Wood is running in while hiding the ball, usually a tell tale sign he's trying to find reverse swing. Maybe Ben Stokes was just holding Wood back in the hope that would come into the game.

Mark Wood is going to keep England interested throughout this spell I reckon.

He's homing in on the pads of Steve Smith and it twice threatens to get through the defences but the Aussie batter is equal to it. For now anyway.

    Mark Wood is on.

He got Usman Khawaja with his second ball earlier.

Cheers as soon as Mark Wood takes off his cap at fine leg...

    Back-to-back maidens from Jimmy Anderson.

Mark Wood is twirling his arms round, loosening up. How long before we see him?

    Steve Smith looks ominously good.

He drives Chris Woakes for a couple, before flicking beautifully through mid-wicket for his first boundary.

This partnership could really frustrate England.

Wedding tomorrow, half worried about rain ruining their big day, half worried England won't get the time needed to take the wickets they need.

Jimmy Anderson is allowed to bowl now and starts with a maiden.

Where is Mark Wood? He's bowled one over and took a wicket. We've not seen him since.

    Here we go.

    Out or not?

You decide. Thumbs up for out, thumbs down for not out.

The uneven bounce in this pitch is starting to show again. Maybe it's an evening session thing.

Chris Woakes arrows one into Steve Smith and the bounce surprises him. His hand comes off the bat as he attempts to defend and the ball squirts into point.

And that’s why Root will always be a greater player than Smith. Smith would have claimed that and moaned for hours when given not out. Root knows he’s not sure and gets on with it.

Steve Smith has not liked batting anywhere in the second innings of matches recently.

Since the start of the 2020-21 Ashes in 15 innings his highest score is 35 and average is 21.

Marnus Labuschagne had to help Steve Smith take his guard before that over because Joel Wilson has busy chatting/arguing with the England team.

Apart from that one ball that kept low Stuart Broad has looked a bit flat in this session. I suspect his spell is now over and it ends with Labuschagne pulling to the boundary.

That 'catch' was as out as the one Steve Smith took to dismiss Joe Root at Lords.

    What is going on here?

England want to bring Jimmy Anderson into the attack but the umpires have said he can't bowl at the moment.

He must have been off the field at some stage and hasn't been on the pitch for the relevant time again yet, but England and Ben Stokes are not happy about it.

Anderson walks away initially, but coming back for another word with Joel Wilson.

Chris Woakes is 12-207 for this Ashes series so far and they have all been top eight players.

How good has Chris Woakes been since coming back into the side?

He's removed David Warner, almost got Steve Smith and is a constant danger.

Smith is up and running with a nudge for one.

Could Root's body language have swayed that decision?! Should have channelled his inner Broad!
