  1. 'Why can't we play until 10pm?'published at 10:59 British Summer Time 23 July 2023

More from Joe Root: "I thought we bowled pretty well to Cameron Green, if it changes today we'll just have to adapt and find ways to be dangerous. We'll look at what we can do to take wickets and then take any chances that come our way."

On whether Chris Woakes will be fit to bowl: "Chris is a very resilient guy and if there's any chance to get out there and bowl I'm sure he'll be keen to. He was incredible in the first innings. If everything is all good we'll see him out there and performing."

On whether more could be done to get play: "It doesn't get dark here in England until 10pm in the summer, why can't we just play until we bowl the overs? There's been a lot of chat about not bowling the overs. There are so many different ways of trying to find opportunities to get as much play in as possible. At every opportunity at every stage you should be looking to find ways to get the Test on. We batted in worse conditions at Edgbaston, but that is cricket. You just want consistency in those conditions."

I don't think we'll see the umpires coming out if it's still raining at 11:00am. There is a huge band of rain due to come but it's not here yet. There's a fragmented shower happening at the moment.

  3. 'We've just got to throw everything at it'published at 10:49 British Summer Time 23 July 2023

England's Joe Root talking to BBC Sport: "We just need to get some time out there really. I thought it was a good effort yesterday and it was a shame we didn't get more chance to play and get more overs but that is how it goes. If we get an opportunity today we've just got to throw everything at it. We've been exceptional in this game and it would be a shame if we didn't get a chance to push for the win.

"The wicket was a big moment. It was a big passage of play. We'd changed the ball and it looked like it was going to swing but then the seamers weren't able to bowl, it was frustrating because it didn't feel like the light deteriorated too much. I thought Moeen was very good. At least we've got one open now and Mitch Marsh has to start again. It gives us a chance to break things open and hopefully get one more wicket before the new ball in nine overs.

"The light is out of our control. We can only manage what we can. With how the seamers have bowled it would be great to see them bowl and have the opporunity to show their threat. But the ball is turning at the same time so there is always going to be a chance to take wickets. We'll have to see what happens and be proactive and smart."

Joe Root, who took England's only wicket yesterday, has just been having a quick chat with Alison Mitchell about what we can expect from the day ahead.

We'll have his thoughts shortly. In the meantime you can view a clip of how he dismissed Marnus Labuschagne on day four.

It's gloomy and there's a little bit of mizzle around. There's no covers on the bowler's run-ups on the Brian Statham End currently. It looks a bit grim at the moment.

    BBC Weather

BBC Weather presenter Louise Lear: "Get on with it, is what I say. There will be a lot of sucking of air through the teeth in the weather centre today. Old Trafford is right on the edge of it at the moment, if you look 50 miles to the north it is just chucking it down.

"I'm optimistic you'll start, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed it'll slow down and grind down and stay stationary.

"What Old Trafford has at the moment is as good as it is going to get, get on with it I would advise!

"Once it arrives it will be heavy and it would probably not clear until the end of the day."

It is not raining at the moment. The covers are on but people are braced to remove them.

We'll have an inspection at 11:00 BST. Fingers crossed we'll get some play.

We've all got our own radars and there is some massive rain to the right of us, but it just depends if it comes to us.

In a summer in which there has been less combined swing and seam movement for pace bowlers than in any England Test season since ball-tracking data became available (2006), neither side in this Ashes series has been bowled out for under 220.

It is only the sixth Ashes series out of 72 in which there have been no all-out scores below 200 in the first four Tests.

In 15 Ashes series from 1994-95 to 2021-22, comprising 76 Tests, how many times were (a) Australia, and (b) England, dismissed for under 200?

We've had word from the officials...

If there is no further rain there will be a pitch inspection at 11:00 BST.

This is because of a wet outfield after the heavy rain overnight.

Now, we briefly mentioned the Carioca Cricket Club in Rio de Janeiro yesterday and how their players have dubbed their ground in the Brazilian city, partly in homage to Sir Geoff Boycott, 'the corridor of sun certainty'.

Tom Ruzyllo, who is involved with cricket in Bogota, has got in touch to extol the virtues of their ground in the Colombian capital when it comes to ideal places to beat the rain to play cricket.

"We had the annual Bogota T20 invitational tournament last month," he writes. "We also play on a blistering hot and sundrenched converted polo field just outside the city."

Here's the, ahem, revised playing times for today in light of the delays from day four.

    Morning session: 11:00 - 13:15

    Afternoon session: 13:55 - 16:10

    Evening session: 16:30 - 18:30

All times are BST. It looks highly unlikely we will make a start at 11:00 as things stand, though, so these times will change again in the near future.

Some light drizzle has returned to Old Trafford.

The talk is even when this rain does stop it will take a fair while to dry up the ground.

The players haven’t left the hotel yet.

Ashley Parker: I think if England could get 30 overs of play in like yesterday in today, they would snap your hands off! Aussies batted well yesterday, but England definitely missed a trick with the conditions. Let's see what today brings.

Ben Ellis: Feeling very annoyed! They knew this weather was coming and were willing to play up to 19:30 yesterday. They couldn't have done that on the first three days? Maybe start at 10am? Australia will retain the Ashes in a match they've never been in from the first ball, that's wrong!

Nick The Unit: Most promising rain radar yet as big band of rain appears to be staying north of Manchester. If the ground was 10 miles south, probably be dry most of the day.

    The Sunday Telegraph

The Sunday Telegraph tap into how many English cricket fans are probably feeling this morning on the front page of their sports section.

A picture of Ben Stokes, seemingly caught in prayer, as he hopes for another Ashes 'miracle'.

"Get ready for another cliffhanger as a combination of the weather and Australian cussedness threatens to prevent England levelling the series," writes chief cricket correspondent Nick Hoult.

This is the scene at Old Trafford where the clean up operation is tentatively under way.

We had standing water on the outfield after the heaviest rain yesterday but there’s none of that today so far.

Rob Key has been for a chat with the groundstaff to get the inside info.

It is NOT raining here currently.

Football and golf dominate the back page of the Star on Sunday but the hamper (an old school piece of newspaper lexicon for you there) along the top is given over to the fourth Test.

It focuses on some quotes from England batting coach Marcus Trescothick who said the decision by the umpires to only allow England's spinners to bowl raised eyebrows in the home dressing room.
