It was a day that promised so much for England after they won the toss and chose to bowl in conditions that appeared ideal for the seamers...

But, ultimately, it was a very tough day for them. Australia saw off the new ball, ground the hosts down and then piled on the runs after tea.

Two late wickets from Joe Root kept England in with a sniff but they still have a lot of work to do!

You can read Stephan Shemilt's report from day one at Lord's here.

We'll be back to see if England can fight back on day two. Join us from 08:00 BST with Test Match Special coverage beginning at 10:00 BST on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra.

Kevin Ticehurst: Apart from the late two wicket salvo from Joe Root. That felt flat, void of ideas. Anderson and Broad look totally and utterly toothless, Ollie Robinson doesn’t look himself. The only one who came out of that with any credit was Josh Tongue!

  3. Postpublished at 19:26 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

Perhaps the biggest worry for England is that Steve Smith looks to have found form again.

The Australia number four is unbeaten on 85 and has looked close to his best, starting fast before settling into his innings...

  4. 'I worry about England'published at 19:24 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

England can get back into it but I worry about it. They are going to have to be sharper in the field, I will be intrigued to see how they cope. I do think this pitch will get harder over the next few days. I worry about England. It's very tough at this stage. They switched off at Edgbaston and today, they haven't been switched on at the key moments.

  5. 'Batting can't always be perfect - you have to hang in'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

More from Labuschagne on Sky Sports...

On the high run-rate: "We didn't have many batting meetings, everyone knows their plans. Steve [Smith] obviously came out with a lot of intent and Travis [Head] has been doing this for nearly two years now, just taking the game on. Travis just takes the game on, that’s what makes him so special. He's one of my favourite players to watch."

On his batting: "It took a while, I was just telling myself to grind and get through. When you’re batting, it can’t always be perfect so you’ve just got to find a way to hang in. I didn’t get the big score I’d have liked but it was good to contribute and put us in a position that Travis could take us on."

On David Warner: "In 2019, he was probably a bit too defensive. In the last two games he is looking to attack and getting into good positions. He’s attacking the bowlers. If he plays that way, he looks like a different player."

On comparisons to Lord's in 2019: "Probably not as much pace as there was that day and the pitch is probably a bit slower. It’s the first time I have properly walked through the Long Room. The last time they were expecting Steve Smith so I barely got a clap!"

Tongue has bowled with purpose, I liked it when he changed the angle and bowled around the wicket to the left hander. He's run in and bowled with good pace all day, touched on around 90mph at times.

  7. 'How do you get Steve Smith out?'published at 19:20 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

England bowler Josh Tongue to BBC Test Match Special: "I think turning up to the game today, green top, overcast conditions, I thought we bowled really well in the first hour. We could've got four or five before lunch."

Proud of the call-up? "Two days ago when Baz told us, it was a surreal moment for myself. A very proud moment, I always wanted to be in an Ashes series."

More nerves than your debut? "A lot more nerves, a big occasion walking through the Long Room, I'll never forget it."

How important were Joe Root's wickets? "Big from Rooty getting the wickets, I felt I got more when I tried to hit the pitch."

What did you make of the protester? "I didn't see it at first, Jonny doing what he did, who knows, the game could've been called off."

Did it feel weird? "It did to be fair, it was quite a weird time for myself."

What have you all said to Jonny Bairstow? "Bit of a hero to be fair, if he didn't stop him, they could've got on the pitch and done something to the pitch."

Did Jonny Bairstow go off to change his shirt? "I think he got some powder on his shirt."

What is the plan for tomorrow? "How do you get Steve Smith out? I think the new ball is crucial, the first 30 minutes, just hitting that line and length, just try and stay patient and we'll get those wickets when we can."

  8. 'It's all too friendly from England'published at 19:19 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Playing in an Ashes isn't that enjoyable, it is after when you win. It is stressful, it's a draining process. I just get a sense it's just another game of cricket. It's not, the Ashes isn't. I don't want to see them talking to the Aussies during the game, I don't want to see it. It's all too friendly and I think England will pay for that.

It was a crazy over from Joe Root. Travis Head I think he came down well before Root let the ball go and he threw the kitchen sink at it. Head is positive and that's the way he plays. Cameron Green comes out, gets the short ball and it was the wrong shot, too early.

  10. 'Australia aren't going away'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

England know they are up against an Australian side that have never won in English conditions. They've got the bit between their teeth, they are so focused. The teams Glenn McGrath played in used to win here all the time, but a lot of real high-class cricketers have never won here. This England side better start smelling the roses because this Australia side aren't going away.

  11. 'An amazing day for us'published at 19:13 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne, speaking to Sky Sports: "Sometimes here at Lord’s it takes you time to get used to the members sitting there, it's tough to pick up when the lights are on. Obviously an amazing day for us, could’ve been three down and made it an unbelievable day.

"But still, you're going to take that when you get sent in on a wicket that we thought had a fair bit in it."

On the opening pair: "They’ve done such a good job. Batting at three, if you can get through 15-20 overs against the likes of Stuart Broad. When he gets his tail up, he goes to another level so to be able to shut that out - it certainly looked like it worked today."

I love Bazball, I love the aggression, I love the attitude, but you've got to back it up. When it's tough, you've got to play tough. If they don't play well in this Test match and lose, it's 2-0 and the series is virtually gone.

It was beautiful for bowling. They came on after the rain delay with England's fielders out after Australia's batters. They are too casual for Test cricket. I've seen enough out there that when I see Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, they're just not game ready.

Marnus Labuschagne has been speaking on Sky Sports and said it was an "amazing day" for Australia.

It's hard to disagree. We'll have more from that interview shortly.

    Glenn McGrath

Smith wants it, he wants to be out there. He seemed to be more focussed today, he seemed switched on. When he walked out, he looked up and felt today was his day. It's that intensity, I loved that pressure of Test cricket, those are the days you want to play in. The Australians seemed like they wanted it more.

Australia's day, England not sharp enough. England have got this approach to Test cricket that is quite casual, they talk the talk, the message after Edgbaston was very positive. Young players coming out with bold statements, the casual approach came out today in the middle. You get David Warner out and Steve Smith walks out and within 15 balls, he's got 25 because England bowled utter dross.

  17. England bowling figurespublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 28 June 2023

James Anderson: 0-29 from 15 overs

Stuart Broad: 0-72 from 18 overs

Ollie Robinson: 1-86 from 21 overs

Josh Tongue: 2-88 from 21 overs

Ben Stokes: 0-21 from three overs

Joe Root: 2-19 from eight overs

  18. Stumps - Aus 339-5published at 83 overs

    Smith 85, Carey 10

A maiden from Stuart Broad and that is stumps.

Australia's day after being asked to bat first under leaden skies. David Warner and Travis Head hit half-centuries and Steve Smith is still there on 85, closing in on another century.

But it looks significantly better for England than it did an hour ago. Two wickets in an over from Joe Root has give them hope. They're just one wicket away from the bowlers.

It is rare when England have bowled 80 overs where Broad or Anderson haven't got a wicket between them when bowling over a combined 20 overs. Just once since the Lord's Test eight years ago against Australia has it happened where they've failed to get a wicket between them in first 80 overs, that was against India at Trent Bridge.

    Smith 85, Carey 10

Another outside edge to end the over, Alex Carey this time but it goes to ground quickly and Ben Duckett makes a good stop at point.

Carey is able to pinch a single, though, and will be on strike to start the last over of the day.
