The BBC UK weather forecast predicts showers but generally turning drier later.

The Midlands looks to have the best outlook - but as well as at Old Trafford, there will be a slightly late start at Edgbaston, due to the sheer force of last night's deluge in Birmingham.

Welcome back to day three of this week's final round of County Championship matches before September.

Although there are one or two late starts, following yesterday's wet weather, most notably at Old Trafford, there are chances of early finishes today in three of the seven matches that started on Tuesday.

In thre battle of third v second at Southampton, Hampshire lead Essex by 73 runs with just four second-innings wickets standing.

At Taunton, Somerset will start their second innings against Surrey trailing by 198 on first innings.

And, at Edgbaston, Warwickshire, on 189-4, lead Middlesex by only 50.

Of course, a lot depends on the weather - and the outlook is mixed.

We also have a bit of cricketing competition today from The Oval, where the final Ashes Test starts between England and Australia. But we hope that our faithful band of followers who prefer county cricket will stick with us for the day.
