Today, we've got certainly plenty of humidity, it's quite a muggy start to the day and I think we're going to see a bit more of that, some spots of rain coming and going and actually through the afternoon, I'm hoping we will see some more light. The weekend is a mixed bag, some passing showers but largely bright.

Thanks for all your responses to my question from a little earlier.

The answer is Australia have been the faster scoring side in 43 of 58 Ashes series since 1900, including 16 of the most recent 19 (1989 to 2021-22), and 13 out of 14 from 1930 to 1962-63 inclusive.

Ben Stokes is bowling off-spin in England's warm-ups again. He's got bowling coach David Saker alongside him too.

Could he really bowl spin in Moeen Ali's absence?

England did manage to take one wicket before the close yesterday as Chris Woakes had David Warner (24) caught by the diving Zak Crawley at second slip.

This is Jimmy Anderson's worst venue for wickets, it's the only venue in the UK where he goes at over threes. Jimmy is due a five-fer here.

  9. How's stat?!published at 10:34 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

James Anderson had 0.42 degrees average swing in his first spell yesterday - the lowest of all his first spells in this series.

England will think the seamers should do it on this pitch. Stuart Broad loves Ashes cricket and could go on one of those streaky spells. He could be England's man. Mark Wood can provide that bit of extra pace, but bowlers as a whole have to do it.

It's not his fault but Mo has basically been unable to bowl in four out of a possible eight innings so far due to injury. Was always unlikely he'd get through the series after so little red ball cricket.

In addition to 28 July being the anniversary of Ian Botham's Test debut in 1977, England's women also won the first Cricket World Cup on this day 50 years ago.

They beat Australia by 92 runs with Enid Bakewell scoring 118 and Rachael Heyhoe-Flint, pictured holding the trophy aloft, making 64.

Bakewell, who turns 83 in December, is still playing cricket despite two knee replacements.

I think it’s probably about 16? Presumably the Aussies have a higher scoring rate whenever we go down under?

    Billy Stephens, Hampshire

My guess for the quiz is 11. It would be interesting to know how each side has changed through the years/series in terms of scoring rates too.

I'm going to say nine, this is Graham Gooch's favourite number.

We might see a few overs off Joe Root with Moeen Ali struggling. We saw Todd Murphy get a few wickets in the first innings. It is a blow to lose Moeen. Obviously you want your spin bowler there to change the pace, provide a bit of flight and guile if a partnership does develop.

Moeen Ali looks a bit of a glum figure at the moment. He is currently on the outfield chatting away to Australian spin bowling coach Daniel Vettori with his hands firmly planted in his pockets.

The England all-rounder is wearing England's training kit, but hasn't joined in any of the warm-ups thus far having picked up a groin injury yesterday.

  18. 'Brook similar to Pietersen'published at 10:03 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

Harry Brook could have a similar impact for England as Kevin Pietersen, says former captain Michael Vaughan.

Brook, who made his Test debut less than 12 months ago, scored 85 on day one of the fifth Ashes Test to help England to 283 against Australia.

The 24-year-old's attacking style has often been compared to Pietersen, who scored 23 hundreds in 104 Tests between 2005 and 2014.

"He's a real talent, he's right up there," Vaughan said. "He's just got that ability to put really good bowlers under pressure.

"Pietersen, for me, was England's best in the middle of the innings against all of the quality bowlers around the world.

"Around the generation I played, Glenn [McGrath], Warney [Shane Warne], Murali [Muttiah Muralitharan], Dale Steyn, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, all of the quality bowlers of that era, Kevin Pietersen dealt with.

"At times they got him as well, but he dealt with them, and I'm looking at Harry Brook in a similar kind of way."

Fans are slowly starting to filter into The Oval while a few of the Australian batters are having a hit in the practice nets setup on the edge of the square.

It's grey and overcast but the forecast is quite encouraging the day ahead, with only the odd shower forecast. We should not have any major interruptions.
