Mrs Griff: People criticising the negative reactions to Baz Ball. THIS is why. What's the point in being entertaining if you're getting battered? It's the delusion Leeds fans had when Bielsa was the manager.
Marcelo Bielsa taking strays...
I don't think anyone would say this has been good from England. The counter-argument is that they played 'traditional' Test cricket prior to this and won one Test in 17 matches...
A few cheers and applause around Lord's as Jonny Bairstow slaps the ball out to deep point for a single.
That brings up the 300 for the home side.
Josh Hazlewood is on to replace Pat Cummins. Relatively conventional field set for Jonny Bairstow.
Still a man out catching on the hook, though.

Mitchell Starc has bowled beautifully, he's just managed to get that extra bounce. That's what really good teams can do when it matters and make sure they get the job done.
Extras are keeping England ticking over for the moment.
There is a wide and a no-ball in the Mitchell Starc set as he peppers Stuart Broad with short stuff.
The England man is hanging in there for now but it does not look fun out there!

Please explain how throwing away two matches and potentially the series with this childish batting is entertaining. Winning matches is entertaining, winning the Ashes is entertaining! Duckett summed it up for me perfectly yesterday. He said if they didn’t attack the short ball, Australia would have won the battle. It’s not the battle that counts, it’s the war that you want to win!
Chris, London
I’ve enjoyed Bazball as much as the next person but enough, this obsessive, aggressive, kamikaze batting has to be toned down. So disappointing to see England throwing it away.
John
You can license players to play their natural game but you can't teach common sense. Waiting this out would exhaust the Aussies before the new ball. Instead we've done exactly what they want. They need to have a word with themselves.

The traditional way of playing Test cricket is for Stuart Broad to just hang in there and let Jonny Bairstow play his shots. But this is England and the new England don't play very traditionally.

Both Jonny Bairstow and Stuart Broad try to ride the short balls from Pat Cummins in this over and England get three from it.
One of them is a bye that looked very harsh on Alex Carey. The ball bounced well over Broad, too high for the wicketkeeper to get anywhere near it but wasn't called wide...
Bairstow tries to pinch a single last ball but the fielder is in quickly from point to stop it.
Pretty much all short stuff from Mitchell Starc so far this morning - and it has worked.

Stuart Broad coming out, it is not easy facing 90mph rockets from Mitchell Starc. Playing expansively and aggressively in the right way, that's fantastic. Seeing Harry Brook play a shot like that, that's not good enough. Starc probably only has one or two overs more, just ride it, just see it out. Pat Cummins can't believe his luck.
Stuart Broad comes in and gets off the mark with a single. England need a few runs from him but Jonny Bairstow will have to lead the way.
He pulls away and points at Marnus Labuschagne at short leg. Looks like the Australian was still chatting away as Mitchell Starc ran in to bowl.
When Starc does bowl the last delivery, Bairstow ducks under another bouncer.

Sam Wise: Mindless batting only lads, mindless batting only
Adam Savoury: Absolutely pathetic cricket.

Shocking shot. England clearly like losing. Yesterday they gifted Australia three wickets. They arrive on day three, the pitch is doing a bit more. To see that wicket and Australia now know they are bowling to the tail.
Brook c Cummins b Starc 50 (Eng 293-6)
The short ball does the trick for Australia again!
Harry Brook had been struggling against the short stuff this morning, he tried to go back on the attack but it's a poor shot.
He backed away trying to hit over the off side but looped it straight to Pat Cummins, halfway back at cover.
Australia are well on top again.

The clouds have arrived and already, we've seen more balls bounce. Yesterday there certainly wasn't any extravagant bounce.

Australia are bowling fast, aggressive, hostile, the right areas if they are going to bowl short. The throat area. They are getting quicker and pacier this morning.
Huge appeal for caught behind from Pat Cummins as Harry Brook tries to take on another short ball.
Cummins is attacking him from around the wicket and he seems convinced. The rest of the Australia fielders and keeper Alex Carey aren't interested so the bowler has to turn heel and got back to his mark.
There is definitely some added pace and bounce in the surface so far this morning and the tourists have the bowlers to make the most of it.

That's Harry Brook's eighth 50-plus score in nine Tests, four of which have been converted into centuries.
