  1. 100 runs

    Eng 173-3published at 32.3 overs

    Brook 66, Moeen 25

Applause from the crowd at The Oval as Harry Brook judges the ball to leg for a single - that brings up the 100 partnership.

A hugely valuable one for England.

  2. 6 runs

    Eng 171-3published at 32.1 overs

Short from Pat Cummins and Moeen Ali pulls it over deep backward square for six!

He's batting on one leg and really going for it now. The runs are coming very quickly for England's number three.

  3. Eng 165-3published at 32 overs

Moeen Ali might not be moving too well but Australia will be relieved to see Mitchell Starc seems to be doing better.

He has to sprint round from fine leg and dives to cut off Moeen's flick. Saves three runs.

  4. Eng 163-3published at 31.3 overs

Confirmation - or as good as - that Moeen Ali isn't really able to run now.

Harry Brook puts the ball into the gap at point, it would've been an easy single a couple of overs back but Moeen turns it down.

England are 163-3, where did that come from? Brian Lara used to do that, score in blocks of 10 and it would creep up on you. You would look up and see him on 81 and think, how has he got 81?

  6. Eng 163-3published at 31 overs

Moeen Ali back away again, this time he misses as Pat Cummins - having gone round the wicket - angles it in.

The ball whistles just over the top of leg stump and away for four byes.

Moeen may have decided he's not really able to run ones and twos so he's going to try and score exclusively in boundaries!

Moeen stepped a couple of yards outside off stump. It's a very nice ball, it keeps finding the middle of the bat. Incredible shot, I'm a little bit speechless.

Moeen Ali is warming up for The Hundred early. How dismissive was that?

  9. 6 runs

    Eng 159-3published at 30.5 overs

    That is ridiculous!

Moeen Ali backs away outside leg very early, Pat Cummins follows him but the England left-hander just whips the ball away over deep mid-wicket for six!

    Incredible shot.

  10. How's stat?!published at 14:05 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

Harry Brook has made his fourth score of more than fifty during this Ashes series - more than any other batter. Usman Khawaja and Ben Stokes both have three apiece.

  11. Eng 152-3published at 30.2 overs

Gorgeous shot from Harry Brook. Make that shots - two in a row!

The first is just timed beautifully through the covers, no follow-through, just an immaculate checked drive that races to the fence.

Next up, it's fuller and straight from Pat Cummins and Brook drills it gloriously through mid-on. Four more.

  12. Eng 144-3published at 30 overs

Moeen Ali is OK to carry on and gets back to defend the last ball of the over from Josh Hazlewood.

He's still not moving brilliantly but is going to stay out there for now.

I think Mo might be in a bit of trouble here.

  14. Eng 144-3published at 29.5 overs

We've got a delay as Moeen Ali looks to have done himself a mischief as he jogged through for a single.

It looks like it could be a groin strain.

That cut shot won't make it in but there were plenty of superb shots from Harry Brook on his way to 50...

  16. Eng 143-3published at 29.2 overs

    Moeen 11, Brook 55

Near run-out forgotten, Harry Brook goes back and carves Josh Hazlewood through backward point for four.

    Lovely shot.

Brook would've been out by three yards.

  18. Eng 139-3published at 29 overs

What an over from Pat Cummins!

Harry Brook has batted well, scored quickly but he can hardly lay a bat on the Australia skipper here.

Some nip and extra bounce sees him beaten on the outside edge early in the over and a nip-backer then beats the inside edge fifth ball.

Perhaps a little frazzled, Brook calls for a quick single to end the over. It's never on and Cummins is able to collect the ball and take aim.

He misses the stumps with Brook barely in the frame. Big let-off for the England batter.

  19. Eng 138-3published at 28 overs

Perhaps a slight concern for Australia as Mitchell Starc clutches his shoulder after running in from the boundary and throwing it in.

He went over on it at Old Trafford but was able to return and bowl the following day. He's still holding it now as he waits on the boundary.

One to keep an eye on.

Brook's 50 came off 44 balls, two sixes and seven fours. It's Brook's 11th 50-plus score in Test cricket, this is only his 12th Test. When Brook got his 10th fifty, only two players had scored 10 fifties in fewer innings: Herbert Sutcliffe and Everton Weekes.
