The first Monday of September has a back-to-school feel about it and some cricketers have settled straight back into the Championship routine.

Durham's Alex Leeds smashed his fifth hundred of the summer to put the Division Two leaders in a strong position against Sussex.

There was 175 from Josh Bohannon for Lancashire against Northants as he became the second Division One batter to reach 1,000 runs this season.

With the ball, the evergreen Keith Barker took 5-32 to put Hampshire in complete control against Somerset.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, 21-year-old Josh de Caires ended with career-best figures of 7-105 as Middlesex restricted Essex to 303-9 after day one at Chelmsford.

But once again, it is the team strength of Surrey that takes the headlines.

They lost their last six wickets for 57 in the morning to only reach 396, but bounced back brilliantly with the ball to take 17 Warwickshire wickets (161 & 126-7) with six for Dan Worrall, five for Kemar Roach and four for Jordan Clark.

The champions and Division One leaders are 109 runs ahead and only need three Bears wickets to wrap up an innings win.

Thanks for your company today. We return at 10.00 BST tomorrow when we expect Surrey to move one win closer to retaining their title.

    Worcs 284 & 127-8 v Glamorgan 170

    Yes they can.

Joe Leach defends into the off-side, and that brings an enthralling day to an end.

Worcestershire were firmly on top having bowled Glamorgan out for 170, and the visitors looked out of it when Azhar Ali and Jake Libby were at the crease with the score 81-1.

However, a remarkable collapse of seven wickets for 46 runs has given Glamorgan a real chance.

The lead currently sits at 241, so if Jamie McIlroy and co can find those final two wickets early tomorrow, they will fancy their chances.

Brett D'Oliveira is still there though, and you only need look at the Worcestershire first innings to see how important his presence is.

The next ball is shorter and he doesn't make good contact with a pull shot, but it flies off the top edge for another boundary.

    Durham 424-5 v Sussex 266 - close

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Durham's Graham Clark has chalked up his second century of the season, adding 159 runs with Bas de Leede.

De Leede has 71 and they have taken Durham into a commanding lead in the heat of CLS.

They came together after Ollie Robinson was out just before tea for 67, while Alex Lees earlier made 103 and skipper Scott Borthwick 56. Lees has 1,255 runs in the championship this year, including five centuries and four half centuries. It's his best year with the bat.

Durham were 305-5 when the new ball was taken but the first 16 overs with it cost Sussex 101 runs, with Clark and De Leede attacking for fun. Clark's first 50 came in 101 balls, but the next 50 took just 42 deliveries and included 9x4s.

Durham took maximum bowling points and look set for maximum batting points too, thus increasing their lead at the top of Division Two over Worcestershire to 45 points.
