Time for us to leave it there for day three. It has been another outstanding day of Ashes cricket and England are still in command of the fourth Ashes Test.

I'll leave you with Stephan Shemilt's report from Old Trafford as England have hope in battle against the rain.

Today at the Test is currently live on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer. It's repeated on BBC Two at 23:05 BST too.

You can also scroll back through this live page for all the best clips, reaction and analysis.

We'll be back at 08:00 on Saturday morning, hopefully bringing you some cricket, but likely bringing you weather updates. You can keep up to date with the latest forecast on the BBC weather site.

    See you in the morning.

Jonny Bairstow has said that the criticism he's been getting has been "out of order".

  3. 'England have got them'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Australia are on the ropes and whatever happens here, I don't see anything but an England dominant performance at the Oval. England have got them. This is a flat wicket and this Australian side has been out to the short stuff so consistently.

It's a big ask for Australia to come back and do something at the Oval.

  4. 'It was a bit of an onslaught'published at 19:25 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

Australia's Josh Hazlewood speaking to BBC Sport: "The ball has been coming out nicely, we had to slug out there for a while. Bit of an onslaught but the game speaks for itself on the scoreboard there. We're obviously behind quite a fair way but still two more days to go to show some fight.

"There's obviously rain forecast there but cricketers know that the weather can change so we're just looking to do out best and claw back into this game over the next few days.

"We tried a few plans here and there, some stuck longer than others. We learnt a few things and went back to normal at the end.

"The ball was quite soft and we knew if we took the new ball we might get a few wickets and go for some runs as well.

"The score in the series is what it is and we take every game the same. Speaking about this group we have been doing that for a long time whether it's 1-1 or 1-0 we still have the same mindset to go out there and focus on the process.

"There's a lot of behind the scenes work done in the gym and the nets. It's rewarding to come out and play in the three Tests, hopefully after this series I can go back to playing every game."

Warner will hate that dismissal today because people are looking and wondering about his position. His place is under the microscope.

  6. 'Just playing the game and scoring as many runs with the tail'published at 19:20 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

England's Jonny Bairstow speaking to BBC Sport about his 99 not out: "I think you're just playing the game and trying to score as many runs with the tail as you can and to think Jimmy and I put on 65 for the last wicket, those 65 hopefully put us into a position when we do get back out in the field to hopefully force a result."

On Cummins preventing him getting a second to move to his century: "Decent piece of fielding and fair play. That's why I sent Anderson back because they got round to the ball and fielded it well. Jimmy had faced overs from Starc and everyone else. We took runs we could and it's just one of those things."

On the Mitch Marsh catch and whether it helped him: "It's a different skill set and batting and keeping are two different skills and really pleased to take a decent catch down low to my right, and it was something that help get Green and Marsh in quick succession. The momentum to get those two so quickly helped."

For me it's all about team first. For Bairstow to go out and bat like that would have given him confidence and it transferred into his wicketkeeping. Maybe that's what he needed to get things going. You can't blame Jimmy for getting out the way he did.

Mark Wood then returned to dismiss Steve Smith and Travis Head.

It ultimately turned the day entirely in England's favour again.

They have dominated this Test throughout.

There was then another controversial potential catch as Steve Smith edged to Joe Root at slip.

Root initially didn't look convinced but then said "I think that's out".

However the third umpire disagreed and Smith survived.

David Warner was starting to look in good touch for Australia, but the opener once again found a way to get out.

It was good bowling from Chris Woakes, who stayed on a consistent line, and ended up getting Warner to drag on for 28.

Mark Wood then got the breakthrough, removing Usman Khawaja to a thin edge before the tea interval.

  12. 'We've done everything we could have in this game'published at 19:10 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

England's Jonny Bairstow speaking to BBC Sport: "It's been alright hasn't it? We've put ourselves into a position taking four wickets tonight that hopefully, well, we've done everything that we could've done in the game. The weather is the weather. What comes will come and we can control what we have done so far in the game which is score at a rate that puts us in a position that hopefully forces a result.

"I think we've played similarly all series to be quite honest. There's obviously been times in which it's worked and in which it hasn't worked as well but I think the way in which we have gone about it, we haven't changed the way the process has been or the intent has been throughout the series. At times it's been criticised, potentially not worked but at the same time we are sticking to our guns."

If the only thing we are questioning this England side on is if they batted for too long then that's a good thing.

There was also some cheeky running from England, and a lovely shot from James Anderson, which perhaps got the biggest noise of the Test so far from the Old Trafford crowd.

Ben Stokes really enjoyed the partnership anyway...

England then continued to bat and bat and bat.

It surprised a few as England went well past lunch, but what entertainment Jonny Bairstow and James Anderson gave us.

The pair shared 66 for the last wicket as England stretched their lead to 275.

There were some ridiculous shots from Bairstow, who finished 99 not out as Anderson was trapped lbw.

  17. Postpublished at 19:04 British Summer Time 21 July 2023

England then lost four quick-ish wickets as Harry Brook, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and Stuart Broad fell.

That saw the hosts slip from 474-5 to 526-9.

Harry Brook and in particular Ben Stokes help set the tone for England this morning.

The pair ended up sharing 86 for the fifth wicket before Stokes was bowled by Cummins.

What an Ashes, if the British weather does a disservice to the people of England and denies us a grandstand finish at the Oval. Then we have all been robbed of the best finale since the turn of the millennium... possibly ever.
