A ripple of applause from a handful of away fans at Chelmsford as Josh de Caires clips one off his hips for a single to pass the follow-on total.

42 overs and change remaining today. Middlesex will want to get to tea at least without losing another wicket.

    Breaking

    Leicestershire 204 & 168-2 v Gloucestershire 159 & 212

In the end, it was fairly comfortable and Leicestershire remain in the promotion picture with their third Championship win of the season.

Set only 168 to win, they lost both openers with only seven runs on the board, but Colin Ackermann and skipper Lewis Hill used their experience to see them home.

Ackermann drives through the fielder at mid-off for four to end the game and finish unbeaten on 93, with Hill 62 not out.

Their stand is worth 161 and the Foxes take 19 points from the match.

  4. 6 runs

Leicestershire nearly therepublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Leics 161-2 v Gloucs - target 168

Colin Ackermann is down the track and smashes spinner Ollie Price over long-on for six.

Price is shorter of length with the next one and Ackermann rocks back and cuts for four.

He is now 88 not out and has gone past 800 runs for the season in this innings.

  5. wicket

WICKET Azad c Bell b Hartley 30published at 14:36 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 79-2 v Lancashire 524

Sharp, sharp catch from George Bell at short leg as Hassan Azad comes forward to the spinner and the ball squirts off his edge. He'd played nicely for his 30.

Luke Procter comes in to join Sam Whiteman with his side 213 behind. This partnership needs to last for the rest of the day, you feel.

  6. Postpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Leics 148-2 v Gloucs - target 168

Colin Ackermann does like them in that area.

He steers Luke Charlesworth square for four after an otherwise blemish-free over and advances to 76 not out.

    Just 20 more needed.

  7. Postpublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Northants 237 & 74-1 v Lancashire 524

Sam Whiteman has defied the laws of geometry with the finest reverse paddle sweep to the boundary you'll see off Tom Hartley. Finest in every sense of the word.

It's gone to the left of off stump but the right of slip. Incredible.

He follows up with a gorgeous punch through the covers for another four.

Whiteman has 16 from 14 balls in his last dig for the club.

  8. Postpublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 71-4

There's a lot on Cheteshwar Pujara's shoulders now.

He negotiates a Matthew Potts maiden and remains 26 not out.

Sussex need another 168 to make Durham bat again.

  9. wicket

WICKET Kellaway b Van Beek 0published at 14:27 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Glamorgan 130-7 v Worcs - target 260

Ben Kellaway lasts just four balls, and Glamorgan are staring down the barrel.

Kellaway defends with soft hands, and when the ball bounces back towards his stumps, he can't react quickly enough to kick it away, and is bowled.

  10. Postpublished at 14:27 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Leics 140-2 v Gloucs - target 168

    Is the correct word 'inexorable'?

Luke Charlesworth drops short of a length and Colin Ackermann cracks it square for four runs.

Just 28 more needed now by Leicestershire.

  11. wicket

WICKET Higgins b Cook 44published at 14:26 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Essex 304 v Middlesex 143-8

Ryan Higgins is bowledImage source, Rex Features

    Sam Cook has 3-23.

This one kept a touch low but Ryan Higgins was back in his crease and can't prevent it clattering into off stump.

Toby Roland-Jones is the new man. Middlesex are still shy of the follow-on. Will be see a 12-run burst or will they play it safe?

  12. wicket

WICKET Cooke c Libby b Allison 12published at 14:20 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Glamorgan 129-6 v Worcs - target 260

Chris Cooke looks to defend, but the ball balloons up to Jake Libby in the cordon, who takes a good catch diving forward.

The umpire reckons that flicked the inside edge before it bounced up off Cooke's thigh pad, and Glamorgan are six down.

  13. wicket

WICKET Hollman lbw b Cook 20published at 14:18 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Essex 304 v Middlesex 138-7

Sam Cook has a second and Luke Hollmann trudges off. No complaints about this one as it thuds his pads in line.

Josh de Caires is the new man. He has an eightfer, and considers himself a better batter than bowler. What can he do here? Ryan Higgins remains there on 43.

  14. wicket

WICKET Coles c Borthwick b Potts 5published at 14:18 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 70-4

James Coles tries to drive Matthew Potts but edges but the ball isn't full enough and Scott Borthwick pouches it safely at second slip.

    Six wickets needed by Durham.

If our calculations are correct - and they probably aren't - if they win this game and Worcestershire and Leicestershire also win, they will need five points from their last two games to be sure of promotion.

  15. Postpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Leics 130-2 v Gloucs - target 168

    Leicestershire in no hurry.

Colin Ackermann plays out a maiden from Luke Charlesworth and umpire Naeem Ashraf decides that a ball change is necessary.

Another 38 needed by the home side.

  16. 50 runs

for Billy Rootpublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Glamorgan 125-5 v Worcs - target 260

    Shot!

Billy Root drives gloriously through the covers to bring up his 50 from 53 balls.

Like watching his brother in a mirror.

  17. Division Two latestpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Yorkshire 297 & 412-7 v Derbyshire 247

George Hill has become the third Yorkshire batter to depart after posting a half-century, being ousted for a swashbuckling 79.

Matthew Revis is the fourth man to get there, can he convert his 53 into a second first-class century?

The lead is up to 464 with three wickets remaining.

  18. wicket

WICKET Vince c Rew b Wagner 63published at 14:09 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Hants 308 & 251-3 v Somerset 137

A wonderful catch from James Rew does for James Vince.

The Hampshire captain walks across his stumps, looking to put Neil Wagner off his length, but gets a thick outside edge.

With no slips in, Vince could well have expected to pick up four, but Rew springs away to his right and clings on one-handed.

A 162-run partnership comes to an end, and Tom Prest strides to the middle with his side firmly in command.

  19. Postpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Glamorgan 102-5 v Worcs - target 260

Chris Cooke stands up tall and hits Dillon Pennington on top of the bounce through cover point for four.

That brings up Glamorgan's 100, but they're still a fair way away from that target with just five wickets in hand.

  20. wicket

WICKET Alsop st Robinson b Parkinson 18published at 14:05 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 55-3

Parky strikes. And that's a brilliant piece of work by Ollie Robinson.

The ball drifts past the outside edge of Tom Alsop's bat as he pushes forward in defence - it doesn't look like his back foot has moved, but it must have, because Robinson whips off the bails and he is given out.

James Coles comes out to bat with Sussex 180 behind and facing the prospect of a three-day defeat.
