  1. wicket

WICKET Pepper c Vince b Turner 33published at 18:05 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 v Essex 118-6

John Turner grabs his second for Hampshire with a ball that does enough to find the edge and that brings Michael Pepper's innings to an end.

Good catch by James Vince, leading forward to gather up the catch at first slip and Essex are still fractionally behind as their sixth wicket - probably their seventh, in effect, goes down.

  2. wicket

    WICKET - A Davies c J Davies b Bamber 0published at 18:02 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60 & 3-1, Middlesex 9-1

    Oh My Sainted Trousers!

Alex Davies is gone first ball - to the third ball of the innings.

21 wickets in the day in Birmingham.

Ethan Bamber induces an injudicious edge from Alex Davies which is parried at first slip, allowing Jack Davies to run around behind him and take a diving catch.

  3. Postpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 119-4

    Glorious shot from Will Jacks!

Matt Henry offers up a rare half volley and Jacks sends it down the ground to the fence.

Lovely batting and you need to take those chances when Henry is bowling so well.

  4. Postpublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 v Essex 111-5

Michael Pepper now has the honour of being the first player in the match to reach 30 - something you might not have expected at this stage of the first day's play.

Adam Rossington has started brightly alongside him, with 13 not out as Essex edge towards overhauling Hampshire's first-innings total.

  5. Postpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 111-4

Tom Abell is really backing Matt Henry here as he gives the New Zealand paceman four slips.

He nearly delivers again as he twice has Will Jacks playing at thin air.

Jacks then gets bat on one and sets off and is sent back.

He would have been miles out if Sean Dickson had hit but the Somerset man is off target with his throw.

  6. dropped catch

by Ben Comptonpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Notts 217-4 v Kent

Oh dear me! That looked impossible for Ben Compton to miss at first slip.

Steven Mullaney gets a thick edge off Arshdeep Singh and the ball just sails in the direction of Compton, around chest height and not particularly fast - yet somehow he shells the chance.

Mullaney is 16 not out and this is developing into another solid partnership for Notts with Tom Moores.

  7. wicket

MIDDLESEX BOWLED OUT FOR 199published at 17:49 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

Bamber lbw Hannon-Dalby 4 (Warwickshire 60 all out, Middlesex 199 all out)

Oliver Hannon-Dalby comes back into the Warwickshire attack - and takes just one ball to end the Middlesex innings as he has Ethan Bamber trapped leg beforw wicket.

20 wickets now in the day at Edgbaston - and Bears openers Rob Yates and Alex Davies must pad up again for the second time today.

16 overs left to be bowled today. You would think not enough for Warwickshire to be bowled out a second time. After all, they lasted 22.5 overs first time round. But then this has so far been a rather crazy day . . .

  8. wicket

WICKET Gay c Salt b Balderson 144published at 17:43 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Lancashire v Northamptonshire 296-5

    What a pity!

Emilio Gay falls one short equalling his career best score as he plays a loose drive off George Balderson.

He had batted for 90 overs and 250 balls for his innings and unfurled some classy strokes in his near-six-hour stay at the crease.

  9. 50 runs

for Tom Lathampublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 107-4

A fine clip to the long-on boundary is enough for Tom Latham to get his half-century.

It is a second 50 for Surrey for the doughty New Zealand left-hander.

  10. 100 runs

up for Surreypublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 103-4

The Surrey 100 is reached but it could easily have been their fifth wicket down instead.

Tom Latham almost goes to leave one from Craig Overton that climbs up but it hits the bottom of the bat.

Sean Dickson at third slip is taken by surprise and the ball flies over him before he can react and it runs down to the boundary.

  11. wicket

    WICKET - Roland-Jones hit wkt b Barnard 21published at 17:40 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60, Middlesex 182-9

Very unusual, if not unique, dismissal for Toby Roland-Jones - and Ed Barnard gets a third wicket.

Having gone past 180 to triple Warwickshire's earlier score of 60, TRJ attempts to belt Ed Barnard into the Hollies Stand.

It clears the rope - and the six is signalled. But then it became clear that his motion in hitting the shot had carried his bat back onto the stumps. And instead of 'six', the decison is 'out', following a consultation between the two umps.

A classic case of 'Six and out'. But was it really 'out'? The clear suggestion is that the bowl was over the rope before the bat made contact with the stumps.

Hard one to call, and it probably won't matter. But it probably should have been 'not out'.

  12. wicket

WICKET - Bean lbw b Potts 46published at 17:38 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Yorkshire 113-1 v Durham

Back underway in Scarborough after the loss of more than a session - and Fin Bean is out, to the seventh ball after the restart.

  13. wicket

WICKET Foakes c Rew b Henry 8published at 17:33 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 95-4

Matt Henry is recalled into the attack by Somerset skipper Tom Abell and only needs three balls to strike.

It's a terrific delivery that Ben Foakes can only nick behind to his opposite number.

Henry has 3-17 in this innings.

  14. 200 runs

up for Nottspublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Notts 209-4 v Kent

Nottinghamshire have begun building again after that lengthy rain delay, with Steven Mullaney seizing on a short ball from Joey Evison and pumping it to the fence to bring his side's total beyond 200.

The Notts captain is 16 not out, with Tom Moores on 27 at the other end.

  15. wicket

    WICKET - De Caires c Burgess b Barnard 37published at 17:30 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60, Middlesex 167-8

Having removed one, Ed Barnard then gets the other.

He induces a top edge from Josh De Caires - and the son of the former England opener is taken by Bears wicketkeeper Michael Burgess for 37.

  16. wicket

WICKET Critchley lbw b Turner 29published at 17:29 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 v Essex 93-5

What an entrance by John Turner!

The young Hampshire seamer is handed the ball for the first time in the match and his first delivery traps Matt Critchley in front.

Essex still trail by 27 as Adam Rossington makes his way to the middle.

  17. Postpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 90-3

Gorgeous straight drive from Ben Foakes down the ground for four.

The Surrey wicketkeeper may not play in the same buccaneering way as Jonny Bairstow but he is a fine batter in his own right.

  18. Postpublished at 17:21 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 v Essex 88-4

Michael Pepper clearly believes in taking the attack to the bowlers - he's been dancing down the wicket to both Mohammad Abbas and Kyle Abbott with some success.

Pepper's done most of the scoring since tea, rattling up 24 at a run a ball with four boundaries. That's allowed Matt Critchley to take something of a back seat and he is still unbeaten on 28 - the highest score of the match so far.

  19. wicket

WICKET Procter lbw b Williams 75published at 17:18 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Lancashire v Northamptonshire 266-4

Lancashire appeal again and this time the finger goes up!

Will Williams sends one into Luke Procter's pads and the left-hander is adjudged LBW.

The Northants skipper really dug in for his 212-ball stay at the crease and it ends a partnership of 207 between him and Emilio Gay.

  20. wicket

    WICKET - Higgins b Barnard 53published at 17:16 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60, Middlesex 148-7

Another bowling change works for the Bears.

Ed Barnard strikes with the first ball of the 46th over as Ryan Higgins attempts to cut - and chops on.

Josh De Caires (29) is joined by Toby Roland-Jones.
