  1. Eng 106-5published at 32 overs

Ben Stokes gets England moving after the drinks break with a flick through square leg for two.

He adds a single with a nice drive to wide mid-off.

Scott Boland comes back with two beauties that whistle past Moeen Ali's bat dangling just outside off.

I appreciate as much as anyone we need to protect Test Cricket, but does anyone else agree bringing in free hits for no balls would be a lot of fun? Especially with these two bowling attacks constantly overstepping.

    Felix, London

Funny you should mention that, Felix. We've just had that discussion in the office. Personally, I don't think it'll be all that long before we see it.

England will be thinking how to counter punch the method. Perhaps Moeen Ali will take on spinner Todd Murphy.

England need a boundary from someone to really get them going.

  5. drinks break

    Eng 102-5published at 31 overs

After getting away with a couple of deliveries sliding down leg to start, Todd Murphy settles in and a tidy first over costs just one - pushed to long off by Ben Stokes.

That'll be drinks. Another good hour for Australia has left Stokes and Moeen Ali trying to work out how to drag England back into this must-win game.

Ooh interesting. We're going to see some spin. Todd Murphy is on to bowl his offies on his Ashes debut.

Will England look to get after him given the current situation?

Stokes is playing with a lot of commitment and discipline here.

You can play confidently on this pitch, it works for everybody. That's what I like about it.

  8. 100 runs

    Eng 101-5published at 30 overs

Another no-ball from Scott Boland is greeted by cheers from the stands as it takes England to 100.

Ben Stokes is defending solidly at the moment, occasionally using his feet to advance to Boland, and he adds his first run for a while with a quick single to mid-on.

A direct hit might have spelt trouble for Moeen Ali!

Ben Stokes is the key, Moeen Ali has played well so far. I think it comes down to this partnership really.

England really need to change tactics now in the series. Strong leadership is to make the best of the situation that one faces. It’s a cop out to say your principles come before delivery.

    Peter from Twyford

I actually think England have gone too much into their shells. The positive approach gets them in better positions to hit balls, but with all the criticism, it all seems very tentative again. We’ll need something heroic to win, but we had better rediscover confidence.

Moeen Ali tickles the ball down the fine leg for another single off Mitchell Starc.

It's slow progress for England at the moment but it is progress...

  12. Cummins beehivepublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

One of the reasons Ben Stokes has had to be so careful is Pat Cummins. It was a brilliant opening spell from the Australia skipper.

Big responsibility for Ben Stokes and there hasn't been much Bazball, he's been careful. There's definitely been a slight change in their method and credit to Australia for not letting England get away.

England's bowlers have been guilty of bowling too many no-balls in this series but their Australian counterparts are infallible either.

Another no-ball from Scott Boland helps nudge the scoreboard on one as the home side edge towards three figures.

    Phew! That is close!

It's is umpire's call on impact, Ben Stokes was just far enough outside the line when it hit him.

The ball was going on to hit middle three quarters of the way up so it's a good job!

It looked like Stokes got out to the line for where bowlers can't run in the middle of the pitch.

  17. Australia reviewpublished at 27.4 overs

Pat Cummins has sent an lbw appeal against Ben Stokes upstairs.

The England skipper was down the pitch to Scott Boland. Was he outside the line?

Another bowling change. Pat Cummins' spell ends after four overs. Some high class bowling from the skipper and he's claimed the big wicket of Joe Root, too.

Scott Boland is back into the attack after a change of ends.

I thought the ball would do less today but it is still swinging. You just feel England just need something here.
