Five from the Josh Tongue over, all in byes as the short-ball ploy continues and Jonny Bairstow makes a couple of errors.
After a fumble early in the over, he completely misses one a couple of balls later. The ball did swing after going past the batter but it wasn't great from Bairstow.

In this series so far, Jimmy Anderson has bowled 75 overs and taken 3-219, prior to that, in 10 Tests he had taken 45 wickets, averaging 17.6. He has averaged under 19 in all four series previous to this one in the Stokes/McCullum era. It's been tough so far for him.

This is entertaining for me watching a team playing this way. What England did was not.
England themselves showed why teams do resort to the short-ball ploy.
That was an extreme example but even the composed Usman Khawaja shows he is fallible with a play and a miss on the hook.
After delay while Steve Smith - who is at the non-striker's end - complains about SpiderCam and gets it moved, Ollie Robinson's well-directed bumper makes Khawaja reconsider having shaped up to pull.

@Andrew Ware 11:29, that looks like a boy band album cover photo. What would a cricket boy band be called? Byezone?
Will, Cambridge
Come on then, folks, can you do any better than Byezone?

England need wickets in the Test match and at the moment, Josh Tongue has got his wickets by pitching it up. This intrigues me because England have just got think of getting wickets. Pitched up deliveries are the way to go at this stage.
Lead by 251
Australia's lead has gone past 250 as Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith decide the time is right to play at some of these Josh Tongue bouncers.
Neither batter is trying to hit the cover off it but are content to knock the ball on its head for singles.
After Steve Smith thumped three boundaries in an over, you can see why England might want to join the dots for a bit...

Given this is 15mph slower, it’s not quite Jofra Archer v Steve Smith here four years ago from Ollie Robinson.

The short ball from the England perspective, I think they are using to get dot balls. I don't think any of this Australia partnership will be thinking baseball at the minute.
Lead by 247
Ollie Robinson starts his over round the wicket to Steve Smith, banging the ball in halfway down.
Smith does engage but pulls in a controlled manner for a single before Usman Khawaja is momentarily troubled by a well-directed bumper.
He loses his balance but still swayed clear of the ball. No harm done.

It's almost like a draw is a dirty word. You can take a lot of positives from a draw, take that into the next game and seize the initiative.

Regard Phil Tuffnell at 11:32. Adapting to change is a problem for English team sport in general. Both the National rugby and football teams have the talent to beat anyone, but they fail to change course when plan A doesn’t work.

Maiden over from Josh Tongue as Usman Khawaja once again shows no interest in engaging with the short stuff.
He almost looks disappointed that England think he would consider such a thing.
In this Test match, Josh Tongue has a bowling average of 24.66 to left-handers and 45 v right handers.
But he did dismiss both Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith in the first innings.

Listening to TMS whilst getting ready for my wedding later today- will miss the afternoon session, but the later lunch is perfectly timed for us!

Steve Smith has hit Jimmy Anderson out of the attack with those three boundaries, Josh Tongue is coming on.
The field indicates that he's not going to pitch many in the batters' half.

I think England have looked better when they have been dominating. When Australia have been dominating, they have been more conservative. Their little mistakes haven't been as costly as ours.
