WICKET Gay lbw b Bailey 29published at 14:05 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 47-1 v Lancashire 524

Tom Bailey gets one to nip back in at Emilio Gay, who doesn't offer a shot and the finger goes up. He thought he was outside the line, but no.

Another attractive knock comes to a premature close for Gay. He'd dispatched his fifth fine four from the previous delivery.

Sam Whiteman is the new batter, his last knock for the club before returning Down Under.

  2. 100 runs

for Nick Gubbinspublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Hants 308 & 246-2 v Somerset 137

A third Championship hundred of the season for Nick Gubbins, and he's batted wonderfully.

It's brought up with a handsome drive back down the ground for three.

Hampshire's lead now sits at 421... when will James Vince decide enough is enough?

Nick Gubbins whips one through the leg-side for a couple.

    He moves to 97...

    Essex 304 v Middlesex 132-6

Umesh Yadav thought he had wicket number 1,000, strangling Ryan Higgins down the leg side.

Tremendous take from Adam Rossingon, diving low to his left, but the umpire does not think there was any bat on that and the celebrations are swiftly muted.

Higgins has 39 and Luke Hollman 18 and these two look set fair to at the very least make Essex bat again.

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 47-2

Loan signing Matt Parkinson is into the attack now for Durham and he could be in for a long spell.

As the home side showed in their first innings, there aren't too many demons in the pitch.

Tom Alsop is 15 not out and Cheteshwar Pujara has 11.

WICKET Northeast c Hose b Leach 30published at 13:51 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Glamorgan 85-5 v Worcs - target 260

Just as Glamorgan had started to build something of a partnership, Worcestershire strike!

Sam Northeast doesn't quite commit to the drive, and edges through to Adam Hose at first slip.

Northeast turns to check with the umpire that it carried, and is sent on his way.

  7. 6 runs

for Luke Hollmannpublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Essex 304 v Middlesex 117-6

A ball after edging the spinner within inches of the slips, Luke Hollmann has slog-swept Simon Harmer for a mighty maximum.

0-48 for Simon Harmer. from 14 overs... Josh de Caires took 8-106 remember.

Having posted a century partnership, Lewis Hill and Colin Ackermann both reach 50 in the same over.

Hill is there first, from 74 balls, with a nudge round the corner for a single off Zafar Gohar.

Ackermann then sweeps for one to reach 50 for the seventh time this season, this time from 84 deliveries.

  9. 50 wickets for Pottspublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 32-2

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

For the second season in a row, Durham's England bowler Matthew Potts has taken 50 FC wickets, having managed 78 last season.

Team-mate Ben Raine did it earlier in the game and has 51 so far, with Potts on 50. They are the leading bowlers in the division.

Potts has taken both wickets to fall in the Sussex second innings. Tom Clark fell lbw for two and Tom Haines lost his leg stump on 12.

Sussex are in real trouble. They were 239 behind when Durham declared their first innings on 505-9, with centuries for Alex Lees, Bas De Leede and Graham Clark.

Sixth two overs remain today and a lot may depend on what their skipper Cheteshwar Pujara can do with the bat. He's currently on six.

    Glamorgan 81-4 v Worcs - target 260

Billy Root has been struck on the hand by a delivery that reared at him from Dillon Pennington, and needs some treatment out in the middle.

Glamorgan will hope it's nothing serious - he and Sam Northeast have battled well out there, following that mini-collapse before lunch.

He looks alright to me - the very next ball is upper-cut by Root over backward point for four.

A big full toss from Andy Umeed is bunted down to long-on for a single by James Vince.

It takes the Hampshire skipper to 50, and Somerset are being ground into the dirt.

  12. Postpublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Leics 90-2 v Gloucs - target 168

Colin Ackermann pulls a ball from Josh Shaw and that's a poor piece of fielding by Luke Charlesworth, who allows the ball to elude his grasp and reach the boundary.

Shaw is short again with the next one and Ackermann cuts for four to move to 47 not out. Another 70 now needed by Leicestershire.

  13. Five-wicket haul for Jamie Porterpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Essex 304 v Middlesex 100-6

Three fivefers in as many innings for Jamie Porter.

This one seems to hold in the pitch and Max Holden can only mistime it straight back to the bowler for a simple caught-and-bowled. He departs for 30.

Luke Hollmann joins Ryan Higgins (25*). Middlesex are still 55 short of avoiding the follow-on.

  14. Postpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 35-0 v Lancashire 524

Emilio Gay made one of the most beautiful 35s you could hope to see in the first innings, and he's added three classy boundaries in four balls of Tom Bailey here to move to 22.

He made 200 across his two innings at Old Trafford in his last red-ball game too.

    Some player.

  15. Postpublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 23-0 v Lancashire 524

Huge appeal by WIll WIlliams, and especially Phil Salt behind the timbers, for lbw against Hassan Azad.

So much so that the keeper ignores the loose ball which runs away allowing Azad and Emilio Gay to run a leg bye.

Replays suggest that's hit him outside the line as Azad shuffled across his crease.

Northants won't be thinking about the 269 runs they need to make Lancashire bat again, you'd imagine, just taking it an over at a time.

WICKET Haines b Potts 12published at 13:28 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 24-2

    Matthew PottsImage source, Rex Features

What a beauty to bring Matthew Potts his 50th Championship wicket of the season.

Bowled from round the wicket, it cuts away off the pitch and knocks out Tom Haines' off stump.

Very litile the Sussex batter could have done about that one.

  17. Postpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Hants 308 & 188-2 v Somerset 137

Nick Gubbins and James Vince have been looking to reverse-sweep Shoaib Bashir with relatively little success, but when the Somerset spinner drops short, Vince pulls powerfully through the leg-side for four.

The Hampshire skipper moves to 39.

  18. Postpublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 17-1

Ben Raine and Matthew Potts - with exactly 100 Championship wickets between them this season - continue in tandem following the interval at the Riverside.

But Potts drops short and Tom Haines pulls with authority for four runs.

    Leics 83-2 v Gloucs - target 168

Colin Ackermann batting for LeicestershireImage source, Rex Features

Colin Ackermann sweeps the left arm spin of Zafar Gohar. He doesn't time it perfectly, but makes good enough contact to reach the boundary.

He then picks up three from a no-ball, so it costs Gloucestershire five.

Ackermann is 37 not out, two fewer than partner Lewis Hill.

  20. Postpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Essex 304 v Middlesex 74-5

Jamie Porter is bowling the first over of the afternoon session, the 28th of Middlesex's reply, and is already seeking a fivefer.

4-22 before lunch and bang on the money. Can Max Holden (24*) and Ryan Higgins (9*) keep him at bay?
