  1. Aus 59-1published at 22 overs

    Lead by 85

Usman Khawaja punches the ball past Ben Stokes at extra cover but Mark Wood goes hurtling round the boundary and dives to make the stop.

Two runs saved. Wood has done it all for England in this match.

That one delivery aside, there is still no real turn or bounce for Moeen Ali, though.

It feels like the game is flowing away from England here.

Wood is looking a little bit less likely than he did yesterday.

  4. Aus 57-1published at 21 overs

Not quite the same rapid pace from Mark Wood as yet but he's still pushing 90mph.

There certainly isn't the same lateral movement we saw yesterday so it's that much more comfortable.

Australia are still a long way from comfortable in the match, though. The pitch at Headingley tended to flatten out in recent years so the tourists will want at least, what? 300? 325?

Mike Bell: If England had rocked up in this Ashes series playing the same as two years ago, they'd have been beaten comfortably. Probably still will be, but been some crackle to the cricket we've seen, and I for one will take defeat plus entertaining sessions over just defeat.

Perhaps Wood is the bit of spark that England need.

More cheers from the crowd as it is announced that Mark Wood is coming into the attack.

England need something from him with the pitch starting to look rather flat.

  8. Aus 56-1published at 20 overs

    Khawaja 24, Labuschagne 30

A very good stop at backward point denies Marnus Labuschagne another boundary.

It was Harry Brook throwing himself to his right to cut it off, drawing applause from the crowd at his home ground.

Australia are just going to bat it nicely, putting the bat ball away, knock it around for ones and twos. As a side you know when you're up against it and England are up against it here.

  10. Aus 54-1published at 19.2 overs

After getting away with a full toss, Moeen Ali is punished when he drags the next one short.

Easy pickings for Marnus Labuschagne, who cuts it away behind square.

A wounded Stokes is out there in the field. He seems to be able to defy injury.

  12. Aus 50-1published at 19 overs

Marnus Labuschagne very nearly finds himself playing at a very wide delivery to start the Stuart Broad over.

He's been guilty of that a few times already this series.

Broad then jags one away from the right-hander but it's too wide and does too much to cause any problems.

Another edge! The ball goes to ground quickly and past diving Ben Stokes at gully for four.

A fan on the front row of the Western Terrace has fallen fast asleep, half-drunk pint still in hand.

Shows how well these Australia batters have done to quieten the crowd.

Usman Khawaja is batting with a lot of patience. It is attritional stuff from Australia but they know they can just wear England's bowlers down in this innings and just bat as long as they can and want to.

We've seen all the moods of Test match cricket iin this series and we're seeing another now.

The batters are just digging in and the bowlers have got to find a way to get them out or force a mistake.

  16. Aus 45-1published at 18 overs

What did that hit?! From nowhere Moeen Ali gets one to turn and bounce extravagantly from just back of a length.

Usman Khawaja is able to get bat and gloves clear of it but he wouldn't have been expecting that. There had been nothing for the spinners prior to that delivery!

At the moment it is quite simple to bowl to Marnus Labuschagne. You just keep bowling that fifth stump line and you will eventually get an edge.

  18. Aus 44-1published at 17 overs

    Lead by 70

For the second time in this innings, the ball loops up off the shoulder of Marnus Labuschagne's bat and lands safely!

It's a bit of extra bounce from Stuart Broad does from him here. It ricocheted off the edge onto Labuschagne's actual shoulder, without that it may have gone to hand.

More than a bit of luck for Marnus so far today.

  19. Aus 43-1published at 16.3 overs

Long half-volley from Stuart Broad and Marnus Labuschagne just eases it through the covers for four.

It's his first shot of note since tea and the ball really did call for it!

  20. Aus 39-1published at 16 overs

    Khawaja 23, Labuschagne 14

The match seems to be taking a breather after a hectic afternoon session.

Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne are looking very comfortable, and neither looks in the mood to take any risks.
