  1. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Canterburypublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Kent 171 & 127-3 v Warwickshire 549-7 dec

The rain has arrived, much to Warwickshire's frustration. Expect that will mean an early lunch.

Warwickshire's morning, again. Ben Compton and Joe Denly resumed this morning with aspirations of seeing out the session, only to fall for 26 and 45 respectively - both to catches by keeper Michael Burgess off Oliver Hannon-Dalby, who has six for the match.

Harry Finch and Jack Leaning have a simple task. Bat throughout the afternoon to reduce the deficit of 251. Can they do that? We'll see, once the showers skid over east Kent.

  2. wicket

WICKET Jones c Buttleman b Bracewell 11published at 12:51 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Lancs 90-4 v Essex 282

Lancashire are suddenly in a bit of trouble at Stanley Park.

Rob Jones wafts at a wide ball from Doug Bracewell and keeper Will Buttleman only has to take two steps to his right to take an easy catch.

Phil Salt is the new batter, with John Bohannon still there on 42.

  3. Postpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Surrey 355 v Notts 337-7

Notts are nearing parity despite the loss of Will Young.

Calvin Harrison climbs into a Will Jacks delivery after skipping down the pitch and smears it to mid-wicket for four.

Jamie Overton steams in for the next over and Harrison flicks just wide of leg-slip for four more.

    Middlesex 277 v Northants 219 & 109-2 - lead by 51

We must always add "weather permitting" of course.

But I dare say we'll fare a little better than the games further west.

  5. wicket

WICKET Waite c Bean b Steketee 11published at 12:47 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Yorkshire 407, Worcestershire 119-6

    Mark Steketee strikes again.

Yorkshire old boy Matthew Waite is caught low down in the gully.

  6. Division Two Updatepublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

Away from our featured match between Durham and Gloucestershire, here is the latest...

Glamorgan's game against Leicestershire has been the worst affected of our Championship games in the round, where we're only in the 27th over of the game.

The hosts are 73-4 at Cardiff, with two wickets each falling to Chris Wright and Matt Salisbury.

Derbyshire are 307-6 against Sussex at Hove, trailing the hosts by 95.

Henry Shipley has taken 3-84 to date.

At New Road, Worcestershire are struggling against Yorkshire, on 111-5.

Ed Pollock was the last batter to go, caught by Adam Lyth off the bowling of Mark Steketee for a duck.

  7. wicket

WICKET Young c Foakes b Jacks 145published at 12:41 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Surrey 355 v Notts 326-7

After one over at the start of play, spinner Will Jacks is called on again by Surrey.

And it only takes him one ball to bring Will Young's magnificent debut innings for Notts to an end.

The New Zealander tries a reverse sweep and Ben Foakes takes the catch and then whips off the bails for a potential stumping just in case the umpire didn't see the edge. He did.

  8. Postpublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Lancs 83-3 v Essex 282

Important innings for Rob Jones following the loss of those two quick Lancashire wickets.

A friendly full toss from Sam Cook - was he looking for a yorker? - enables the right-hander to collect his first boundary past mid-on.

  9. Play due to resume at 1320 BST in Durhampublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Durham 453 v Glos 316 & 0-0

We're not quite free of the rainy elements hovering around the ground, but hopefully the worst is over.

Gloucester will begin 137 runs behind.

up for Kentpublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Kent 171 & 101-3 v Warwickshire 549-7 dec

They're going to need another few of these to make Warwickshire bat again, but it's a milestone along the way.

Harry Finch brings it up with a single off Chris Rushworth to move to eight, the same score as skipper Jack Leaning.

    277 behind.

  11. 6 runs

Postpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Surrey 355 v Notts 325-6

Will Young ends Nottinghamshire's boundary drought by hooking a short one from Jamie Overton for four.

The Surrey paceman tries another bouncer and this time YOung clears the rope, although it wasn't too far away from fielder Dan Worrall.

Young advances to 145 not out.

  12. 6 runs

for Felix Organpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Somerset 500 v Hampshire 116-6

Drag down from Shoaib Bashir and Felix Organ wallops him over deep mid-wicket for six. Takes the shine off the teenager's impressive figures.

Ben Brown has 23 and Organ 11. This 28-run stand feels significant for the visitors.

  13. Postpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Kent 171 & 93-3 v Warwickshire 549-7 dec

Watchful stuff from Harry Finch and Jack Leaning, with strike rates barely into double figures, that is until Finch produces a gorgeous drive to long on off Chris Rushworth to bring up his first boundary.

Kent edging closer to three figures, and there are some clouds on the horizon... good news for Kent followers?

  14. wicket

WICKET Vilas run out 0published at 12:29 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Lancs 76-3 v Essex 282

No-one for Dane Vilas to blame there but himself.

He pushes the ball into the covers, calls for a single but is beaten by Doug Bracewell's direct hit at the bowler's end.

Great fielding by the New Zealander and it's a double breakthrough by Essex.

  15. wicket

WICKET Pollock c Lyth b Steketee 0published at 12:28 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Yorkshire 407, Worcestershire 87-5

Ed Pollock is the next to go at New Road, for a 15-ball duck.

Worcestershire are wobbling as Yorkshire old boy Matthew Waite comes in to join Adam Hose.

It's a first wicket of the season for Aussie paceman Mark Steketee on only his second appearance.

  16. wicket

WICKET Guest lbw Karvelas 105published at 12:28 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Sussex 402 v Derbyshire 297-6

Brooke Guest's excellent innings comes to an end at Hove as Ari Karvelas has him leg-before with one which may have nipped back off the seam.

Guest batted for five hours and 21 minutes, faced 236 balls and hit a six and 14 fours.

Another setback in the next over as Haider Ali is lbw to Henry Shipley for 38 with no further addition.

    Middlesex 277 v Northants 219 & 109-2

The ground staff are hovering while the umpires converse in the middle.

We plan on for three more De Caires deliveries before drizzle turns into a shower - and we're off the field.

    Hopefully a short delay.

Big setback for Northants this morning when Emilio Gay retired hurt with a knee injury, but Procter and Whiteman have kept Northants afloat with 49 runs added without loss since then.

  19. wicket

    WICKET Jennings c Critchley b S Cook 29published at 12:25 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Lancs 76-2 v Essex 282

Breakthrough by Essex as Sam Cook - with the keeper standing up - has Keaton Jennings caught by Matt Critchley, moving to his right at third slip.

Dean Villas is in at four for Lancashire, joining Josh Bohannon.

  20. Postpublished at 12:23 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Middlesex 277 v Northants 219 & 109-2 - lead by 51

Whiteman goes back to a full, turning ball from De Caires and would've been very close to LBW without bat involved.

De Caires looks like the most likely wicket-taker here at the moment.

Dark clouds appear to be heading our way and the wind is getting up.

Tight, back of the length bowling from Helm at the other end - and the fifth ball rises sharply, but Procter nudges it away behind square for one.
