England, at 27-0 chasing 251 to win, need another 224 to win with all 10 fourth-innings wickets remaining. This is the 10th time they have batted in the fourth innings since Stokes & McCullum began the S&M era of English cricket.

For today's guess (and please do not contravene the intermittently-applied and morally malleable 'Spirit Of Cricket Quizzes' by scuttling off to Statsguru to look it up), what has England's average runs per wicket in fourth innings been since the start of last summer?

And for a moral bonus point, what was England's average fourth innings runs per wicket over the previous seven years, from May 2015 until the Bazballistic revolution began?

All cops are batters? One of the most striking images from yesterday during the rain breaks was this member of the local constabulary taking part in one of the many impromptu games involving spectators behind the stands.

Thankfully, the forecast is much better today so all the eyes will be on what's occurring in the middle.

The Sunday Express headline writers have given the back page splash written by Mike Walters the type of pun headline he would doubtless approve of.

Hero of the hour Chris Woakes helped "blitz the Aussies" he wrote as the England all-rounder boosted hopes of hopes of a Headingley victory after a "wet and wild" day three.

In the Mail on Sunday, Lawrence Booth celebrated the contribution of Chris Woakes, who has gone from a forgotten man to England hero.

He wrote: "As Chris Woakes took the big wickets of Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey on the rain-delayed third evening of another gripping Ashes battle, it was strange to think that his previous Test had taken place in a time before Bazball.

"It was March 2022 in Grenada, and the dying days of the Joe Root era, when Woakes was handed the deflating task of opening the bowling against a West Indies team who needed 28 to clinch the series.

"They won by 10 wickets and that, for Root, was that. And when Woakes underwent knee surgery that summer to ensure he was fit for England’s successful tilt at the T20 World Cup in Australia, he drifted almost unnoticed out of the Test-match conversation.

"But Woakes is nothing if not the consummate pro, and bided his time as a popular squad member. Come Headingley, with Jimmy Anderson in need of a rest and Ben Stokes still exhausted from his 12-over spell in the second Test, Bazball England finally called for Woakes. Match figures of six for 141 tell you he has not let them down."

Nick Hoult, chief cricket correspondent at the Telegraph, has evoked the spirit of Stokes in his match report from day three as England look for more magic in LS6.

He wrote: "It was a golden Sunday at Headingley four years ago that went down in Ashes history and those lucky enough to have tickets this Sunday are in for another memorable occasion.

"England require a further 224 runs to win the third Ashes Test and stay in the series. Australia need 10 wickets to retain the urn and win their first series in England since 2001.

"Turn on the television, turn up the radio and log on to the live blog. Everything is on the line and it’s sure to be a showstopper."

England finally have the belief they can win the Women's Ashes for the first time since 2014, says World Cup winner Alex Hartley.

Hartley credits England's aggressive mindset under head coach Jon Lewis as key to their success.

England won the T20 leg of the multi-format series by beating Australia by five wickets at Lord's on Saturday.

"The way this team believe in themselves, it's almost like they are thinking, 'what have we been doing for all these years!?'" Hartley said on BBC Test Match Special.

"Australia are human and they are making mistakes.

"Yes, they are a remarkable cricket team and the best in the world and yes, they don't lose many cricket matches, but England have self-belief and that is what Jon Lewis has done."

Women's Ashes 2023: England inflict first series defeat on Australia since 2017

Now it's not just England's men who are making a fist of their Ashes scuffle.

England's women beat Australia by five wickets in a rain-affected third T20 of the multi-format Ashes at Lord's, inflicting a first series defeat on the world champions since 2017.

The result also narrows the overall points-based Ashes scoreline to 6-4 with three one-day internationals remaining, each worth two points.

England were set a revised target of 119 in 14 overs and reached it with four balls remaining, set up by Alice Capsey's electric 46 from 23 balls.

The majority of day three was wiped out due to rain, although the cricket we did have was enthralling.

Thankfully, the sun is shining in Headingley at the moment and the forecast is much better for today on the whole.

We should be good until late afternoon when there are some thundery showers expected.

There's enough good weather, barring something unexpected, for a result in this Test match today.

What a position England find themselves in. If you'd have asked Ben Stokes when he won the toss on day one 'you have 221 runs to get, all 10 wickets in hand' he'd have snapped your hand off.

England need another 224 runs to win the third Test and keep their Ashes hopes alive after a thrilling rain-shortened third day at Headingley.

The hosts reached 27-0 at the close, chasing 251, after bowling Australia out for 224.

England took advantage of perfect bowling conditions to turn Australia's 116-4 into 170-8 after rain prevented any play until just before 17:00 BST.

At that stage Australia's lead was 196 but Travis Head batted superbly to help add another 54 for the final two wickets.

He batted in the style of Ben Stokes, striking seven fours and three sixes, in his 77 before being caught in the deep.

That left England with a perilous 25 minutes to bat but Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett hit four fours in five overs to give England a platform.

Defeat for England will see Australia win an Ashes series in England for the first time since 2001.
