    Eng 291-5

Harry Brook is fine to continue and first ball after the resumption, he controls a pull shot to deep backward square for a single to take him to a fourth Test half-century!

It comes up from 63 deliveries after a bit of a struggle so far this morning.

Not too dissimilar than the last series here, Steve Smith copping one from Jofra Archer. A nasty blow.

    Eng 290-5published at 66.2 overs

We've got a delay as Harry Brook is hit on the helmet by a Pat Cummins bouncer!

That looked a nasty one and the physio is out to check on Brook.

He looks to be OK but England will go through the concussion protocols.

Nathan Lyon has been diagnosed with a significant calf strain. He will required a period of rehabilitation after this match. A decision regarding his availability for the rest of the series will be made after this game.

The news on Nathan Lyon is now official...

  6. Eng 289-5published at 66 overs

There is a cry of "oh no!" next to me as Jonny Bairstow takes on another Mitchell Starc short ball.

He tried to play it down but the extra bounce meant it came off the top edge and hung in the air for quite some time... but lands safely this time.

  7. Eng 287-5published at 65.3 overs

Wow! That really did rear up from Mitchell Starc. The ball raps Harry Brook on the gloves but goes straight to ground.

The next one is banged in short again and moves away from the right-hander considerably. Not what England want to see at this stage...

Yesterday’s short ball madness was poorly executed by England but I still feel a good bit of BazBall is needed this morning to try and get to parity (or as close as possible) and get Australia in today under these conditions. Batting should be better tomorrow for a memorable winning run chase!

Just one run from Pat Cummins' over and it comes when he overdoes a bouncer to Jonny Bairstow.

The ball sails over the Yorkshireman's head and is called wide.

Lord's is very quiet at the moment, there's not even much of a hum.

Not all good news for Australia then. Nathan Lyon will be a big miss and it sounds like he could miss a significant chunk of the remainder of the series.

Australian journalist Peter Lalor with an "official" update on Nathan Lyon: "Nathan has been diagnosed with a significant calf strain. He will require a period of rehabilitation after this match is concluded. A decision regarding his availability for the remainder of the series will be made at the conclusion of the game."

Not the start England wanted. The captain departed second ball of the day...

  13. Eng 286-5published at 64 overs

After Harry Brook pinches a single into the off side, Jonny Bairstow middles a drive but can't beat the extra cover fielder.

He gets a single to fine leg, leaving Brook one ball to face.

Inevitably, it's a bouncer but more surprisingly, it's one that the England man gets up on his tiptoes to defend.

Dan Miles: Whisper it but Stokes is dreadfully out of form with the bat. Only three 100s since 2019 and one in the last 18 months. He doesn't look confident.

  15. Eng 284-5published at 63 overs

Jonny Bairstow gets through the remainder of Pat Cummins over without concern.

England are in a precarious position now, still trailing by 132. They need a partnership between Bairstow and Harry Brook.

Inflammable: Steve Waugh cut out the hook because it got him out. You can't score runs when you're out playing brainless shots...

That's one option but the hook shot can be quite useful, too. I seem to remember Jonny Bairstow repeatedly hooking the ball into the stands at Trent Bridge last summer.

Basically, hook shot when it works = good, hook shot when you get out = bad....

Pat Cummins starts from the other end and the bouncer ploy continues.

No sign yet that Harry Brook is going to back down, he pulls the second delivery of the over to deep backward square for a single.

Interestingly, there is a more conventional field now Jonny Bairstow is on strike.

  19. Eng 283-5published at 62 overs

    Brook 45, Bairstow 4

A wicket second ball of the day and it was a very good delivery from Mitchell Starc, and an even better catch by Cameron Green.

Jonny Bairstow is in at seven for England, the last recognised batter, and he gets off the mark with a lovely drive through extra cover for four.

Cameron Green, how good is he in the gully region? I don't think any other player in this match would've caught that.
