Andy Umeed recognises that he's running out of partners, and turns to his white-ball shots given the need for quick runs.

A thick outside edge flies over the slips for four, before he clears his front leg and smears Keith Barker back down the ground for four more.

    Two wickets in two overs!

And both the set batters have been dismissed.

Matt Critchley is hit in front - the batter thinks he has touched it judging by his reaction but the umpire does out - and he's given out LBW.

Middlesex are fighting back again and it's a first wicket for Toby Roland-Jones.

WICKET Wagner b Dawson 13published at 16:13 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Hants 308 v Somerset 123-8

Neil Wagner heaves Liam Dawson through midwicket for four, as Somerset look to chip away at Hampshire's lead, but he's gone from the very next ball.

The Kiwi seamer rocks back, looking to cut, but it spins back viciously off the pitch and clips the top of middle.

Really well bowled by Dawson, and Somerset are now eight down.

Dan Worrall starts the second over and immediately finds the edge of Kraigg Brathwaite's bat, but the ball falls short of Jamie Overton at slip.

The next one is overpitched and the West Indies opener drives it confidently through the covers for four.

There are 35 overs left at The Oval.

Here comes Kemar Roach as Warwickshire follow on, with BBC Radio London's Mark Church reporting that team-mate Dan Worrall is wearing one of Sean Abbott's shirts.

Will Rhodes and Kraigg Brathwaite open the innings for the second time in the day.

    Roach starts with a maiden.

    Five for Josh de Caires!!

Adam Rossington was starting to bubble along nicely and he tries to hit Josh de Caires out of the ground.

But he only succeeds in picking out the man at long-on and gives the young off-spinner his fifth of the innings.

Excellent first day bowling for a spinner!

    Yorkshire 297 & 27-0 v Derbyshire 247

A flurry of boundaries from Adam Lyth to kick off the Yorkshire second knock.

He's up to 17 off 13 balls already and this could be a lovely final session of batting with that 50-run advantage.

  11. Surrey enforce follow onpublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Surrey 396 v Warwickshire 161 - tea

They are still on their break at The Oval, but it will come as no surprise that Surrey are going to make Warwickshire bat again.

The Division One leaders are on course for their eighth Championship win of the season and if they achieve it, it will bring them 22 points.

That will take them to 205 with two games to play and it will mean that Warwickshire are out of the title equation.

    Essex 226-5 v Middlesex

Adam Rossington guides one from Toby Roland-Jones down to the deep third fence for four.

That sees the burly wicketkeeper move to 36 and this partnership with Matt Critchley is now worth 57 as Essex rebuild their innings after that afternoon slump.

Northants have a new ball in their hand and Ben Sanderson is so close to removing Josh Bohannon with a beauty, which beats everything.

The bottom side desperately want these last four wickets to try to limit Lancashire's lead and get back into this match.

Kemar Roach was the pick of the Surrey attack with 4-64 and surely it is a formality that Surrey will enforce the follow-on with a lead of 235.

Michael Burgess made 54 for the Bears but no-one else reached 30.

Which way is this one going to go?

Miles Hammond adds a single off Colin Ackermann in the final over before tea, which arrives with Gloucestershire exactly 50 runs ahead.

Hammond is 40 not out, with Harry Tector on 10, but wickets can go in flurries on this pitch - with 23 in five sessions so far.

  18. Tea at Southamptonpublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Hants 308 v Somerset 114-7

Andy Umeed and Neil Wagner see off the final over of the session, bowled by Tom Prest, with minimal fuss.

It's been Hampshire's day so far though, and there's a distinct possibility that Somerset could be asked to bat again today.

They still trail by 194 runs with just three wickets in hand.

Umeed has 27 - he's the key man for Somerset.

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

A long session of 37 overs due to the slow Sussex over rate this morning, has seen Durham add 143 for the loss of four wickets

Alex Lees completed his fifth century of the season, an innings full of powerful drives, including eight fours and two sixes, and with half centuries from Scott Borthwick and Ollie Robinson - whose 67 came in just 66 balls - the hosts are in a strong position at tea.

Credit Sussex and particularly Jack Carson who has taken three of the wickets to fall, and with a new ball due in 13 overs the visitors will feel they are not completely out of this match

Josh de Caires has bowled Middlesex back into this innings as Essex's strong position at lunch has fallen away.

Having reached the first interval without the loss of a wicket, the hosts lost their openers, Nick Browne and Alistair Cook, in quick succession to the visiting off spinner.

Tom Westley and Paul Walter were both bowled while not offering a shot to de Caires, who picked up seven on a similar surface earlier in the season at Hampshire.

Liam Dawson took 12 wickets in an innings victory for the hosts in that match at the Ageas and all eyes will be on Simon Harmer here for Essex.

Crucially in this instance, Middlesex appear as though they'll be able to restrict the hosts' first innings but there may still be a sting in the tail yet.
