Summary

  • Eight fixtures in latest round of County Championship

  • Div One: Essex v Kent, Middlesex v Surrey, Northants v Somerset, Notts v Hants, Warwickshire v Lancs

  • Div Two: Derbys v Durham, Leics v Worcs, Yorkshire v Sussex

  1. WICKET Aldridge lbw b White 8published at 16:51 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Northants v Somerset 253-6

Kasey Aldridge is pinned in front by Jack White, and that's five-fer for the strapping Northants seamer.

An excellent effort when his fellow bowlers have toiled.

  2. Postpublished at 16:51 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex 31-0 v Kent 207

Nick Browne had two singles off his opening 36 balls on strike, then pulls Arshdeep Singh into the leg side and runs three.

The deficit is down to 176.

  3. 6 runs

Postpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Notts v Hants 153-7

Brett Hutton drops short, and James Fuller pulls aerially over the fielder on the square leg boundary.

He has 44 from 43 balls, while Felix Organ at the other end has 19.

They have counter-attacked superbly since the dismissal of Keith Barker after tea

  4. 'Guest has looked very tidy'published at 16:47 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Derbyshire 240-3 v Durham

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Brooke Guest has been very tidy today and has just notched his seventh century in first-class cricket for Derbyshire. I can't think there's been a moment of peril either.

What's more it is his second in consecutive innings, following 105 last week in a high-scoring draw with Sussex.

The hundred included 15 fours and he has made batting look very straightforward here in the Derby sunshine. It's also his second century against Durham following 116 in a draw in Chester-le-Street last season.

Guest put on 118 for the third wicket with Wayne Madsen and has so far put on 61 for the fourth with Haider Ali.

  5. Postpublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Northants v Somerset 249-5

James Rew works Luke Procter through square leg for four, and then cuts imperiously to the fence for another boundary from the very next delivery.

It's an imposing shot, that of a man in form.

    He's some player, the 19-year-old.

  6. 100 runs

for Guestpublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Derbyshire 237-3 v Durham

Back-to-back hundreds for Derbyshire wicketkeeper Brooke Guest!

After making 105 against Sussex, Guest brings up his seventh first-class century.

It's put his side in control against the Division Two leaders.

  7. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex 23-0 v Kent 207

Alastair Cook is not someone you really want to put down early.

It's a sharp chance but Grant Stewart has tempted the Essex opener into a thick edge to gully where Harry Finch can only throw is hand up above his head and block the ball before crashing down to earth... the ball landed a couple of feet behind him.

They're special when they stick, this one did not. Cook cashes in with a fifth boundary off the opening ball of Arshdeep Singh's next over to move to 25.

  8. wicket

WICKET Bartlett c McManus b White 55published at 16:41 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Northants v Somerset 233-5

A shortish delivery from Jack White, and there's something on it down the leg-side on its way through to Lewis McManus.

White asks the question, and the umpire answers in the affirmative.

George Bartlett cannot believe it, but he has to go, and Somerset are five down.

  9. 50 runs

for George Baldersonpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Warks v Lancs 197-7

George Balderson rocks back to the off-spin of Danny Briggs, and takes one to the sweeper on the cover boundary to bring up his half-century.

He's held this Lancashire innings together well. Can he kick on?

  10. 50 runs

for Jamie Smithpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Middlesex v Surrey 198-3

It's felt inevitable for a while but Jamie Smith has a fluid half-century.

He had only scored six runs combined in his previous three innings but, after turning 23 last week, Smith is back in business.

He did of course make that superb 114 in the record run-chase at Canterbury five weeks ago - this knock has plenty of similarities to that, thus far.

It's taken 90 balls and was brought up with seven fours.

  11. Postpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex 22-0 v Kent 207

Alastair Cook helps himself to three consecutive fours off Grant Stewart, perhaps bowling a little straight, and moves to 20 from 26 balls thanks largely to four boundaries in total.

Nick Browne looks a little nervy at the other end on two from 25 deliveries.

  12. Division Two latestpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

Worcestershire have just been bowled out for 178 by Leicestershire at Oakham School.

Chris Wright ended a gutsy last-wicket stand of 33 by Dillon Pennington and Adam Finch by dismissing Pennington. The Pears lost nine wickets in that afternoon session.

Derbyshire are going along really well against leaders Durham. They're 216-3 with Brooke Guest unbeaten on 94.

They're still off for rain at Headingley but there will be an inspection at 17:00 BST. Sussex are 62-5.

  13. Postpublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Middlesex v Surrey 190-3

Back under way in the evening session. The sun has disappeared and some clouds have returned, not that the hosts will mind.

Ben Foakes finds the rope off spinner Josh De Caires despite the best efforts of the sliding Pieter Malan in the deep.

Jamie Smith has 48 at the other end.

  14. Postpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex 2-0 v Kent 207

A single apiece from Nick Browne and Alastair Cook in the opening five overs.

The 207 for Kent looks below par but by how much remains to be seen... they did after all choose to bat first on it under cloud cover and with a greenish hue to the surface. Presumably they expect it to get harder to score on?

  15. Tea at Northamptonpublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Northants v Somerset 226-4

George Bartlett and James Rew see Somerset through to tea.

The visitors are well placed to score a big first-innings score against Division One's bottom side.

  16. Postpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Essex 1-0 v Kent 207

Maidens from Matt Quinn and Grant Stewart to begin the reply.

Nick Browne takes eight balls to finally get off the mark, a few ironic cheers around the County Ground - Browne made a pair at Blackpool last week. He'll have been more aware of that than anyone.

  17. wicket

WICKET Barker c Montgomery b Paterson 4published at 16:06 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Notts v Hants 88-7

Keith Barker falls immediately after the restart at Trent Bridge, squared up by an excellent delivery, and fending one to third slip.

Two in the over for Dane Paterson, one either side of the break.

  18. Tea at Edgbastonpublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Warks v Lancs 184-7

George Balderson and Tom Bailey guide Lancashire to tea.

It's not exactly a position of strength, but it's far better than it could have been after they lost Daryl Mitchell and Danny Lamb in quick succession earlier this afternoon.

Warwickshire will want to get batting quickly after tea.

  19. Tea at Lord'spublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Middlesex v Surrey 189-3

Middlesex will have been delighted to get rid of Tom Latham and Rory Burns in the afternoon session but the visitors are still ominously poised for a big total.

Burns hit 79 and Jamie Smith is showing every sign he'll also register a half-century after the resumption after making an eye-catching 47 from 75 balls so far.

Ben Foakes is with him and their first target will surely be the first batting bonus point, 61 runs away.

  20. 50 runs

for George Bartlettpublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

    Northants v Somerset 221-4

George Bartlett nudges one down to fine leg to bring up a well-made 50.

It comes up from 112 balls and has featured six fours.
