in front.

They have added 118 to their 248-5 at the start with Will Young finally departing for 145, caught behind - of was it stumped? - by Ben Foakes.

Harrison is 24 not out and Lyndon James a patient 30 from 73 balls faced.

  16. Lunch at Cardiffpublished at 13:13 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Glamorgan 86-5 v Leicestershire

Following a delayed start, it's been a tough morning for Glamorgan in this rain-affected match.

They have added 32 to their overnight 54-1 and lost Sam Northeast, Zain ul-Hassan, Kiran Carlson and Billy Root.

Maximum bowling points is the first order of business for second-placed Leicestershire, if they have time enough between showers to secure them.

    Somerset 500 v Hampshire 138-6

A fairly disastrous morning session for the visitors, if truth be told.

They resumed on 58-2 and lost a succession of wickets in the opening hour, generally owing to poor shot selection rather than particularly good bowling.

A day to remember though for debutant Alfie Ogborne who got James Vince, while fellow 19-year-old Shoaib Bashir has two wickets, including that of his fellow spinning all-rounder Liam Dawson, caught by Ogborne attempting an injudicious slog-sweep for six.

Ben Brown and Felix Organ have mounted a recovery of sorts with a 46-run partnership but need to build a monster stand here to avoid the follow-on with Somerset still more than 350-runs ahead and no weather on the horizon to come to their aid.

Lancashire's 100 comes up as Phil Salt drives Jamie Porter uppishly down the ground for four.

It wasn't that far from the bowler's left hand - but was back past him before he could react.

  19. Postpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Surrey 355 v Notts 354-7

Tom Lawes comes into the attack for Surrey and Calvin Harrison's off-drive for four takes the total past 350 and earns Notts a third batting point. A single follows and Harrison is 16 not out, with Lyndon James on 26.

The expected rain arrives at New Road - and off they go for lunch, 16 minutes ahead of the scheduled 1.10 interval.

Just five balls after the fall of Matthew Waite's wicket, new Worcestershire batsman Joe Leach finds himself back in the hutch again in time for the pre-prandial drinks.

The Pears still have a battle on to avoid being asked to follow on though. They are still 139 away from that primary landmark.

After that T20 quarter-final nightmare on Friday night, the day after news broke of the loss of the two of their brightest talents to Nottinghamshire, the Pears' season is in danger of imploding.
