Starc catch overruled - but was umpire right?

We've reached the end of yet another fabulous, if slightly surreal, day of Ashes cricket.

It ends with England 114-4, needing another 257 runs to win and level the series at 1-1.

Australia need six more wickets for a 2-0 lead but they'll believe it should only be five after that controversial catch/ non-catch from Mitchell Starc late.

You can read Stephan Shemilt's report from day four at Lord's here.

Test Match Special coverage starts at 10:00 BST tomorrow on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, we'll be back a couple of hours earlier from 08:00 BST.

There is a fascinating final day in store so join us then!

The action may have finished at Lord's - even as the debate still rages - but there is still Ashes action for you to enjoy tonight.

The first T20 in the multi-format women's series is taking place at Edgbaston right now with England trying to post a competitive total after losing three quick wickets.

Arthur Sharpe: Clearly Starc put his hands out as he was worried about sliding into the rope. Nothing wrong with that in essence, so long as you don't drag the ball along the floor, which he did.

Tom: The ball can't touch the floor. It's simple. As he's sliding the ball touches the floor. You're movement isn't finished once you've caught it. The movement is finished when you're stood up with ball in hand. The slide he was still in motion.

Adrian: I've seen players catch the ball and drop it, throw it, spike it instantly quicker than it took Starc to fall to the ground. There is no consistency over this rule. Players have thrown the ball in the air in celebration mid tumble.

Today may also be the last we will see of Nathan Lyon in this series - possibly the last we ever see of him in an Ashes series in England.

If it was, it was a memorable finale! The off-spinner has been on crutches the last two days after injuring his calf but limped out at bat at number 11 and thumped a boundary before he was eventually dismissed.

It was the culmination of a bizarre passage of play!

  8. 'Different decisions have been given'published at 19:38 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

More from Marcus Trescothick speaking to TMS...

How is the mood?: "We're still fairly upbeat, we're in a positive unit. We have good days and bad days, you enjoy it on a good day, but you don't get too down on a bad day. You take the rough with the smooth."

What is the right way to play it?: "Who knows? They never really got going, they didn't get scoring momentum, they probably wanted 400/450, with a lot more time to go."

Are you happy with how quick you got the wickets today?: "You could see it was challenging, hard work, we managed to pick up wickets, restricted the runs, pretty happy with that."

Was the catch from Mitchell Starc rightly ruled out?: "I have no idea on the rules, we've seen different ones in this game and different decisions have been given."

Did you need that luck?: "We needed a little bit of luck, hopefully it's a sign things are changing."

Will it end 2-0 or 1-1?: "We'll see, it makes it an exciting day. Whatever happens tomorrow, it's going to be an exciting final day."

If Starc tries to roll his arm and hand to stop the ball from hitting the grass, does it pop out!? We’ll never know. Not out in my opinion.

    Martin, Sydney

Glenn McGrath as a panto villain? It's a fair catch! Oh no it isn't Glenn!

    Che in Leeds

Is the law not overly complicated? Surely if the ball touches the ground it's not out. Simple.

  10. 'I think there's always hope'published at 19:33 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

England batting coach Marcus Trescothick to BBC's Test Match Special: "Finely balanced. We've got a big job to do. We didn't want to lose the wickets at the top order but we faced some beautiful balls, it's not out of the question yet."

Do you feel you have a chance?: "I think there's always hope with Ben there, two Bens there, Jonny coming in and the bowlers. If someone can get a big score, we can challenge them and try and overcome it."

A challenging wicket?: "The guys are talking about it being two-paced, you can see it coming off at different speeds, different lengths, how do you score when it's bowled short? It's a challenge ahead."

Pull shot the right move?: "I think it's a very individual thing, we will see a variation of different techniques over a couple of days. Australia really slowed down, didn't score and lost wickets. You hope we will get more used to it and their bowlers will get more tired."

The bowling restricted the scoring and got plenty of wickets. Whether the pitch is just two-paced and they're not getting enough credit. England with the new ball, it looks quite nice to face.

If you look at Alex Carey, they would've loved to face the new ball. Australia bowled some cracking deliveries Australia could not do much about.

I've never bowled seam in my life, I don't know how the seamers are going to wake up every morning bowling like that. That tactic is good for periods but, ultimately, England require 257.

It's just a reminder to me that Pope, Crawley, Brook, that pitch is the best time to bat. The first innings, Crawley was dominating and he ran past one, he then gets one down the side. Pope plays baseball, gets a beauty.

Brook played well then that poor shot, then he gets a jaffa. You don't get that against lesser teams. I hope those three players in particularly are looking back, someone like Marcus Trescothick is saying put all of them in the bank.

It's worth remembering that quite a lot happened on day four - it wasn't just that catch/ non-catch at the end!

Not least, we had one of the strangest sessions of Test cricket I've seen as England bowled 98% short balls to Australia, whose batters looked to ignore it before losing patience and giving England catching practice.

If you're Australian it's a good catch, if English it's not according to the rules. No use arguing the decision has been made. Aussies worried perhaps?

    Wes, Manchester

It's been a good partnership between Duckett and Stokes but surely it's a bit early for the Australians to be worried, Wes?

I don't think he had control of his body, he did scrape the ball. Starc should have been sharper. He will turn his hand next time.

Did the ground assist him catching the ball? Did him sliding aiding the catch? It did not assist him, he had control of the ball. Every catch in this series, we'll have to make sure they are in control of their body.

Dave: If Starc was in full control of the ball and his body he wouldn't have dragged it along the ground. Simple as that really. Not out.

Jon Evans: You can't say Starc was in control of his movement as until he stops sliding the ball could bump out his hand (as has been seen before) and the ball's clearly on the ground. Love for those complaining (i.e. McGrath) explain how that is a catch according to the laws.

Not out, it's an obvious thing. I always thought the ball can't touch the ground and it touches the ground.

He caught that catch in his hands while still moving and he quite obviously scraped the floor. I wasn't totally sure of the rules, but it should be simple, if the ball touches the ground, it shouldn't be out.
