That's your lot after another absorbing day of Ashes cricket - and this one belonged to England.

Steve Smith went to his 32nd Test century early in the day but England soon took the five Australia wickets they need to wrap up the innings on 416.

Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley led England response and despite a wild hour in which three wickets fell to the short ball - including Duckett on 98 - the hosts closed on 278-4, trailing by 138.

You can read Stephan Shemilt's report from day two at Lord's here.

It is all set up beautifully for day three, we'll be back at 08:00 BST with Test Match Special coverage beginning at 10:00 BST on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra. Join us again tomorrow!

  2. 'England have got a long tail'published at 19:13 British Summer Time 29 June 2023

More from Steve Smith on TMS...

How have you found being back at Lord's?: "It was great seeing everyone in red for the Ruth Strauss Foundation. Not the easiest picking up the boundary with all the red, good to be out here."

How important is it to get early wickets?: "They've got a longer tail here, Broady batting at eight. A couple of wickets early hopefully and we can go from there."

When do you have to change from bowling a lot of short balls?: "You can only go short for so long, if it doesn't work you have to go back to something else. While they kept playing for them, we felt they were in the game."

  3. 'We could miss Nathan Lyon for a little while'published at 19:11 British Summer Time 29 June 2023

Australia batter Steve Smith speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "This morning, it would've been nice to score more runs but they bowled pretty well. Unfortunately the clouds went and the sun came out, we went to some short stuff and picked up a few wickets. It was a different day but it was okay."

How much of a blow was it losing Nathan Lyon? Was that when you went to go short?: "It wasn't ideal. I don't know how he's going at the moment, we're going to miss him this game and could miss him for a little while. I said to Patty why don't we go for it with the short stuff."

How have you found trying to approach their batting style?: "That's how they play their cricket, I though it worked well on this wicket. We had to revert to a different tactic."

How did you find your batting?: "Got off to a pretty good start, I was getting off nice. Good to get on the honours board."

If - and it's a big if at this stage - England are able to get up to Australia's first-innings total and this becomes a one innings shootout again, losing Nathan Lyon could really be a deciding factor.

Still no official word on his injury but it doesn't sound great.

Tom: At least next innings England only need 9 wickets. Head and Smith are miles away from Lyon. Genuinely this game and the series has taken a huge turn for England. The best bowler in the world is out.

Jonathan Cable: Would definitely had taken being 138 runs behind with only 4 wickets down at the end of today. Right back in it!

Andrew Bevan: Despite some cheap wickets given away today, any England fan would have bitten your hand off for this Day 2 close score when Aussies were 300-3!

  6. 'Potentially going to get better and better'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 29 June 2023

More from Ben Duckett on TMS...

Frustrated with how he got out?: "I wouldn't say so, I tried to hit that ball on the floor. It's a shot I played, I was playing it for five or six overs before and felt okay."

What did you think of the change of approach late on?: "Brooky's 45? Stokesy, that's how he generally starts an innings, everyone has their own plans. He's a calm captain, he's played beautifully, hopefully, he can kick on tomorrow."

On the pitch, Nathan Lyon's injury and the game: "That pitch is potentially going to get better and better, you never want to see anyone go down, but if we can get close to them and get past them, we were blessed with conditions today."

Seems to be differing schools of thought after day two but I'm definitely in the camp of it being a good day for England - albeit with a blip for an hour or so.

From being written off by some yesterday, they have come back, taken five Australia wickets quickly and proceeded to bat themselves into a position where they can back themselves to go for a first-innings lead.

    Game on, I reckon!

Can we quit with the negativity! If we’d been offered bowling out the Aussies 5-70 and then closing on 278-4 at the start of play after such a poor day yesterday you’d very much have taken it. England have roared back into this game, some commentators making it sound like we’re dead and buried!

    Joseph in Durham

It’s not stupid cricket. You play aggressively there will be on occasion be silly mistakes, but this is as engaging as cricket has ever been in my opinion. FROM BALL 1.

    Ollie

It's no wonder England have underperformed for years. There's such a culture of negativity. We cheer them on when they're scoring smoothly and quickly, but then we mock them for taking risks. It's pretty much impossible to have one without the other. Sometimes it'll go right, sometimes it'll go wrong. Better to try something and fail than to try little and still fail, as has tended to be England's way.

  9. 'We're certainly not going to change'published at 18:56 British Summer Time 29 June 2023

England opener Ben Duckett to BBC Test Match Special: "I made that quite a slow walk off, it's never nice falling short, an Ashes Test at Lord's, I strive to make runs. I would've taken that at the start of the day, gutted I'm not still there overnight."

Regrets playing that shot?: "That shot got me plenty of runs in my career, that's how it got me out, not at all. If I'd gone away from my natural game, I'd be more frustrated."

Was it a mistake playing that way?: "Only the same way as three slips and you shouldn't be driving, that's how I got 98. Certainly not disappointed with the shot."

Frustrated at seeing three of you go similarly in quick succession?: "I'm not sure how to answer that, I'm surprised about the question. We've played positive cricket for 12 months and we're certainly not going to change. If we get close or a lead, we're certainly in this game."

piemontemio: Classic case of mixed feelings - after yesterday, I'd have taken Australia 416 all out and us 278/4; after 188/1 with Lyon limping off, I'm disappointed...Always exciting with this England team!

Stuart Mitchell: England's day (much needed) with the exception of that brainless hour and three gifted wickets.

Mike McMahon: Great day for England that. Batted and bowled themselves right back into this today. Minus a crazy 45 minutes that’s comfortably England’s day. Would have snapped your hand off for this at stumps yesterday!

Lyon limps off with apparent calf injury

We're hearing that Steve Smith has just said in his news conference that Nathan Lyon is unlikely to play in the rest of this match and possibly even the rest of the series.

We'll wait for more information on that but it would be a huge blow for Australia.

  12. 'Probably my best knock so far'published at 18:44 British Summer Time 29 June 2023

England opener Ben Duckett, speaking on Sky Sports: "I'm gutted but I'd have taken that at the start of the day. I'm gutted as well as happy.

"It felt like it was probably my best knock so far. I'm just gutted Marnus hit the stumps the over before [when it could have gone for overthrows] - it was just meant to be after that I think.

"It's a shame, I was just backing the way I was playing and I felt comfortable on the short ball, just ticking over and scoring off most deliveries. That one rushed me a bit and unfortunately it went straight to Warner."

Thankfully, the England captain decided to leave that test for another day.

After such a wild hour of cricket, Ben Stokes came in and provided the calm to get England through to stumps...

It's England's day, the way they came back. They did get the early breakthrough, England batted beautifully until Nathan Lyon got that injury. There was a mad hour and England bought it on themselves. They decided to attack with fire, Ollie Pope caught at the boundary, Ben Duckett close to an Ashes century at Lord's the great Joe Root falling. Thank goodness for Ben Stokes calming it all down.

    Stokes 17, Brook 45

After a single from Harry Brook to long on, Ben Stokes calmly sees out the rest of the over from Steve Smith.

That's stumps after an enthralling day at Lord's. It belongs to England, they've fought their way back into contention but it could have been so much better.

Australia were arguably gifted all four wickets, three of them as England insisted upon taking on the short ball.

Ultimately, though, Stokes' side trail by 138 runs with six wickets remaining and a first-innings lead is still very much possible.
