What is that? Simon, what is that?

I don't want to see that from England's best player.

That is just nerves I reckon with the pressure of the game.

  2. Eng 60-2published at 14 overs

Audible gasp from the crowd as Joe Root plays and misses at the final ball of Mitchell Starc's over, and the first of his innings.

Australia will feel like if they can get Joe Root they are potentially on top. Everyone is vulnerable in the first 15-20 minutes.

England are wobbling, it’s time for Joe Root to steady the ship. He and Crawley need to build a solid partnership now with the Aussie having their tails up.

That is a lovely sight for Mitchell Starc with a stump lying flat on the ground.

Australia are right back in this game.

    Moeen Ali b Starc 5 (Eng 60-2)

Well the theory might have been sound, anyway. The reality quite different as Mitchell Starc splatters Moeen Ali's stumps.

It's quick and full from the Aussie left-arm fast bowler and Moeen attempted to drive the ball, but instead an inside edge takes it between bat, pad and into his leg pole.

He's trudging back to the pavilion.

Butlins McCarthy: Think it's less about Moeen Ali at three and more about Harry Brook facing an older ball.

Love this. Harry Brook looked lost at three. Make an error, correct it immediately. If Ali can hang around for an hour, take some shine off the new ball and tire the bowlers in time for a Root onslaught he would have done a great job.

Whether Australia's players go on to the fact Moeen Ali might becoming in at three only they will know. As I mentioned earlier, there was a clue in the fact he had the longest net session of any player this morning before play began.

Have you seen a batter make batting look as comfortable as Zak Crawley but only average 28?

“If we lose a wicket now, that’s coming straight down,” the owner is told firmly!

Moeen Ali will play with greater freedom and play some shots, Matt. He's maybe better utilised here than if England find themselves in a pickle later on when, you have thought, Harry Brook will be better suited to that type of situation. The left-right hand combination might be something they think is working, too.

Australia will not have been expecting it either so it's all part of the brain-scrambling, instinctive and innovative, don't play by the rules, Bazball approach.

I'm not a massively knowledgeable about cricket so can someone explain to me why Moeen Ali is batting at number number three?

Tend to agree with Michael Vaughan regarding Harry Brook. At least England reacted quickly to that one.

Zak Crawley pulls out of hook shot to a bouncer from Pat Cummins and the ball slips down the legs side, beats the dive of wicketkeeper Alex Carey, and races away for four byes.

Moeen is such a dangerous player. He times the ball beautifully when he's in. It is a very good move from England.

Harry Brook didn't look right or comfortable at three at all. This gives England a better chance. It feels like the game is on a knife edge though.

Here's the wicket of Ben Duckett. A questionable review at best, you'd have to say.

  18. Eng 52-1published at 11.3 overs

A hearty applause from the Headingley crowd as Zak Crawley pushes one through the covers to bring up the England fifty.

Next ball of Mitchell Starc's over and Moeen Ali drives it through the covers for a couple.

Ben Stokes, hoody pulled over his head like in the manner of a twitchy teenager, is sat next to the uber cool Brendon McCullum on the balcony at Headingley.

This is Zak Crawley's 18th Test at home and this is the first time he's scored at least 20 in both innings.

  20. Eng 49-1published at 11.0 overs

    Kudos for that one, Jon.

Zak Crawley flicks one off his legs to keep the strike off the penultimate ball of that Pat Cummins over.

Moeen Ali has a dabble at one wide outside off stump and there is a slight noise, but it's not leather on willow.
