    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 168-5

Impressive by Oli Carter as a short-arm pull off Matthew Potts brings him four runs.

Two poor ones from Matt Parkinson to start the next over and a cut and sweep by Carter also find the boundary.

  2. wicket

WICKET Abell c Vince b Fuller 5published at 16:39 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Somerset 38-2 v Hants - target 502

James Fuller removes Tom Abell, as James Vince takes a really sharp catch at second slip.

Andy Umeed is in at four, and starts nicely, driving Liam Dawson through extra cover to the fence from just his fourth delivery.

  3. wicket

WICKET Pujara lbw Parkinson 51published at 16:35 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 153-5

Durham have the breakthrough and it's the big Sussex wicket!

Cheteshwar Pujara plays forward in defence to Matt Parkinson, but it sneaks past the inside edge and hits the rear pad.

Pujara put on 83 with Oli Carter, who has now been joined by Fynn Hudson-Prentice.

Will Durham finish the job this evening?

  4. 50 runs

for Sam Whitemanpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 153-4 v Lancashire 524

In his final appearance for Northants before returning Down Under, Sam Whiteman has registered half-centuries in both innings.

The 31-year-old eventually fell for 79 in the first innings, how he'd love to push on past that in this one.

The lefty raises his bat after nudging Tom Hartley down the ground for an eye-catching 99-ball knock which featured 10 boundaries.

  5. wicket

WICKET Wagstaff lbw Bess 9published at 16:31 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Derbys 24-1 v Yorks - target 571

Dom Bess didn't bowl at all in Derbyshire's first innings, but it only takes him five ball to take a wicket in this one.

Mitch Wagstaff jabs down a fraction too late on a full-length delivery and the umpire says 'that's out'.

  6. Postpublished at 16:25 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 152-4 v Lancashire 524

After waiting a dozen balls to get off the mark, Saif Zaib carves a beautiful cut shot off Tom Bailey past backward point and to the fence.

The deficit is down to 140.

Nick Browne and Sir Alastair CookImage source, Rex Features

Nick Browne and Alastair Cook are having fun in the sun.

Browne has 27 and Cook has 23 and the lead is up to 175 with all 10 wickets in hand.

21 overs remain in the day. You'd expect that lead to be pushing 250 by stumps at this rate.

  8. 50 runs

for Oli Carterpublished at 16:23 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 152-4

The start of a new Matt Parkinson over and Oli Carter gives himself room to punch it into the off-side and bring up his 50 from exactly 100 balls faced.

It's been a good season by the Sussex wicketkeeper, with over 650 Championship runs scored, but he has yet to register his first century of 2023.

    Is today the day?

  9. Postpublished at 16:23 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Derbys 19-0 v Yorks - target 571

George Hill comes in for a new over for Yorkshire and Harry Came flicks it away fine for four runs.

The next is outside off stump and Came dabs it down to the rope at third man. He is 14 not out.

for Cheteshwar Pujarapublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 148-4

    Cheteshwar PujaraImage source, Rex Features

A pleasant drive through the covers for two runs off Matthew Potts takes Cheteshwar Pujara to his 50 from 95 balls.

Three of his four previous half-centuries this season were converted into hundreds, so there could be plenty of work left for Durham in this match.

Was it Rahul Dravid who was known as 'The Wall'? Perhaps Pujara could be called 'The Barricade', or 'The Palisade'. Take your pick.

  11. wicket

WICKET Lammonby st Brown b Dawson 9published at 16:14 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Somerset 25-1 v Hants - target 502

Tom Lammonby skips down the track towards Liam Dawson, but gets nowhere near the pitch of the ball, and plays for spin where there is none.

It slides past the outside edge, and Ben Brown whips off the bails with Lammonby miles out.

Liam Dawson for the India tour? Let's see those thumbs...

  12. Postpublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 146-4

Who will be first to 50 - Cheteshwar Pujara or Oli Carter?

Neither is in any rush at the moment as leg-spinner Matt Parkinson sends down a maiden to Carter.

Just two runs added in the last three overs - Sussex need another 93 to make Durham bat again.

  13. wicket

WICKET Keogh c Salt b Bailey 29published at 16:06 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 132-4 v Lancashire 524

The 50-run partnership is at an end.

Tom Bailey has nipped one back in, Rob Keogh has pushed outside off and feathered an edge to Phil Salt behind the stumps.

A big blow for Northants hopes of making Lancashire bat again.

Saif Zaib is the new batter, joining Sam Whiteman who is on 33.

  14. Postpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Derbys 2-0 v Yorks - target 571

A couple of early wickets and this could be a very long 32 overs for Derbyshire at Scarborough.

Ben Coad bowls the opening over and there are a couple of runs for Harry Came. Mitch Wagstaff is his top-of-the-order partner.

  15. Postpublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Somerset 16-0 v Hants - target 502

Hampshire did indeed declare at tea, but have been unable to take any wickets since play restarted.

Somerset's victory target is 502 - one for the optimists out there...

  16. Postpublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 118-3 v Lancashire 524

Back underway at Wantage Road and I am loathed to report Tom Bailey is back to a full-run up and full pace.

Rob Keogh is glad though, he's edged a cut-shot over the slips and away for four.

    174 is the deficit.

  17. 'Mountain to climb' for Sussexpublished at 15:50 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durtham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 144-4

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

Sussex are showing much needed application and fight in the shape of Ollie Carter and Cheteshwar Pujara, who have added an unbroken 74 for the fifth wicket.

Before that, a three-day finish looked likely as Matthew Potts dismantled the Sussex top order with a fine spell of quick bowling on a slow pitch, reaching 50 Championship wickets in the process.

Sussex still have a mountain to climb to save this game, and with Worcestershire and Leicestershire both winning, defeat and just three bonus points would put a serious - and possibly terminal - dent in their promotion prospects

  18. Postpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Essex 304 & 21-0 v Middlesex 179

Nick Browne cracks an over-pitched delivery from Ethan Bamber down the ground, beating the dive of Toby Roland-Jones and finding the ropes. Shot.

    The lead is 146.

  19. wicket

WICKET Revis c Scrimshaw b Thomson 106published at 15:45 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Yorks 297 & 520-9 dec v Derbys 247

A six, then out, as Matthew Revis gives spinner Alex Thomson his fifth wicket of the innings, prompting the declaration by Shan Masood.

Thomson's figures are 5-190 from 38.4 overs and his side now face the theoretical task of scoring 571 for victory.

More realistically, they have the task of batting out four sessions for a draw.

  20. Tea at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 15:42 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 144-4

There are few more reliable players on the county circuit than Cheteshwar Pujara.

Patience is certainly one of his strong points and a single off Ben Raine means that the Indian goes in to tea on 49 not out.

Partner Oli Carter is on 45 and they have added 74 since coming together with the score on 70-4.
