    Lancashire v Northamptonshire 266-3

Lancashire think they have Luke Procter caught behind off Tom Bailey, but the ball comes off the batter's thigh pad before Phil Salt takes it.

The Red Rose are desperate for a wicket, and so they are appealing for anything.

This is now Northants' highest first-innings score of the season.

    Lancashire v Northamptonshire 261-3

Tom Bailey sends down a no-ball that flies past the wicketkeeper down legside to the boundary.

Those six runs take the partnership between Emilio Gay and Luke Procter to 202 as Northants continue on their merry way.

WICKET Smith c Lammonby b Green 44published at 17:04 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 78-3

    Somerset badly needed this one!

Jamie Smith is looking dangerous but as he advances down the pitch to Ben Green, he doesn't get fully over the ball and sends it to midwicket where it is well caught one-handed by Tom Lammonby.

Smith goes for 44 at more than a run-a-ball.

Half century for Higginspublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60, Middlesex 144-6

Ryan Higgins reaches his half-century, off 57 balls.

His hour and 20 minutes at the crease has been very productive.

Seven fours and a six.Middlesex alrady lead by 84.

Josh De Caires looks well set on 28

The pair have now put on 67 - more than double the best previous partnership in the match, the 28 shared by Jack Davies and John Simpson for the fifth Middlesex wicket.

  6. 250 runs

Northants double batting pointspublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Lancashire v Northamptonshire 250-3

Luke Procter turns one behind square for a single to bring up the 250 for Northants.

It is their first batting point of the match and just their second of the season.

Batting woes are the reason why they are stuck at the bottom of Division One.

  7. NOTTS & KENT TO RESUME AT 5.15published at 17:01 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Notts 190-4 v Kent

The covers have now all been removed at Trent Bridge and, as long it remains dry, the players will be back out there in around 15 minutes' time.

There are 27 overs scheduled for the rest of the day.

  8. Postpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 v Essex 72-4

Mohammad Abbas is back into the Hampshire attack as well - and thought he'd taken another wicket just now.

Matt Critchley was tempted outside off stump and Abbas was convinced ball had met bat on the way through to wicketkeeper Ben Brown.

Umpire Rob White disagreed and Critchley remains 28 not out, with Essex now 48 behind the hosts' first innings total.

  9. 50 runs

partnershippublished at 16:53 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 65-2

Tom Latham takes a single off Shoaib Bashir's first ball and that is the 50 partnership between him and Jamie Smith.

As ever, Surrey's batting power is coming to the fore.

  10. 50 runs

up for Surreypublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 53-2

Tom Latham helps a short ball from Kasey Aldridge down to the fine leg boundary.

That is the 50 up for Surrey as they eat into Somerset's low total.

  11. An hour without a wicket at Edgbastonpublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60, Middlesex 131-6

We have now gone over an hour since the last wicket fell at Edgbaston.

Middlesex wicketkeeper John Simpson at 15:40.

Admittedly, we have had a 20-minute tea/rain break in between but, even so, that is quite a feat on a day when 16 wickets had fallen previously.

Middlesex now lead by a whopping 71.

  12. Postpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 v Essex 64-4

The bad news for Essex is that Kyle Abbott is refreshed and storming in to begin his second spell just after tea.

The good news is they still have Matt Critchley - who's played well for his 24 not out - at the crease and Michael Pepper has now joined him there.

Worth keeping in mind, of course, that the visitors may not have a full batting line-up in the light of Shane Snater's injury.

  13. Postpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 49-2

Jamie Smith cracks a lovely drive through the offside for four.

Then Craig Overton compensates and sends one onto the pads and that is disaptched through midwicket.

The big man then drops short and Smith pulls it for three fours in a row.

Make that four as he guides one down to third man!

  14. A lot of hard yakka at Old Traffordpublished at 16:36 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Lancashire v Northamptonshire 227-3

This is only the third Championship game of the season at Old Trafford but it has been a batter's track this summer.

The other two matches both finished in draws with 29 wickets in one match and 25 in the other.

That is 54 wickets out of a possible 80 and a lot of hard yakka.

  15. Pitch inspection at Trent Bridgepublished at 16:36 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Notts 190-4 v Kent

The good news is that the rain appears to have stopped and the umpires will inspect the surface at 4.50pm.

Hopefully we'll get a resumption of play in the near future.

  16. Back underway in Birminghampublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60, Middlesex 123-6

We're underway now at Edgbaston for a potentially quite long third session, assuming the light holds.

And Middlesex have now more than doubled the Warwickshire score, thanks to this now almost huge Middlesex partnetship of 47 for the seventh wicket between Ryan Higgins and Josh De Caires.

  17. Postpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 25 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 31-2

So close to a third Surrey wicket.

Jamie Smith edges Matt Henry but this one lands short of Craig Overton.

And next ball Smith punches one down the ground nicely for two and then gets four with a lovely drive through the covers.

Trevor Francis (and friends) at Edgbaston, where he was a frequent visitor both during and after his playing days

While they take tea at Edgbaston, hopefully this is the right time for a few words to acknowledge yesterday's shock loss of former Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest and England star Trevor Francis for only 69.

BBC Radio WM's Richard Wilford rightfully took time during the afternoon session to pay tribute to Trevor - and to remind listeners what a big cricket fan this Midlands football legend was.

Aside from many visits across the city to watch a bit of cricket, the hugely popular Francis was friends with many sporting personaltities in the Birmingham area.

And, when he returned to St Andrews as manager, he was also responsible for establishing an annual cricket match betwen the Blues and the Bears.

A first change in the bowling attack for Somerset as Kasey Aldridge replaces Craig Overton.

A hint of respite for the Surrey batters after this testing opening spell.
