Those last two days at Old Trafford was so frustrating. If it was 2-2, this placed would've been rocking, full of banners.

Australia are continuing, as has been the trend in the series so far, to allow England singles wherever they like them.

England take three and a well-run two off Josh Hazlewood.

It's feels pretty quiet at The Oval at the moment.

Further evidence, if we needed it, that Matthew is rivalling Chris Woakes for the nicest man in cricket.

Last night I saw Joel Wilson and his on-field umpiring partner Kumar Dharmasena going out for food together.

I don't know why but it made me feel all warm inside.

  5. Eng 8-0published at 3 overs

Mitchell Starc has started really well.

He follows the lbw shout up with a delivery that gets a little more bounce and bite of the pitch.

It squares Zak Crawley up a little but it slides past the outside edge.

I've seen them given. Not only did it pitch, it swung and seamed as well. In county cricket that gets given.

    A good decision Mr Wilson.

    Oooh!

It's missing off stump by a whisker.

    Australia burn a review.

Has Mitchell Starc trapped Zak Crawley lbw?

The England opener was looking to leave the ball but it swung back in drastically.

    Australia like it a lot.

It's because Zak Crawley is such a tall player. He makes himself even taller. He gets on top of the bounce and he's middled it.

  11. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

Ooh! Ben Duckett advances down the pitches and squirts an outside edge towards slip but it falls just short of Usman Khawaja at third slip.

Four to finish as Zak Crawley stands tall and punches Josh Hazlewood through the covers on the up. Superb shot.

  12. Eng 2-0published at 1.1 overs

    England are up and running.

Josh Hazlewood starts on the hip of Ben Duckett and the left-hander works through backward square for a couple.

I was listening to Zak Crawley in his interview, it sounds like England's players are evolving in Bazball a bit.

    A maiden to start.

You'd have got good odds on that.

The Oval dropped to a deathly silence for that first ball. Nerves?

  16. Eng 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Zak Crawley shoulders arms to the first ball and lets it go through to Alex Carey.

    Looks like some decent carry.

Mitchell Starc is going to bowl the first over.

Will he find any swing movement with the cloudy overheads?

    Thanks Tim.

    How are you all?

I've got a feeling we might see England try and smack Australia round this morning.

  19. How's stat?!published at 10:58 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

    England opener Zak Crawley has a batting strike rate of 90 in the this Ashes series, the highest of any batter in the series for either team (minimum of 25 balls faced);

Only once before in his Test career has Crawley had a higher strike rate in a series when he’s batted in more than one match (91.8 against Pakistan in December 2022).

The players from both sides are standing arm in arm for the national anthems.

The diminutive Ben Duckett, once again, stood between Stuart Broad and Zak Crawley as the camera pans across the sides.

All that pomp and circumstance reminds me it's time to handover to Callum Matthews, who is on hand to take you through the morning session.
