England’s fans continue to clap every run, occasionally breaking out into renditions of the Great Escape. I think it’s helping dealing with the nerves too. Good to be doing something.

Australia will be pretty happy with their morning and getting two wickets.

They will just talking about toiling away, putting the ball in the right areas and another wicket they'll be right in the game.

    Thanks Timothy.

    Hey everyone. How are we?

Nervous? Confident? Hiding behind the sofa?

It's been a pretty even morning so far, both sides will be pretty happy with the progress they've made I reckon.

Drinks breakpublished at 12:07 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

A tense first hour in which England have lost two wickets. I need a drink, massage and some cucumbers on my eyes.

Rest assured you're in safe hands, though, in the form of Callum Matthews. He will take you through to lunch.

They know their cricket up here. They know it is tight.

They know if this partnership goes until lunch we can all start to breath and settle down.

Joe Root runs Mitch Marsh's third ball through point to give the strike back to Zak Crawley.

More convincingly this time the tall Kent opener cuts Marsh wide of gully for four. That's much better.

Final ball of the over and Crawley straight drives but Marsh gets down to get a paw on it.

Here's how Root got off the mark a few moments ago.

Yes, the jolly Green giant would have extended those Inspector Gadget arms and grabbed that from about 10 feet in the air.

A double change for Australia as all-rounder Mitch Marsh comes into the attack. Zak Crawley is a little controlled with a cut to point for a single off his first ball.

    Cam Green catches that.

  9. Eng 74-2published at 17 overs

Palpitations from many of those in the ground as Zak Crawley throws the kitchen sink at a wide one from Scott Boland. The ball flashes high over the slip cordon and goes through third for four.

    Steady now, Zak.

This is a great chance for Zak Crawley.

He's had so much investment from the England team, they just love the way that he plays.

This is a great day for him to repay them.

  11. Eng 70-2published at 16.3 overs

Change of bowling by Pat Cummins as Scott Boland is brought into the attack. An expansive play and miss from Zak Crawley first up, but the England batter gets himself in line to the next two balls.

If England can get across the line here today, I just have a feeling it might start something.

The Aussies might look at themselves and their whole mindset might change.

Will Millard: Is it too much to ask that just, for once, this is a comfortable, enjoyable, chance-less chase? Please.

  14. Eng 70-2published at 16 overs

That's more like it from Joe Root.

He gets off the mark with a stylish cover drive to Mitchell Starc's third ball. It's wide and full from the left-arm paceman and Root drops back on to his heels before elegantly pushing forward to generate the momentum through the stroke.

The ball skids away across the turf for four.

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

England are in a very strong position. They are used to chasing and they've chased a total bigger than this four times in the last year.

This is what they are set up for. They will go about it in a one-day fashion.

If the ball swings I think we'll have a dramatic day, if it doesn't I think England have the capability to see this target off quite quickly.

They play cricket to set up chases like this.

Moeen Ali was at number three for the seventh time in his Test career, but alas it's hard to see the experiment being repeated after his leg stump was uprooted by Mitchell Starc.

Unless another mantra of Bazball is double down on such decisions?

    Here's his wicket anyway.

Root is critical to this run chase. Can't leave it all to Stokes again.

I reckon Joe Root was out there if that hit. He was a bit dozy there.

He might have just made it looking at the replay, but it was close.

  19. Eng 64-2published at 15 overs

Next over and almost a chance of a run out as Joe Root looks short of his ground taking a second to the non-striker's end but the throw misses after Zak Crawley drives Pat Cummins for a couple.

The England batter has started a little nervously here.

Plenty of nervous laughter in the stands after that play and miss from Joe Root.
