    Well, what a day!

The Ashes are well and truly alive after another sensational Test match that England edged by three wickets at Headingley.

Chris Woakes was the man of the hour, hitting the winning runs in a calm and collected 32* upon his return to the side.

The men's series returns on 19 July at Old Trafford, but don't worry - there is still plenty of cricket for you to enjoy.

England women are also battling in the Ashes after back-to-back T20 wins in the multi-format series, and they continue with the ODIs that start on Wednesday 12 July at 13:00 in Bristol.

And don't miss any of it - we'll bring you live text commentary, in-play clips and BBC Test Match Special of every game.

Don't forget to watch today's highlights on BBC Two and iPlayer from 19:00 BST.

You can read my colleague Matt Henry's match report from Headingley here.

And there is reaction from England captain Ben Stokes here.

What a summer it's turning out to be!

The Harry Brook experiment at three may not have worked but he certainly chose a great time to make his mark on the series.

A brilliant innings under pressure on his home ground. I'm sure he would have loved to hit the winning runs, but it was some effort.

  4. 'Great that Wood & Woakes got us over the line'published at 16:49 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

England captain Ben Stokes at the post-match presentation: "It was really good. It was another down-to-the-wire game. It was nice to get over the line and keep our hopes alive.

We decided to bowl because of the conditions and because of the record chasing here. It looked a very good wicket. We've seen that, especially with how Mitch Marsh batted. He really turned the game on its head for us when we were in a commanding position. You've got to give credit for how we took he game on. It was easy to score when you got on, especially with the outfield being as quick as it was.

"We brought Woody and Woakesy back in and it is great when you make decisions like that and they help you get over the line."

Has anyone managed to calm down yet?

  6. 'I had a little blow up when I got out'published at 16:41 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

Harry Brook talking to Sky Sports: "It it a lot more nerve-wracking when you're in the dressing room. I'm not one to blow up in the changing room but I had a little blow up today. I like getting us over the line and it was annoying that I didn't today.

"Everyone erupted with the winning moment. Everyone was buzzing. It was tense for a little while but when Woody hit that six we knew it was on.

"Playing here in an Ashes Test was probably the best part to be honest. I'll know a lot of people in the crowd and to do it in front of a home crowd was really nice."

On the demand for tickets: "Honestly that is the worse part about being a professional cricketer! Every single person messages you asking for a ticket. There were quite a few out there."

Was he worried when he got out: "Not really. We only needed about 20 and I had complete and utter faith in Woakesy and Woody. We saw the way he batted in the first innings. I had faith in him."

I think it's a waste Harry Brook batting at three so there are some selection concerns when the dust settles.

The one thing that struck me about this England side, at 2-0 down they had to pull it out by hook or by Brook!

That shows there's a real belief and togetherness. Sometimes you crumble but England have stood up.

    Old Trafford will be rocking.

  9. 'Moeen asked to bat at three'published at 16:32 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

More from England captain Ben Stokes, talking about the decision to move Moeen Ali up to three: "The thing about Mo is that he always wants to impact the game, whether that is with the bat or ball. He came up to Brendon last night and said 'I want to have a crack at three and take these guys on'. He felt like he could have more of an impact at three. We obviously had a longer batting line-up with Woakesy coming in at eight. It wasn't necessarily a free hit for us but I loved that in the pressure of a chase he wanted to go out and deliver for the team.

"I don't think it will be a permanent solution. Me and Baz go with the flow of things and if something comes into our head and we think it is a positive move then we'll maybe go with it or not."

On the nine-day break before the fourth Test at Old Trafford: "Yeah I think it will be great for both teams. At 2-1 the next game is vital for both teams so you want everyone to be fresh and ready to go. Everyone wants to see good cricket, and the first three games have been unbelievable and everyone has been on the edge o their seats, particularly at the back end so the nine-day break will do quite a few bodies the world of good."

I would go James Anderson for Ollie Robinson at Old Trafford.

I think Moeen Ali can bat three. He didn't score the runs, but it helps strengthen the rest of the batting.

There's going to be talk about Jonny Bairstow, we can't shy away from that, but I don't think England can't back away from the plan they have started with.

What a spectacle it's going to be at Old Trafford.

It feels like a 50-50 game, and if England win that it will be on to The Oval at 2-2 with winner takes all.

There is - for once - a chance for the players to get a decent rest between this Test and the fourth, which starts at Old Trafford on 19 July.

What will Stokes and McCullum do selection-wise? The number three dilemma has still not been solved.

Does Stuart Broad need a rest? James Anderson back in to prove a point?

If fit, do Chris Woakes and Mark Wood keep their place?

Australia are front running. They are the hunted and this England side like being the hunters.

They want to run them down and chase them down. It's the way they like like to perform.

There will be a few wobbles for Australia.

If England go up to Old Trafford and strike that first blow - a few early wickets if they bowl or a partnership if they bat - it could unravel for the Australians. It's beautifully teed up.

  15. 'Amazing to be a part of'published at 16:13 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

England bowler Chris Woakes has been speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "What an amazing game to be a part of. Watching the first two Tests from side lines, we didn't want to be 2-0 down but that's how we found ourselves.

"We wanted to put in a good performance, it was up and down, but to be 2-1 going into Old Trafford and still in the series is a great place to be.

On his own performance: "It was tricky actually, coming up the hill at Headingley I don't particularly enjoy it. I don't normally get my rhythm but I got it quickly. The early wicket of Marnus settled me down, always good to get a big scalp like that.

On Harry Brook: "What you see is what you get with Harry, not much, he's just laughing and joking around. It's his way of staying clear, he's a very good player, he's got a calm head on his shoulders. His 75 was the difference, I wish he was there at the end."

Nerves in the middle: "Probably not until we needed four. We've got a crazy spell in us, when me and Harry were there and got it down, their heads seemed to drop. There's always twists in Ashes, when Woody went six then four, it calmed us."

How have the Headingley crowd been?: "The fans have been fantastic, very similar to 2019 in terms of noise. The fans have been great, the same as Old Trafford. To win a game is big for the team, we'll enjoy tonight but then regroup and go again.

It's only gone to three and a half days, but the start of this Test feels like a lifetime ago already.

It's had it all. Broad to Warner, Marsh's counter-attacking hundred, Stokes' first-innings onslaught.

And there's still two to go! What a ride.

  17. 'Key moments let us down'published at 16:07 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

Australia captain Pat Cummins at the post-match presentation: "There were a few moments that went back and forth and that was each day really. On the first day we lost six for 20-odd and yesterday the sun was out and we probably missed an opportunity. It was just a couple of key moments.

"It seems like a series where one session swings in one teams favour and then the next session the other team picks it up. I wouldn't mind a stress-free one!

"We were in control when Moeen got Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith and we just needed to keep going. Unfortunately it happens. I thought getting up to 250 gave us something pretty competitive to bowl at but it wasn't quite enough."

On David Warner, and faith in him to find form: "Of course. I thought last week at Lord's he was absolutely fantastic. There has often been lights and clouds up above when he's been batting. I am really happy with how everyone is going."

On Mitch Marsh: "Yeah, I suppose it is a good problem. He was awesome. It was good to see him back in and there are a few headaches ahead."

On a break now: "It doesn't hurt. We'll take a few days off to recharge and people are flying to various places and then we'll come back together and ready for Manchester."

Now time to hear from the Australia camp.

Pat Cummins' side have edged two close encounters before this, and now the shoe is on the other foot.

But they certainly kept England on their toes...

I love that a player like Moeen Ali has gone to the coach and said, "I'll do it."

Ben Stokes said it didn't work but it did work, because it got Harry Brook at number five.

Harry isn't a number three. Whether Moeen it saw that with Harry not quite being comfortable and being a senior pro, it would help the young kid. It certainly worked.

  20. 'Higher than nine and I'll get a nose bleed'published at 16:01 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

Player of the match Mark Wood, who took 7-100 and scored 40 runs, at the post-match presentation: "I am delighted to be stood here and great for us to win the match and it keeps the series alive.

"I was not good in the dressing room! Sweaty palms all the way! It is a lot easier in the middle than when you're sat up there. It was tough against some of the best bowlers in the world and it is the first time I've got England over the line with the bat so I'm delighted.

"It is absolutely too soon for all-rounder status! I'm happy down at number nine. I think that is too high and any higher I'm definitely getting a nose bleed!"
