    Essex 11-0 v Middlesex

A four off both Toby Roland-Jones and Ethan Bamber for Sir Alastair Cook as he gets the Essex score ticking over.

This is a used wicket at Chelmsford and it is noticeable how much to one side of the square it is.

There will be a few sixes over midwicket in this match guaranteed.

"That is just top-class bowling by Ed Barnard," says BBC Radio London's Mark Church as the Warwickshire all-rounder picks up his second wicket in three balls.

The delivery which removed Cameron Steel flattened the off stump and that one was just as good, cutting back and knocking out middle.

Barnard now has figures of 4-46 - and still has one ball left to complete his 16th over. Warwickshire have a second bowling point.

    Surrey 343-5 v Warwicks

Just what Warwickshire wanted - Ed Barnard claims his third victim of the Surrey first innings, all of them bowled.

Not much Cameron Steel could do about that, it was a cracking delivery, but it ends his 156-run stand with Ben Foakes.

Good call by Bears skipper Will Rhodes to give Barnard the second over in preference to Oliver Hannon-Dalby.

    Worcs 284 v Glamorgan 3-1

Joe Leach strikes with just the second ball of the day to give Worcestershire an early wicket.

It's angled across Eddie Byrom, and the Glamorgan opener can only edge an excellent delivery to Adam Hose at first slip.

    Durham 6-1 v Sussex 266

An early setback for the D2 leaders as Michael Jones falls to the fourth ball of the second day's play at the Riverside.

It's not a great shot - he dangles his bat at a wideish one from Ari Karvelas and Oli Carter does the rest.

Jayant Yadav has taken 16 wickets in six Tests for India

Middlesex had hoped to have India spinner Jayant Yadav in their bowling line-up at Chelmsford this morning.

However, the club has released a statement this morning to reveal that due to visa issues, Yadav did not make it out of India over the weekend as hoped, and so he is unavailable for this match.

They will hope that he can play in their three subsequent Championship matches.

    Surrey 339-4 v Warwicks

No two ways about it for Warwickshire at The Oval - they need wickets, and they need them fast.

Although they have a game in hand on Surrey, victory in this match is pretty much essential.

Ben Foakes - 112 not out - is on strike to face Chris Rushworth.

The news from the middle in Chelmsford is that Essex have won the toss and are going to bat first this morning.

As expected, India bowler Umesh Yadav makes his debut in what looks a very strong bowling unit.

Essex: Browne, A Cook, Westley (c), Lawrence, Critchley, Walter, Rossington (wk), Harmer, Yadav, S Cook, Porter.

Middlesex need points of their own as they look to pull away from the relegation spots as they give a first Championship game of the summer to Joe Cracknell in the middle order - but Jayant Yadav has to wait for his debut.

Middlesex: Stoneman, Robson, Holden, Cracknell, Davies, Higgins, Simpson (wk), de Caires, Hollman, Roland-Jones, Bamber.

Ben Foakes reaches his centuryImage source, Getty Images

Surrey opener Dom Sibley hailed Ben Foakes as a "class act" despite being run out in a mix-up between the pair on day one at the Oval.

Sibley looked well set on 65 when Foakes failed to answer his call for a single as bowler Danny Briggs moved across in front of him.

But Foakes went on to make 112 not out, with Jamie Smith contributing 60, as the Division One leaders put themselves in a strong position against one of their potential title rivals.

"It was a bit tacky early on, as it can get with these 10.30 starts in September, and we had to work hard against the new ball, but then Jamie Smith came in and played a different game to the rest of us. Ben Foakes is also a class act and he played superbly for his hundred," Sibley said.

Hampshire all-rounder Liam Dawson was delighted to mark the return of Championship cricket with a century as Hampshire fought back from 135-5 on the opening day against Somerset.

They need a win to stay in the title picture and Dawson hit 13 fours in a 192-ball knock and ended the day unbeaten on 109.

"The pitch is on the slow side and scoring can be a little tricky at times. But if we can potentially get 350, then we're really in the game," he told BBC Radio Solent Sport.

"No-one's played much red-ball cricket (recently), so ideally I just wanted to try and bat for as long as I could and give myself chance - and it came off."

Leicestershire opener Rishi Patel could become the fourth player to reach 1,000 runs for the season if he can add another 50 to his overnight 60 not out at the Uptonsteel County Ground.

The Foxes dominated the opening day, with pace bowler Tom Scriven taking 4-30 in Gloucestershire's first innings, and he believes Patel's biggest strength this season is consistency.

"Rishi continued how he has been all season. He has put in a lot of hard work and all the boys are chuffed with how well he is playing," Scriven said.

Leicestershire have the One-Day Cup final to look forward to later this month, but he added: "It is important that we park that for now. We are still pushing for promotion."

Dutch all-rounder Logan van Beek insisted Worcestershire were in a "satisfying" position despite being bowled out by promotion rivals Glamorgan on the opening day at New Road.

He marked his Championship debut for the Pears with 53 and shared a 101-run stand with captain Brett D'Oliveira, who eventually ran out of partners on 74.

"We walked into those changing rooms thinking ‘cool, we are in the game with that score,’" van Beek said.

"It felt like any ball could get you out at anytime. The ball never really came on as true as you would like. Every ball felt like a bit of a battle."

In theory, starting a day later than the other seven games in this round could be an advantage for title hopefuls Essex.

But the batting efforts of leaders Surrey against Warwickshire means there may be some additional pressure on Tom Westley's side as they start out against Middlesex.

They have brought in India pace bowler Umesh Yadav for their final three games of the campaign and he has 288 wickets in all international formats.

Middlesex, though, have a Yadav of their own, having signed spinner Jayant Yadav in time for the game at Chelmsford.
