I just want to see a bit more pressure created. Watching the Australians at the end, you wondered where they were going to score.

Usman Khawaja has passed 1,000 balls in this series, the last opener to do that in an Ashes in England was Michael Atherton in 1993. The only other Australian to do that in England was Mark Taylor in 1989.

Usman Khawaja was his usual gritty self and will resume 26 not out, alongside Marnus Labuscahagne on two, on Friday morning.

England would have been hoping for at least two, maybe three, wickets tonight but were only able to pick up David Warner.

They built pressure with eight maidens but weren't rewarded with wickets as a result.

  6. 'We're pretty happy to get up to 280'published at 19:05 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

England batter Harry Brook, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think we've had a good day in the end. We were talking about 250 being a good score at about lunchtime so to get up to 280 we were pretty happy with.

"Australia are so persistent in their lengths, especially Pat Cummins. As soon as he gets a little bit out of the pitch, he's very tough to face - I felt like I got battered on the inner thigh pad all day!

"We ended up scoring at a decent rate but they were bowling really well.

"I know it looks madness when we're all there and scoring quick but we've always had little moments where we have had to rein it in and soak up the pressure. We don't tend to take long to put the pressure back on them."

On Moeen Ali's injury: "He's one of the best in the world at hitting so if he'd last another five or 10 overs, he'd probably have been on about 80."

On his batting: "I've always had fairly fast hands. It makes a difference when I'm looking to score. When I'm just looking to survive I'm pretty useless.

"Go out, express yourself and have fun. We've been so chilled over the past 12 months, why change it now for the last game of the summer?"

On day two: "Hopefully we can bowl some good lines and lengths tomorrow, get a couple of early wickets and see where the day goes."

Here are some of England's best shots today, that don't include Harry Brook.

    Some serious ball-striking in here.

  8. 'Brook is up there, he deals with the best bowlers'published at 19:02 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Harry Brook is right up there, Kevin Pietersen was the best. In the era I played, Pietersen dealt with them. I'm looking at Harry Brook in a similar way, he deals with them really well. He's a great guy to have in the dressing room.

  9. 'Moeen isn't looking too good at the moment'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

England batter Harry Brook talking to BBC's Test Match Special: "They've had a good day bowling us out. When you put a team in, you want to bowl them out in a day. We got up to a respectable total."

His innings: "I felt good today, I got that bit of luck early on, I just tried to put that pressure back on them and play like I have the last 12 months."

His playing style: "Positive, looking to always put the pressure on, backing myself."

On Moeen Ali's injury: "He's not looking too good at the minute, hopefully he can come and bowl some overs for us. He's been a vital player for us, he's a top player, hopefully he gets better soon."

On the intent for the game: "I don't think we've spoken at all, we're just going there enjoying ourselves."

The Oval atmosphere: "If the weather hadn't ruined things last week, it might be different. I'm sure they will get into it."

Do you adore Test cricket, is that where you see your long-term future?: "I wouldn't say I adore it, but I enjoy it. I've enjoyed my time being around the squad. It's been good, let's see what happens."

Ben Stokes has said he will be at the next Ashes, do you hope to be with him?: "Yes, absolutely, it's a long way away, plenty of things can happen."

  10. 'You have to be brave and bowl smart against England'published at 18:58 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

Australia spinner Todd Murphy, speaking to Sky Sports: "That's the worst feeling in cricket knowing you're next in [as nightwatchman] as a bowler. But it's one of those things you've got to do and I'm glad the boys got through to stumps.

"Winning the toss and bowling, the first objective is to bowl them out. We managed to do that, we created a lot of chances - it would've been nice if we could've held on to all of them but it's a good day, all in all. To be 61-1 at the end is nice.

"As a spinner you just want to get into the game and be involved, it was nice to get in nice and early and do a little bit.

"When they're playing the sort of cricket that they are, it almost comes back to one-day cricket where you have to mix and match and be brave at times, and also be smart. Make sure when they're coming at you, it's on your terms."

Chris Woakes and Mark Wood then put on 49 before the latter, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes fell in 19 balls to wrap up the England innings.

283 felt slightly below par, but not massively with scores generally lower at The Oval this year than previous seasons.

Moeen Ali and Harry Brook put on 111 for the fourth wicket before Moeen Ali, who has tweaked his right groin, was bowled looking as he attempted to score quick runs.

Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Harry Brook soon followed as England went from 184-3 to 212-7.

Here's how Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley and Joe Root fell as England went from a brilliant start and 62-0 to 73-3 in the space of four-and-a-half overs.

  14. Postpublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

Glenn might think Australia don't build pressure on England, and I undoubtedly agree - they give away a lot of singles and twos - but the hosts did lose wickets in clusters today.

They slipped from 62-0 to 73-3, 184-3 to 212-7 and 261-8 to 283 all out.

I'll bring you those wickets next.

Ex-Australia bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Bazball is not about building pressure. The big shot is coming, I'm not sure what Australia's thinking here is. You are almost relying on Bazball to try and score too quickly.

Australia think England will got bored of making ones or twos, I can't explain it.

  16. 'Australia too negative in that session'published at 18:46 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

England won't be delighted with the situation, the fact Australia dropped those chances. You've got two contrasting styles, you've got England playing aggressive, Australia attritional. I thought Australia were too negative in that last session. I don't think England will be completely despondent.

  17. Postpublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

Harry Brook was dropped on five and twice edged through a gap in the slip cordon but he played really well for his 85 off 91 balls.

There were well-timed drives, powerful pulls and a gorgeous effortless flick over mid-wicket.

Harry Brook and Todd Murphy have come down to answer some questions.

We'll bring you their thoughts shortly.

Here are the five catches that Australia dropped.

There was also some sloppy fielding.

But at the same time they were superb with the ball. It was a very strange innings.
