Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Today is about someone stamping their authority on this Ashes, it's an opportunity to go ahead of Australia. There's been so many opportunities missed and they cannot afford to lose this one. It's blue skies and a good wicket to bat on.

We know England are going to play aggressive cricket and they are going to have to build a partnership. A lot relies on Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow, one of them has to get a century to get up to parity.

Thanks, Callum. I think most people would be happy if I only delivered the one wicket in this morning session...

It's yet another crucial day of Ashes cricket and no one wants to miss out. Not least the two lads that cameras have just shown shimmying up onto the roof of a nearby house to get a decent view.

They were well prepared as well. They found their spots and then whipped cushions from under their t-shirts to sit on!

Time for me to take a break.

Sam Drury is going to take over. He only managed to deliver one wicket in his stint yesterday so hopefully he's found some form overnight...

The atmosphere is really building at Headingley now as punters continue to pour in through the turnstiles.

A percussion band is entertaining fans outside the East Stand, while the ‘Yorkies Welcome Team’ - resplendent in bright pink t-shirts - are directing people around and answering any questions.

There’s even a giant Yorkshire CCC-themed deckchair. It’s empty at the moment, but it looks a good spot for any supporter needing a post-lunch nap.

Cricket statistician on Test Match Special

    The questions were:

England took Australia's last six wickets for just 23 runs on day one. For today's questions, think about men's Ashes Tests in this country and:

A: How many years have passed since England took the final six wickets of an Australian innings for fewer than 35 runs?

B: How many Ashes Tests have been played in England in the meantime?

    The answers are:

    A. It is 42 years since England last took Australia’s final six wickets for under 35 runs. The last occasion was in 1981,in the fourth innings of the fourth Test at Edgbaston, when England took Australia's last six wickets for 16. Australia were 105 for 4, chasing 151 to win, when John Emburey had Allan Border caught by Mike Gatting. Ian Botham then bowled a famous spell of 5 for 1 to put England 2-1 ahead in the series.

    B. The current Headingley Test is the 59th men's Ashes Test in England since then.

John Petrie: Root and Bairstow both have a point to prove today after dropped catches cost England dearly yesterday. If they get through the first few overs we could see something special today.

Just bumped into Dickie Bird in the lift of the media centre.

He reckons it is a good day for batting, but says a lot rests on his fellow Yorkshiremen Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow as he has concerns over England's long tail.

    Who am I to disagree?

  16. Booze and boos, but banter trumps hostility in Headingley outerpublished at 10:12 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

In the Sydney Morning Herald Rob Harris reflects on how the opening day at Headingley passed without too much incident and hostility after the final day at Lord's.

There were boos for Alex Carey and Pat Cummins as they batted and some changing of "same old Aussies, always cheating" and "stand up if you hate Carey" but apart from that it was incident-free.

"Authorities feared tensions might bubble over at Headingley for the third Ashes Test, but in the stands the rivalry was more friendly than fierce," says Harris.

Harry Brook is unlikely to bat today after losing his first innings wicket last night, but that hasn’t stopped him being one of the first players out to do some throw downs in the nets with coach Marcus Trescothick.

One particularly short throw has just leapt up and hit Brook square in the chest, winding him for a few seconds.

The Yorkshireman is fine to carry on, though. They are made from tough stuff around here.
