  3. 'We have the courage to see how far we can take it'published at 18:26 British Summer Time 30 June 2023

More from England spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel on TMS...

The spirit of this team?: "The guys have just come off there, they've bowled every day so far and they're excited to bowl tomorrow.

"Josh Tongue has bowled so well in this match, so has Stuart Broad, so has Jimmy Anderson, Ollie Robinson is waiting for that first one then he will be away. If we bowl them out, over two days, we think we can chase them."

Is the plan just to keep continuing with the attacking approach?: "We've seen in the last year this is how this team operates, gets boundaries and break records. We have the courage to see how far we can take it.

"We have some of the most skilled players in that dressing room, we have two very skilled teams here and our players want to show their skills. We're trying to put them on the back foot, some parts it has worked, in some parts it hasn't."

Is it approach over result?: "It is until after day five."

  4. 'No-one said it was reckless v New Zealand'published at 18:22 British Summer Time 30 June 2023

England spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel to BBC Test Match Special: "We had an amazing day yesterday, it's tossed and turned.

"Day one, we bowled well and didn't get our rewards. We were always going to take the positive option. This evening, you've seen a masterclass in bowling. Did we get the fortune? No,"

What is your response to the criticism of your approach?: "People will have their opinions. We have our idea, part of that was taking the option today.

"I'm not going to get into this argument, no-one said it was reckless versus New Zealand, no-one said it was reckless when Joe Root played that reverse scoop. We tried to get them off that length and score."

  5. 'A positive position to be in'published at 18:20 British Summer Time 30 June 2023

More from Australia bowler Mitchell Starc, speaking to the BBC's Today at the Test...

On what target Australia might set England: "That's for higher pay grades than me! Pat [Cummins] and Andrew [McDonald] to decide that. Then the brains trust will see how the next two days pan out, particularly the first couple of sessions tomorrow.

"I'm not sure if there is any more weather around the next couple of days but first thing's first, build that lead. Fortunately we've got someone like Travis Head who can play a role for us [as a spinner].

"If we can do the bulk of the work with seamers and then Trav can fill in when he needs to."

On batting conditions: "It's been a slowish wicket but they've got a quality bowling attack, they have done for a long time, and we knew there were going to be periods where it was uncomfortable for batters. They put that pressure on us but our top order have been fantastic.

"It's not just been one or two guys. Steve [Smith] was fantastic in the first innings, Usman [Khawaja] and the way he's gone about it has been fantastic, Trav is waiting in the wings.

"We've got guys who have soaked up the pressure and helped build this lead."

Australia have missed six wicket chances in this series, from those, players reprieved have added just 83 runs, just under 17 on average.

Australia have added 39 runs per each chance England have missed.

  7. 'It's silly, it's stupid, it won't have constant success'published at 18:16 British Summer Time 30 June 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I thought Brook played the short ball well, but the problem is he is always trying to hit the boundary. When he was still and hit the pull shot, he hit one or two quite nicely.

I don't think he's got a real problem with the short ball, he's got a problem with his mindset and the boundaries. If he can change his mindset and think, 'just take the singles'.

When quick bowling is on, it's nice to be at the non-striker's end. When you've got that field Australia set, if you go at two or three and over and stay in, that is better. I am intrigued, not just with Harry, but with all of the batters trying to constantly take it on.

It's silly, it's stupid, and it won't have constant success.

I suppose the issue for Harry Brook has only arrived in the last 24 hours, he's probably not really faced it yet. We haven't had this discussion.

When he has played, he looked to take it on and hit baseball shots. Everyone combatted that by putting everyone on the fence. He looked to take it on but he has to decide which shots he is going to play.

You have to have the right option and keep it as simple as that for the next innings. You have to clarify it and play it well.

  9. 'Brook is going to cop more short stuff'published at 18:08 British Summer Time 30 June 2023

    Glenn McGrath
Ex-Australia bowler on BBC Test Match Special

The second ball of the day set the tone, that was a vital early wicket. Good bowling by Mitchell Starc, it just extracted a bit more out of the pitch.

I don't think Mitchell Starc likes bowling short, sometimes it finishes your action. Getting that wicket and then seeing how Harry Brook played, they would have seen he wouldn't like it.

He's going to cop a fair bit more, if you look unsettled and don't like the short ball, you'll get it more.

  10. 'It was kamikaze'published at 18:07 British Summer Time 30 June 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Really good teams know when to switch it on. The pace of Starc, it was intimidation of the highest order.

It was kamikaze with the bat in hand, I love watching Harry Brook bat but he doesn't have to take the high, high-risk option. I hope he doesn't think the only way he can play Test cricket is to hit boundaries all of the time.

If they played sensibly, they could have knocked it around. Travis Head picks up a couple. Now Brook has been bounced out, he's going to get a lot more of that and is he going to play that?

  11. 'A positive position to be in'published at 18:05 British Summer Time 30 June 2023

Australia bowler Mitchell Starc, speaking to the BBC's Today at the Test: "It's a shame it finished early today but it was a really positive morning for us to bowl them out and have a bit of a lead.

"Our top order capitalised on that early, there was some good bowling, pressure built but our guys got through that. Building on that lead is a positive position to be in."

On wickets coming quickly: "There was always a hope that they would. Obviously, they've got a bit of a longer tail with Moeen [Ali] not playing.

"We knew if we could take a couple early and get some inroads into their tail, things could go the way they did. We were fortunate it did go that way. If we hadn't, there was the chance of a big partnership so a positive morning for us."

On Nathan Lyon's injury: "I'm not sure what the medical message is, he's not looking in too much comfort at the minute which is a shame.

"He's been quite robust getting in the team for us, obviously 100 Tests in a row, so he hasn't had to go through those long lay-offs throughout his career.

"Hopefully, it's not a long one. Whether he's back in the series, I don't know. He's on crutches at the minute. Disappointing for him and for us, he's a quality performer."

From the moment that second ball of the day left Mitchell Starc's hand, England have been under the cosh. They have been helped by some sloppy batting from England. England bowled well.

I will be interested to see what positive spin England put on this because they speak very positively. I thought they bowled very well. A bit of sharpness needed, Jimmy Anderson's chance to Khawaja, it's all the batting and the Bazball style.

  14. Postpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 30 June 2023

It was a tough day for England - to say the least! - but the last significant moment of it did go their way as Jimmy Anderson got Marnus Labuschagne with beauty.

Well, it was actually a wide long hop that was slapped to backward point but they all count...

I dislike this England cricket team now. In the 90s, we weren't as good as the Aussies, but this team is as good as this Aussie team, but they are playing reckless and irresponsible cricket. It's infuriating.

Blimey, I never thought I'd find an England cricket fan who yearns for the 90s!

What has happened here and at Edgbaston is England not having the killer instinct to nail Australia down or to say this is opportunity, we don't need to hit sixes, we just need to hammer teams down. They took scoring runs for granted in the first innings.
