I don't think there is a huge amount of moisture in the surface, it's rock hard. The ball is new with a prominent seam and the older the wicket gets it'll be easier to bat on, but this morning session is key for Australia.

Is this the oldest four pronged attack out there - Wood the youngest at 33?

  3. Aus 39-1published at 10 overs

Mark Wood, who falls over a few times on his follow through, has the speed-o-meter clocking him in the early nineties in that first over of his.

Please can you ask Tuffers to say every new batter is key for Australia?? Worked a charm on Khawaja.

Here's that stylish drive down the ground from Marnus Labuschagne I was waxing lyrical about a little earlier.

  6. Aus 34-1published at 9.1 overs

Another bowling change as the impish Mark Wood is thrown the ball.

Wood's first delivery almost creates a run out as Marnus Labuschagne is forced to dive to make his ground at the striker's end following a throw from Ben Stokes on the boundary.

Labuschagne's cable knit jumper now is now soiled. His mother will not be happy.

  7. Aus 32-1published at 9 overs

Stuart Broad will have to wait a little longer for his 600th wicket as he's replaced by Chris Woakes as Ben Stokes makes an early bowling change.

David Warner will be glad to see the back of his bete noire, but England clearly have an alternative plan utilising the consistency of Woakes.

The Warwickshire seamer begins by hitting a length into Warner's hips and there's almost a leading edge from his third ball.

Warner finishes the over with an unconvincing chop which misses the stumps.

You can see Marnus Labuschagne is just trying to get England to bowl at him and leaving as many balls as possible.

  9. Aus 31-1published at 8 overs

    I wonder, indeed, Josh...

James Anderson is worked into the point region by David Warner for three runs before Marnus Labuschagne plays out the rest of the over watchfully.

I wonder who would make an apt 600th for Broad..?

You just feel like something is happening, Broad has got going now. England have got the conditions, they have to stay patient because there is movement, the weather has fallen in their favour again.

Here's how Usman Khawaja was dismissed a few moments ago as Stuart Broad closes in on a bowling milestone for England.

  13. Aus 28-1published at 7 overs

Marnus Labuschagne drives Stuart Broad's fourth delivery for four down the ground with the kind of smooth classical technique us mere mortals would dream of.

Next ball, he's not quite as convincing as he attempts to leave one on the back foot which nips back in and clips his pad. England are interested in a review, only for Joel Wilson to pre-empt them by calling a no-ball.

Broad is getting the ball zipping through, he just seems to have that radar sorted out a bit.

  15. Aus 17-1published at 6.3 overs

David Warner has 12 runs off as many balls faced. Four of them came from this rather nervous defensive prod off James Anderson a few moments ago.

Usman Khawaja walks off to a chorus of “cheerio, cheerio, cheerio” from the massive 8,500 capacity temporary stand.

Stuart Broad bowled that beautifully, he just got his line right. Khawaja is a good wicket to get early.

  18. Aus 16-1published at 6 overs

David Warner scampers a leg bye to get new man Marnus Labuschagne on strike bringing excited chatter from the crowd.

Anderson's third ball to Labuschagne is an absolute peach that skips off the pitch and deviates away to beat the Australia batter's defensive prod.

Anderson has it on a string, as they say in the trade.

That's 599 Test wickets for Stuart Broad and deliciously opens up the possibility of David Warner being the 600th.

Khawaja lbw b Broad (Aus 15-1)

First blood to England! Just the start they wanted.

It's the final ball of Stuart Broad's over and once again Usman Khawaja is squared up on the back foot. This time the ball jags back in to hit him front.

The ball-tracking puts height down to umpire's call.

A big wicket for England given the gritty barnacle-esque capabilities of Khawaja.
