  1. wicket

    WICKET A Cook c Brown b Abbott 4published at 15:30 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 v Essex 16-2

It looked inevitable this consistent Hampshire bowling would generate further wickets - and Kyle Abbott is the man who strikes, having Alastair Cook caught behind.

Paul Walter is the new man in for Essex.

  2. at Trent Bridgepublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Notts 190-4 v Kent

It's been dark overhead for a while, but it doesn't seem to have worsened recently - or developed into rain - so slightly surprising that the umpires have taken the players off the field.

Notts have advanced to 190-4, with Tom Moores on 17 and Steven Mullaney seven.

There will be an early tea, we think.

  3. Spin, spin and more spinpublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Lancashire v Northamptonshire 174-3

Luke Wells bowls his first over of part-time leg-breaks as Lancashire try to break this partnership.

Of the 60 overs in the innings, 27 have been bowled by spinners between Wells, Jack Morley and Tom Hartley.

  4. wicket

SOMERSET ALL OUT FOR 170published at 15:20 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

Somerset 170 all out v Surrey

Dan Worrall is fast and straight and knocks over Ben Green's stumps.

Champions Surrey have delivered a terrific bowling display after Somerset won the toss.

Batting is usually their stronger suit although they will have to be careful of Matt Henry and Craig Overton with the new ball.

Somerset will need those two to fire to have any chance of getting back into the game.

  5. wicket

    WICKET - Davies c Yates b Brookes 18published at 15:20 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60, Middlesex 59-5

A first wicket for Henry Brookes.

After getting within a run of the paltry Warwickshire total, Middlesex lose their fifth wicket.

Henry Brookes gets a bit of extra bounce, Jack Davies fends one off in fcront of his face and edges to Rob Yates, who takes a sharp slip catch.

The new man in is Ryan Higgins.

  6. wicket

WICKET Henry c Foakes b Atkinson 16published at 15:15 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170-9 v Surrey

As we said, Matt Henry is not known for sticking around!

Gus Atkinson bangs in a short ball, which Henry follows and he gets a nick down leg to the safe hands of Ben Foakes.

A fourth catch of the innings for Foakes.

And before anyone starts - the Foakes v Jonny Bairstow debate is over for this summer...

  7. Postpublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 v Essex 8-1

Alastair Cook's long-honed defensive technique is being put to the test now as Hampshire's opening bowlers squeeze the life out of the Essex reply.

Mohammad Abbas and Kyle Abbott have just produced four successive maidens between them, with Cook and Tom Westley finding it impossible to get the ball off the square at the moment.

  8. Postpublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170-8 v Surrey

Matt Henry is not known for hanging around and he whacks successive fours off Tom Lawes.

His 16 runs have come in four hits!

  9. 50 runs

50 up for Middlesexpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60, Middlesex 53-4

The 50 up for the visitors at Edgbaston.

And they have got there for the loss of just four wickets.

The Bears were nine down when they reached the same landmark earlier.

  10. Back on in Birminghampublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60, Middlesex 49-4 (19 overs)

    That was quick.

Back on again in Birmingham - and the Bears make a second bowling change.

Following the earlier introduction of Ed Barnard, Henry Brookes now comes on for OHD, in what his only a second Championship appearance of the season for him.

  11. 100 runs

partnershippublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Lancashire v Northamptonshire 159-3

Luke Procter nudges one behind square to bring up the 100-run stand between him and Emilio Gay off 195 balls. Procter has 35 and Gay, 81.

They dug in before lunch and have batted nicely in the afternoon.

Given their batting problems all summer, this stand is so important for Northants.

  12. 150 runs

up for Somersetpublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 153-8 v Surrey

Ben Green gets off the mark, cracking one through the offside to bring up the 150.

He will need a few more of those for Somerset to reach anything like a decent total.

  13. wicket

WICKET Browne b Abbas 6published at 15:00 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 v Essex 8-1

Here's what the Hampshire crowd came to see Mohammad Abbas doing - the seamer sends down one that straightens and hits the off stump of Nick Browne as the home side look to fight back.

Essex skipper Tom Westley replaces Browne in the middle.

  14. wicket

WICKET Slater c Finch b Singh 100published at 14:59 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Notts 169-4 v Kent

Ben Slater may have a century to his name, but he didn't look a happy camper after being given out caught behind.

Jas Singh gets one to move away from the left-hander and the apparent thin edge is clasped by Harry Finch.

The light has worsened, though, and the floodlights come on to herald Tom Moores' arrival at the wicket.

  15. Postpublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 v Essex 8-0

A steady start for Essex as they reply to Hampshire's total of 120, although there's been a few examples of play and miss from both Nick Browne and Alastair Cook so far.

Browne has six and Cook is on two after the first four overs of the innings.

  16. 100 runs

for Ben Slaterpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Notts 166-3 v Kent

Ben Slater punches the air with delight as he drives Jas Singh for three to long on and brings up his 11th first-class hundred - his first of the season.

Slater has played very nicely after a slow start and gets to the landmark from 150 balls.

  17. rain stops play

Rain stops play in Birminghampublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60, Middlesex 48-4

And, sure enough, off they come!

And the hover cover is on.

After 30 minutes without a wicket (comfortably the longest stretch of the match), the action is finally brought to a halt by the elements.

  18. wicket

    WICKET C Overton c Foakes b J Overton 5published at 14:48 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 145-8 v Surrey

But Jamie is the ultimate winner in this contest!

The Surrey bowler bangs one in that rises enough to catch the glove of the Somerset batter and Craig Overton is caught behind.

Four, dot, wicket. That counts as a victory for Jamie.

  19. Overton v Overtonpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 145-7 v Surrey

Craig Overton is the new batter and twin brother Jamie has the ball.

And Craig gets a tickle down to fine leg for four off the first one.

  20. rain stops play

Rain in the air at Edgbastonpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60, Middlesex 48-4

    There's movement in the crowd . . .

And rain in the air in Birmingham.

Brollies are going up. And the hover cover is hovering.

Umpires Hassan Adnan and Rob Bailey consult.
