  1. 'Excited to have someone of Starc's class back'published at 10:40 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

Australia captain Pat Cummins: "We would have had a bowl as well.

"We're really happy with how Scotty [Boland] is going but unfortunately he is the one to miss out this week. Excited to have someone of Mitchell Starc's class back in.

"There are a couple of areas that we could tidy up from last week. They [Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne] are world-class players and it is rare they miss out so I've seen how hard they've been working out back."

On Australia record at Lord's: "Not a bad bit of history but not really [a factor]. It's a fresh start, new team so we'll see how we go. We love playing here.

"It might be the last time a few of the guys play here, it's the first game for some. Every Ashes test here at Lord's is special.

On 100 consecutive Tests for Nathan Lyon: "Fantastic effort, incredible. Not only in terms of form and fitness but getting picked in conditions all around the world for 100 Test matches. He's a special player and I've lucky to have him as a captain."

  2. 'The overheads have obviously played a massive part'published at 10:37 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

    StokesImage source, Getty Images

England captain Ben Stokes, speaking at the toss: "I think the overheads have obviously played a massive part in this and there's a bit of grass on the pitch so we hope it can do a bit this morning."

On the decision to select Josh Tongue ahead of Mark Wood: "It was disappointing for Woody but we wanted a like for like replacement and Tonguey can do that."

On Joe Root being only spinner: "I think Rooty's really enjoying the challenge of changing the game with the ball, he does it with the bat, he's turning into a genuine all rounder."

On the first Test defeat: "In five days, you can name numerous things we could have done differently. We could have been tidier but it was in that last hour or hour and a half, Australia were on top."

  7. Daily ZaltzQuiz answerpublished at 10:28 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

With the two captains about to make their way out to the middle for the toss, here is the answer to today's ZaltzQuiz:

    A) 21% of the overs England faced in the last two pre-Bazballian years were maidens. England have more than halved the proportion of maidens received as a batting side, and they have been even more maiden-averse since the beginning of the Pakistan series in December - 59 maidens from 891 qualifying overs (6.6%).

    B) England’s bowlers have not conceded a run from 19% of the overs they have bowled since last June. In all, since last summer’s revolution began, England’s bowlers have sent down 440 maidens, 2.6 times as many as the team have played out when batting.
