It had been sort of forecast. But it has arrived a bit earlier than expected and, with sufficient forced to suggest that it might prove terminal.

Only the hover cover has so far been brought on by the Edgbaston groundstaff to protect the wicket. What they do next will be a sign of whether it is here to stay or not.

Whatever the weather, and whatever the prospects, confimation comes that tea has now been taken.

WICKET Organ lbw b Porter 7published at 15:37 British Summer Time 26 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 & 90-6 v Essex

Three now for Jamie Porter - and eight in the match - as he traps Felix Organ in his crease and Hampshire lose their sixth wicket.

Nick Gubbins has applied himself diligently to reach 35 not out, but he desperately needs some support if Hampshire are going to set any kind of target for the visitors in the fourth innings.

The lead is just 41 as it stands - but the weather isn't looking too good. The floodlights are on already and there are rumours of rain later this afternoon.

  9. wicket

WICKET Dawson b Harmer 10published at 15:18 British Summer Time 26 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 & 79-5 v Essex 169

As predicted, Simon Harmer is indeed the man to take a wicket for Essex - although there was a bit of luck involved in this one.

Liam Dawson steps away, trying to cut a flatter delivery from the spinner and chops it onto his off stump.

Felix Organ is out there now for Hampshire, who lead by 30 with five wickets standing.

  10. 50 runs

for Luke Wellspublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 26 July 2023

    Lancashire 107-0 v Northamptonshire 342

Luke Wells rocks back to the legspin of young Alex Russell and he sends it through the offside for four.

This is a big innings for the Lancashire opener, who has struggled at times in the Championship.

It is a third 50 of the season in which he is only averaging 24.5.

  11. wicket

SURREY ALL OUT FOR 368published at 15:15 British Summer Time 26 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 368 all out

Matt Henry duly obliges and finishes off the Surrey innings.

He has Tom Lawes caught behind and he leads the Somerset players off the field with figures of 6-80.

The Kiwi has bowled beautifully, so it underlines how well the visitors have batted.

Those 99s from Tom Latham and Will Jacks have set them up perfectly as they take a 198-run lead at halfway.

  12. Postpublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 26 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 368-9

Craig Overton has the unwanted ton against his name as Gus Atkinson smacks a six and a four off his latest over.

Atkinson is up to 39 at basically a run-a-ball.

  13. Postpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 26 July 2023

    Notts 350 v Kent 66-1

Ben Geddes has suddenly sprung into life, clattering a string of boundaries off Dane Paterson and he's now caught up partner Toby Albert, on 24 apiece.

for Keaton Jenningspublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 26 July 2023

    Lancashire 93-0 v Northamptonshire 342

Keaton Jennings guides one to deep point for a couple and that's 50.

He has been dropped, he's been hit but crucially for Lancashire, he is not out.

A fourth half century of his Championship summer.

  15. wicket

    WICKET - Mousley c Higgins b Helm 58published at 15:10 British Summer Time 26 July 2023

    Warwickshire 60 & 172-4, Middlesex 199

Dan Mousley falls into a leg trap as he holes out off Tom Helm to the midwicket boundary, where Ryan Higgins takes the catch.

Big breakthrough for Middlesex as, almost three hours after taking their first wicket today, they finally break the 110-run stand between Mousley and Sam Hain.

But it was so avoidable for Mousley, who has clearly been watching a bit too much of the Ashes.

Helm set him up by dropping in a few short, Mousley took it on and played right into the opposition's hands.

New man is Jacob Bethell, the extra bat the Bears chose to bring in for this game. They may be more glad of that now - and, with men of the quality of Ed Barnard and Michael Burgess to come, Middlesex have a lot more work to do yet.

  16. Division Two round-uppublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 26 July 2023

Loser92: 24 wickets down at the Ageas Bowl in just a day and a half. It must be a devil of a pitch to bat on. #bbccricket

We now have more wickets at the Rose Bowl than Edgbaston. The current score is 24-23.

  18. Postpublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 26 July 2023

    Hampshire 120 & 67-4 v Essex 169

You wouldn't say runs are easy to come by, but they're flowing a little more freely for Hampshire now.

Nick Gubbins has advanced to 26 - just overtaking his first innings effort - while Liam Dawson has three and Hampshire are leading by 17.

As is often the case when they're looking for a wicket, Essex are now turning to Simon Harmer...

  19. Five-wicket haul for Matt Henrypublished at 14:59 British Summer Time 26 July 2023

    Somerset 170 v Surrey 354-9

Matt Henry tries the short ball tactic against Dan Worrall. The Aussie takes it on and holes to Sean Dickson at deep third.

A deserved fifth wicket for the Kiwi. He's only been at Somerset for a couple of months but he has had a superb impact.

  20. ouch!

Postpublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 26 July 2023

    Lancashire 79-0 v Northamptonshire 342

A ball from Dom Leech absolutely leaps off the pitch and hits Keaton Jennings high up.

It's hard to tell whether that hits the arm, the gloves or the helmet of Jennings, but it loops up and Justin Broad can't cling on diving forward from short mid-on.

It is not out and Jennings needs some treatment from the physio for that one.
