    Warner c Bairstow b Woakes 32 (Aus 61-2)

GONE! England had a plan for David Warner with Chris Woakes and the Warwickshire man has executed it.

Warner goes at the first ball of Woakes' over with needlessly hard hands on the drive and edges it into the delighted gloves of Jonny Bairstow.

Woakes, one of the nicest men in cricket, gives Warner a smile by means of a send off.

    A genuine edge.

Ben Stokes is in disbelief at leg slip.

    Eeesh. Close from Mark Wood.

He draws the edge of Marnus Labuschagne's bat but it flies beyond fourth slip.

Nature takes its course, and the sun disappears behind a cloud and we are able to continue.

Mark Wood has two balls left to bowl in his over.

Drinks is the cue for a mass exodus from the top of the ‘party stand’.

There were longer queues for the coffee stalls than the bars when I was making my way here. Something tells me that might be about to change.

Stuart Broad has taken matters into his own hands and has run to the boundary.

He has told members of the crowd in the afflicting section to move themselves out of their existing seats to block the dazzle.

A gentleman sporting a navy blue gilet and cargo pants has also appeared clutching white tape.

There seems to be a bit of a glint or shine off the seats distracting Marnus Labuschagne.

Good light stops play? We've been here before at Old Trafford...

The sun is reflecting off the bolts and base of some unoccupied seats below the sightscreens to the right of the pavilion and is proving a source of irritation for the batters so drinks are taken with two balls of Mark Wood's over remaining.

You may recall the square was turned at the ground here to avoid a persistent problem with reflecting light.

  11. Aus 57-1published at 13.4 overs

A juicy half-volley on leg stump from Mark Wood and Marnus Labuschagne tucks in. He leans into the ball and it flies through mid-wicket to the boundary for four.

No one has ever won a Test match bowling first here at Old Trafford after winning the toss, but we know Ben Stokes likes making history.

Sitting on the runway at Ibiza airport delayed an hour. Bright point is being able to listen to the Test match on TMS.

    Malcolm in Ibiza

Currently in Bari, Italy. Have found a Scottish Pub... that isn't showing the cricket so am listening to TMS. Hoping Mark Wood can bring his own heatwave.

Enjoying the commentary around the pool in Gran Canaria. Even my wife Jeanie is listening. It took 30 years but I think she is hooked after the last game.

David Warner picks up a couple of runs off Chris Woakes' second ball as he and Marnus Labuschagne look to assert Australia's authority after the loss of Usman Khawaja.

I'm not having it that's a temporary stand. It's here every year. Portable. Stick it in the car and take it with you.

  17. Aus 47-1published at 12 overs

The sun is now peeping through the cumulus clouds above Old Trafford and has just bathed the fans in the large temporary stand in sunshine giving them a heavenly appearance. I'm not sure they'll look so innocent later in the day.

Chris Woakes continues after that Mark Wood.

  18. ouch!

    Aus 47-1published at 11.1 overs

Marnus Labuschagne steers a quick delivery from Mark Wood off his legs towards Ben Stokes at leg slip.

The ball bounces in front of the England captain and hits him flush on the ankle, and he immediately yelps in pain.

His colleagues in the cordon - Zak Crawley, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow - are guffawing after it is shown on the big screen.

Stokes inspects his shin and sees the first signs of a bruise emerging.

David Warner is very much engaged over here. Looking very decisive with the way he is going about his work in the Test match today.

  20. Aus 43-1published at 11 overs

Chris Woakes continues to nag and prod at David Warner with some tricky lengths. Eventually the Aussie left-hander is given a loose ball and manages to whip it behind square for a boundary.
