Actually, it's not quite all over for the season yet at Edgbaston.

Thee hours after the final County Championship game of the season was called off, the players are back on. The Warwickshire players, that is.

While the groundstaff are hard at work rolling, dusting and scarifying the square over to their left, the spare Bears are indulging themeslves in front of the Eric Hollies Stand with a post-prandial game of beachvolleyball tennis/type thing.

Can only safely recognise Oliver Hannon-Dalby from this distance, but I'm pretty sure that's Henry Brookes on the other side of the net.

Oh well, it's another six months before they'll be back out there again. You can't blame them!

  2. Final session underway at Headingleypublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Yorks 175-2 - target 360

A win from here would really warm Yorkshire hearts this winter after a tough season on and off the field.

Shan Masood resumes on 84 not out.

Worcestershire need Masood out early to try and close this game down.

James Wharton has 29 and he's on strike first up, facing Dillon Pennington.

  3. Final session at Canterburypublished at 15:33 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Kent 494 v Lancashire 327 & 344-7

Earlier in the afternoon, it looked like Kent were on course for a victory which would secure their place in Division One next season.

Now they are 177 behind and still have three wickets to take - but a draw will be enough unless Middlesex can bowl out Notts and win at Trent Bridge.

Tom Bailey is 55 not out for Lancashire, with Josh Bohannon just three runs short of passing 50 for the ninth time this season.

  4. Final session at Trent Bridgepublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Notts 91-1 (target 207) v Middlesex

Here we go, then - for the final time this season.

It looks inevitable we will get a positive result here, with Nottinghamshire needing 106 to win and Middlesex chasing nine wickets to somehow save themselves from relegation.

Middlesex consigned the hosts to Division Two when they triumphed at Trent Bridge in 2016 - it looks likely the boot will be on the other foot today.

  5. Tea at Trent Bridgepublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Notts 91-1 (target 207) v Middlesex

Middlesex are staring into the abyss of Division Two cricket unless something spectacular takes place in the final session, with Nottinghamshire well placed for victory.

The visitors need nine wickets in the remaining 36 overs, while Notts are just 106 short of the win with Ben Slater unbeaten on 43 and Steven Mullaney - who's just pulled Tom Helm for two leg-side sixes - on 16.

  6. Tea at Canterburypublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Kent 494 v Lancashire 327 & 344-7

Tom Bailey drives Aron Nijjar through the covers for four to end a satisfactory afternoon session for Lancashire.

They were in trouble on 258-7, but he and Josh Bohannon have shared an unbroken stand of 86 and they lead by 177.

A draw will be enough to keep Kent up, providing Middlesex don't run through the Notts batting line-up in the final session at Trent Bridge.

Bailey is 55 not out and Bohannon - Division One's leading run scorer - has 47.

  7. Tea at Headingleypublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Yorks 175-2 - target 360

Josh Baker is back into the attack just before the interval and James Wharton drives into the off side without quite piercing the field.

However, the last ball is pushed off the back foot behind point for a single - and that's tea.

31 overs left after the break, the weather is set fair and a result is still possible.

  8. Tea at Cardiffpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Glamorgan 74-3 (target 384) v Derbys

Alex Thomson has picked up two wickets two give Derbyshire faint hopes of belatedly registering a County Championship victory this season, but the draw looks very much favourite heading into the final session.

Glamorgan won't be attempting to score another 310, but they'll certainly aim to deny the visitors victory and Colin Ingram is there on 13 not out from 58 balls, while Billy Root has a single to his name.

    It's prize-giving day today.

We brought you a photo earlier of Surrey receiving the Championship trophy at the Ageas Bowl.

Now Durham have got their hands on the Division Two silverware following their innings victory over Leicestershire.

We might be in for a frenetic run chase after tea if Masood stays in.

He's batting with great poise and fluency here - and moves to 80 with a seemingly effortless flick to mid on via the bowling of Pennington.

He's only faced 85 balls for those runs.

James Wharton drives into the on side for one - and then we have a brief pause as a plastic bag blows across the ground.

Pennington is round the wicket and Masood drives through the off side for four.

    Kent 494 v Lancs 327 & 338-7

Jack Leaning comes in from round the wicket and Tom Bailey dead bats into the off-side and runs through for a single to reach his third Championship 50 of the season.

This one has taken him 100 balls and it's been a fine effort for his side, who lead by 171.

We had a bit of a pause in play while another aircraft buzzes over the ground and then Shan Masood unfurls a superb cover drive for his tenth four - off the bowling of Ben Gibbon.

That brings up the 50 partnership for the third wicket in 70 balls.

We have some very pleasant autumnal sunshine over the Headingley ground as Masood gets one more run, stroked through backward point.

Gibbon drops short and Wharton pulls through wide long on for four.

    Kent 494 v Lancs 327 & 333-7

Lancashire surpass their first-innings total as Tom Bailey crashes Joey Evison through the covers for four and two balls later, Josh Bohannon pulls the seamer away for another.

Bailey is 47 not out and Bohannon has 44 - the lead is 166.

    Notts 70-1 (target 207) v Middlesex

Middlesex have a clutch of fielders around the bat as Jayant Yadav keeps pressing away, looking for some turn to bamboozle Ben Slater, but it's not happening for the visitors.

Slater has advanced to 39 not out, with Nottinghamshire making steady progress towards this target of 207.

Still 39 overs left for them to get there - Middlesex need nine wickets to have any chance of preserving their Division One status.

Ben Gibbon is round the wicket to James Wharton, who tucks the ball around the corner for one.

Shan Masood drives the next ball through extra cover for four and runs hard to get two more off the last ball through point.

At the other end, Dillon Pennington bowls a defensive line outside off to James Wharton and completes a maiden.

The equation remains within a run a ball though and Yorkshire have time and wickets on their side.

    Kent 494 v Lancs 327 & 322-7

Kent ringing the changes now. Joey Evison is handed the ball. His 19 wickets in the Championship this season have cost over 51 runs each, but they are hoping he will be a partnership breaker.

Just three runs from it and here comes Yuzvendra Chahal again. Was that a caught and bowled chance or did Josh Bohannon jam it into the ground? Either way, he adds two runs and is 38 not out.

    Kent 494 v Lancs 327 & 314-7

Kent revert to spin from both ends as Yuzvendra Chahal returns to the attack. Just a single from that one but it's another over used up.

Lancashire lead by 148 with 33 more, in theory, to come.

Dillon Pennington comes on for Joe Leach at the Kirkstall Lane End and James Wharton gets a thick outside edge through third man for four.

That takes Yorkshire past 150 in the 34th over.

The hosts look comfortable here and the 360 target is reachable.

36 overs left to get 209.

Maybe still a glimmer here for Derbyshire?

Alex Thomson has picked up his second wicket, with Kiran Carlson losing his balance as he pushed forward unconvincingly against the spinner - although the ball looked as though it might have been sliding past leg stump.

The umpire felt otherwise, though, and Glamorgan are three down, with Bill Root the next man in.

    Shot!

Shan Masood latches on to another short ball from Jo Leach, pulling square with a neat roll of the wrists for four.

Ben Gibbon is in the attack and Masood drives into cover for three.

The ball was in the air for a while but lands safely.

The sound of an aircraft can clearly be heard on the commentary mic as James Wharton drives the next ball defensively back to the bowler.
