The sign that says 'James Anderson End' is so small. I wonder if they'll make it a bit bigger when he retires.

James Anderson is through another over as the sun turns Old Trafford golden. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne content to milk England's all-time leading wicket-taker for singles for the time being.

First time at a Test match. Cracking ground, weather holding out. Just need some luck and get a couple more down by lunch.

This is only the fifth match in which a team has used four pace bowlers aged 33 or over.
New Zealand did it for three games in the 80s and then you've got to go back to Brisbane in 1928/29, which was Don Bradman's debut.
Far too straight from Stuart Broad and Marnus Labuschagne flicks it down to fine leg for another boundary off the fourth ball.

The pitch has been a bit up and down but there is some definite swing out there.
It might only be sunny in patches at Old Trafford but that will not deter the uber chic Brendon McCullum from sporting wayfarer sunglasses
Stuart Broad is back into the attack but Steve Smith feasts on his second ball. It's a short wide one outside off stump and Smith, his bat humming in the manner of a lightsaber, disposes of it through point.
Smith holds the high elbow pose, then glares back at Broad.

Australia are expecting a lot of runs from this pair.
It's a huge partnership and it can set up the likes of Green, Marsh and Head to play their shots later on.
James Anderson, that familiar uncoiling of his arms as he delivers at the crease, is through a maiden over as Marnus Labuschagne carefully picks his moments to defend and leave.
Can England nick one of these two out before lunch?
Here's that flicker of a chance to dismiss Steve Smith via a Chris Woakes bouncer.
A tough chance for Mark Wood? Or did he get his positioning wrong?

Marnus Labuschagne looks a lot more comfortable today than he has done in the previous Tests.
He's not as fidgety as Steve Smith and he seems much more relaxed at the crease.
Chris Woakes continues to focus his energies on a fourth and fifth stump line to Marnus Labuschagne before he strays on to his legs third ball and the Aussie batter adroitly flicks him for a single.
Steve Smith wears one just below his thigh pad later in the over, but is happy to see it out without any further runs.
Meanwhile, James Anderson is loosening up.
Here is the toothy smile of Chris Woakes after he gets the wicket of David Warner.

Steve Smith scored a double century the last time he played at Old Trafford.
Mark Wood is touching the 93mph mark, but the idiosyncratic Steve Smith seems to have plenty of time as he dabs it into the leg side for a single.
Smith has that glazed, focused, in the zone expression on his face.
Marnus Labuschagne ducks out of the way the penultimate ball of Wood's over - another bouncer.

That was a definite catching opportunity for Mark Wood who was about 10 paces in from the fine leg boundary.
I just don't think he picked it up.

A big moment in this game.
Steve Smith looks in disbelief at the fact he even played that shot. An interesting first ball.
A bouncer from Chris Woakes is skied down to fine leg by Steve Smith on the hook.
It was controlled from the Aussie batter, but it only just clears Mark Wood who is leaping backwards attempting to catch but cannot get a hand on it.
Net result is four runs to the Aussie batter.

“Cry on the telly!” is the song for Steve Smith as he walks out.
But that doesn’t mean the fans don’t know what he’s capable of.
“Get him early or he’ll be batting forever,” a man sat along from me says.

Frustration for David Warner.
He was looking good and did all the hard work of seeing off his nemesis, Stuart Broad.
