I entirely agree with Jonathan Agnew's comments. England would most certainly have won the first Test if they had been more cautious in the middle batting order instead of throwing the bat at the ball, the strategy should have been to wear the bowlers out by defensive play until the endgame looked more in their favour. The sad thing is that they are throwing the second Test away too by not changing strategy. The fans not only want to see an exciting game but they also want their side to win.

People are missing the point about Bazball. It is not the style of play that has let us down but the application of it. These are very different things.

    Tristan. On holiday in Dorset.

The aggressive approach is fine. Just put some common sense into it. Both matches England have given nearly all their wickets away.

    Brian Sparrow

Both good points. Everyone loves the aggressive approach, but is it nuanced enough to be able to go up and down the gears? Ben Stokes showed that was possible late on day two.

The crowd is building at Lord's with around 75 minutes to go until start of play.

There's plenty of white cloud up ahead but it is dry, with the wicket uncovered and several ground staff working hard to get the square ready.

Every session has felt important this series but if England do not have a good morning, you fear the match may be taken away from them.

  13. Why England's lack of left-handed batters leaves a 'huge gap'published at 09:22 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

    Callum Matthews
    BBC Sport cricket writer

England will go into the T20 series against Australia in the Women's Ashes with no left-handed batters in their 16-player squad.

It is a continuing trend, with a lack of options available to head coach Jon Lewis and captain Heather Knight.

It leaves a "huge gap" in England's skillset says Lewis, with a combination of left and right-handers often picked so bowlers are unable to get into a rhythm and batters can capitalise on any short boundaries.

BBC Sport have worked with data analysts CricViz to crunch the numbers and work out if the issue is isolated to England.

  14. Knight gives ICEC report insight amid 'ironing' remarkpublished at 09:19 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

England captain Heather Knight says cricket has made progress but has "a long way to go" after a damning independent report released this week.

The report found "widespread" discrimination in English and Welsh cricket.

Knight said: "I started out playing men's club cricket and being asked: 'Do you do the ironing for the men when you're finished?'

"Now I lead my team-mates out in front of a near-full house with 85,000 tickets sold for the whole series.

"Cricket has come far, but still has a long way to go."

  15. Ashes T20 series beginspublished at 09:15 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Today is a double Ashes day as England women take on Australia in the first of three T20s at Edgbaston, a match you can see live on BBC Two from 18:35 BST.

Australia lead the multi-format Ashes 4-0 on points after they wrapped up an 89-run victory over England in the Test match segment of the series on Monday.

To regain the Ashes from Australia, England must win five of the remaining six games - three one-day internationals follow the three T20s, all worth two points each.

Nat Sciver-Brunt will be fit enough to play in the first T20 as a batter but a decision will be made on her ability to bowl in the match.

Seamer Kate Cross is also available for selection after dislocating her thumb during the Test match.

  20. 'Careless, with a touch of arrogance'published at 09:02 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Gideon Haigh in the Australian, external was equally scathing of England's approach:

"If ever a Test match occasion cried out for a speck of a smidgen of a soupcon of restraint, this was it. One wicketless hour, and Nathan Lyon might have been warming up in a moon boot. But after Mitchell Starc removed Ben Stokes with a swift delivery into the armpit, the rest followed, not so much bullishly as naively.

"Harry Brook has probably guaranteed he will not get another ball in his half this summer; Jonny Bairstow exhibited all the patience of a boiling kettle; and Ollie Robinson, he of the ‘three numbers XIs’, batted like one of four, running down the wicket to Green then to Head.

"Stuart Broad perished in the same over, and instead of Australia’s bowlers being denied respite it was England’s, including its forty-year-old figurehead, back on duty less than twenty-four hours after a 100-over first innings.

"Did it ‘feel’ to England like they had a first innings lead, as it felt to them like they won at Birmingham? It should not have: this cricket was careless not carefree, with a touch of arrogance too."
