Australia must be thinking this is the innings in which they win the Ashes. If they get beyond 350-400, it's going to be very difficult to chase.

The ball hasn't done very much in this second innings.

  3. Aus 37-1published at 15 overs

    Lead by 63

Both Australia batters are clearly prioritising getting themselves in after tea.

There's not one attacking shot in the over from Marnus Labuschagne. He's happy to block and leave from Stuart Broad after the edge for four first up.

With less assistance for the bowlers, England are going to be made to work for these wickets.

It’s a very hot afternoon at Headingley.

The queues for the water stations are nearly as long as the queues for the bars on the concourses underneath the stands.

There’s a few sunburnt faces grateful for a chance to rest in the shade for a few minutes.

  5. Aus 37-1published at 14.1 overs

    Edged... and four.

Good start from Stuart Broad but the ball went straight to ground from Marnus Labuschagne's bat, between the slips and gully down to the deep third boundary.

  6. Aus 33-1published at 14 overs

Maiden over from Moeen Ali. Tidy stuff from the England off-spinner as he bowls to the watchful Usman Khawaja.

Stuart Broad is going to bowl the next so Joe Root's over was just to allow the seamer to change ends.

Moeen Ali is going to have to play a really important role for England in this innings.

  8. Aus 33-1published at 13 overs

Four from the over. No real threat from Joe Root and Moeen Ali rather than Stuart Broad will bowl the next over.

We'll see if Stuart Broad is back next over.

Obviously Gareth (15.34) didn't read any of the comments in the morning session...

    Adam, Somerset

I think there is a bit overdoing of praise of Ben Stokes. He is very good but England stuffed up a potentially good day and Australia has a lead.

    Dave, Glasgow

3 wickets in the next 5 overs would be nice.

    James, Bognor Regis

  10. Aus 31-1published at 12.2 overs

Singles from the first couple of balls of the session. It doesn't look like there is a great deal of turn for Joe Root.

Is he just on to facilitate a change of ends for Stuart Broad?

Ollie Robinson has emerged to field for the first time since he went off with a back spasm on day one. He's moving very gingerly. I was told during the break he did think he might have a spell in him although it remains unlikely.

  12. Postpublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

Ollie Robinson is also back out on the field for England. That may be England making sure he is available to bowl tomorrow if needed.

Having been off for all of Australia's innings so far, he won't be able to bowl for a while anyway.

Thanks, Callum. The evening session is almost upon us and the sun is still shining at Headingley.

Yet another crucial session in this series. England want wickets, Australia want runs. You know the drill!

But forget what you think you know for a second because it looks like Joe Root is going to bowl the first over of the session...

Time for me to disappear again.

Sam Drury is going to take you through the remainder of the day.

England need wickets. Will they find them?

  15. Postpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne then guided Australia to 29-1 at tea.

That means the tourists, who lead the five-Test series 2-0, have a lead of 55.

  16. Postpublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

That left England with a first-innings deficit of 26.

Stuart Broad then removed David Warner in the third over, caught at slip by Zak Crawley.

It is the 17th time that Broad has got Warner in Test cricket.

Off-spinner Todd Murphy was the man to eventually dismiss Ben Stokes, picking up his first Ashes wicket in the process.

  18. Postpublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

Once again, how often do we say it, Ben Stokes showed some remarkable hitting.

He needed some luck along the way, but there aren't many innings in cricket that are chanceless.

  19. Postpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

Stuart Broad was the next man out, making just seven from eight balls.

He did share 32 with Ben Stokes, though.

  20. Postpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

Ben Stokes then decided to go on the attack, hitting Mitchell Starc for three successive boundaries.
