Credit to the Australian bowlers, they are taking on the egos of the England batters here.

This is madness. I just cannot believe it.
Root c Smith c Starc 10 (Eng 222-4)
Brainless stuff from England. The catch is confirmed and the home side are just letting Australia back into the game.
Joe Root was on the pull, top-edged and Steve Smith was able to come in form his position halfway back to take the catch.
It was close but the replays confirm that he just got his fingers underneath the ball.
England are doing their best to throw away a very good position in this firs innings.
Smith's catch removes Root for 10

It looks out to me.
What are England doing!?
Joe Root had one life but he's fallen into the short ball trap again!
But has Steve Smith got his hand under the ball? It's being checked but it doesn't look good for Root.

Joe Root is trying to get inside the line of the ball so there is no risk. Harry Brook looks as though he wants to hit boundaries.
We know he is an aggressive player but in trying to hit it up there is more of an element of risk.
Proof that not every ball in the last 40 minutes has been a bouncer.
Josh Hazlewood did go very full to Harry Brook first up. He was hit for four... and it's been short stuff ever since.

Lyon limps off with apparent calf injury
We've have news, of sorts, about Nathan Lyon.
Australia say he has a right calf injury and will be assessed after play.
Root 10, Brook 10
Joe Root does allow one short ball to go through to Alex Carey in the Josh Hazlewood over.
Just the one, mind. England still seem to be determined to take on the bouncers.
Four from the over, all in singles, but the whole of Lord's seems to be on edge!

This is the most bizarre hour of cricket I have ever seen in the Ashes.
Field is set for more short stuff as Josh Hazlewood prepares to continue after drinks.
Hold on tight, folks, here we go again...
Joe Root has just surpassed Allan Border to move into the top 10 Test run-scorers of all time...
Here's the moment Ben Duckett will be replaying over and over in his head.
On 98, he top-edged a pull shot off Josh Hazlewood and was caught at fine leg.
No century but a superb knock from the England opener...

When Root was caught behind, I threw my headphones down in frustration and stormed off to make a cup of tea. Rather surprised to find he's still batting!

There is a nervous hum around Lord's at the moment. I'm not sure about the England batters but the crowd seem unnerved by the events of the past half hour or so.
Harry Brook gets a single with another edge as he takes on another short ball from Mitchell Starc. Another that looked like it could have gone anywhere.
A more controlled pull from Joe Root adds another single - and it's time for drinks.
I think everyone needs a breather!

The last six times England openers have reached 90 in an Ashes Test, only two of them have gone on to make 100.
Thanks, Tom.
Well, it's been a very interesting passage of play. You can't keep your eyes off it but I wouldn't say I've enjoyed it...
We've got another hour and a quarter of play left in the day and I have no idea what to expect!
After all that I think I need a lie down in a dark room.
Here to take you through to the close is Sam Drury.

Everyone saying that Joe Root should play his "normal" game should look at his average during the Bazball era. Joe has been untethered by Stokes - now is not the time to try and put the leash back on!
