  1. 'Root revives England but Smith looks dominant'published at 08:50 British Summer Time 29 June 2023

Time to have a look at the back pages. They don't make particularly pleasant reading if you're associated with England.

The back page of the Times focusses on the performance of Australia batter Steve Smith, who will resume 85 not out, but adds that the two late wickets Joe Root picked up has given England a sniff.

  3. A delayed start a possibilitypublished at 08:41 British Summer Time 29 June 2023

Before we take a look at the back pages, a weather update from Lord's.

The covers are on this morning and there has been rain. It has almost stopped according to those at the ground and is expected to have cleared by 10:00 BST.

There is a chance it may linger around closer to 11:00 and we may get a delayed start.

You can find out more in this very helpful video from the BBC weather team, external and keep up to date with the forecast.

  4. England's demeanour 'absolutely shambolic' - Pietersenpublished at 08:36 British Summer Time 29 June 2023

Michael Vaughan wasn't the only former player to have a pop at England during day one though.

Former batter Kevin Pietersen, who is working as a pundit for Sky Sports, was less than impressed by England's urgency to get back on the field after a rain day.

With grey skies over Lord's the Australia openers were back on the field before England, with Ben Stokes still pictured on the England balcony.

Pietersen described the situation as "absolutely shambolic".

"It is one thing swanning around saying 'this is a wonderful team to play in', 'we are creating the best environment'," Pietersen told Sky Sports.

"The England bowlers should have been on the stairs saying 'we want to bowl at Australia'. It is all too easy and nice."

Michael Vaughan also said: "If you are going to talk the talk, you have to walk the walk."

  6. England 'too casual' for Ashes cricket - Vaughanpublished at 08:28 British Summer Time 29 June 2023

    BBC Sport at Lord's

England were "too casual" on day one of the second Ashes Test and must realise the contest "is not just another game", says former captain Michael Vaughan.

Amid a lacklustre England display, Australia reached 339-5 at the close having been put in to bat at Lord's.

The hosts dropped two catches, bowled 12 no-balls and lacked consistency with the ball and now have an uphill task as they bid to level the series.

"I worry about England," Vaughan said. "I see too much casualness."

He added: "They switched off last week at Edgbaston and today when it has really mattered, England haven't been switched on quick enough and hard enough to win the moment.

    "It has cost them."

Today's Guess Your Way To Glory question:

Wednesday was the 105th time that England have won the toss and chosen to bowl first.

If Australia score 11 more runs, it will be the 37th time out of those 105 innings in which England have conceded at least 350 runs.

In how many of the previous 36 occasions have England gone on to win the match?

  12. Ominous Smith gives Australia edgepublished at 08:02 British Summer Time 29 June 2023

A lacklustre display from England and an ominous unbeaten 85 from Steve Smith gave Australia much the better of the first day of the second Ashes Test at Lord's.

After England won what appeared to be a crucial toss in dank conditions, their bowling lacked penetration and fielding again included costly errors.

And Smith, looking determined after missing out in both innings of Australia's victory in the first Test, capitalised to move the tourists to 339-5.

David Warner made 66 before Smith added 102 with Marnus Labuschagne and 118 with Travis Head, who swatted 77 from 73 balls.

Josh Tongue, on his Ashes debut, was the pick of the England attack, bowling each of Warner and Usman Khawaja with lethal movement down the Lord's slope.

Joe Root at least removed Head and Cameron Green in the same over late in the day, but Smith's continued presence is a huge danger to the home side.

And by the end, England were left needing a swift turnaround on day two to get back into this Test and the series.

    Morning!

After winning the toss at Lord's, England spent most of day one chasing leather, bowling no-balls and generally being quite sloppy in the field.

It has left them with their backs against the wall at the Home of Cricket.

Can they turn it around on day two and fight back in this Ashes series? They certainly need to.

    Will they? Let's find out.
