OK, it's time! Let's get the women's draft going!

All of the coaches are up on a Zoom screen, so it's not the easiest to actually tell what kind of conversations are going on.

Anyway, Welsh Fire are up first...

'I’d like to see Alex Hartley back at Welsh Fire'published at 16:15 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

I’d like to see Alex Hartley back at Welsh Fire, but to captain them. I want the experienced (two-times winner and I’d pay top fee for her!) Dane Van Niekerk as a top order batter to open with Hayley Matthews and to spin ball in tandem with Alex Hartley. Tammy Beaumont to act as an opener option but primarily to fine tune her wicket-keeping skills. If they can also get Shabnim Ismail for her fast bowling action, then the core are there. Overall there’s a winner’s mentality from a winning combination. Lets see what happens…

  3. What price brackets does each women's team have open?published at 16:14 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

The women's squad will consist of eight players by the end of draft today, with all of the slots filled from £31,250-£15,000. The remaining seven players will be sorted in an open market.

These are the price brackets that each team have slots open in for the draft:

    Welsh Fire: £31,250 x2, £18,750 x2, £15,000 x2

    London Spirit: £31,250, £25,000, £18,750, £15,000

    Birmingham Phoenix: £31,250, £18,750 x2, £15,000

    Trent Rockets: £31,250, £18,750, £15,000 x2

    Southern Brave: £31,250, £25,000 x2, £18,750

    Oval Invincibles: £31,250, £18,750, £15,000 x2

  4. Will the Right to Match play a crucial role in Women's draft?published at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

This will be the first time the women's competition has had a draft, with players signed in an open market in the first two campaigns.

Sides have been able to retain four players - with all doing so apart from Welsh Fire, who now only have two after Annabel Sutherland's withdrawal on Wednesday - and will top up their squads to eight in the draft. They will then complete their squad in the open market.

An important element of the women's draft will be how teams opt to use their Right to Match (RTM). With some high-profile players in the draft, including five of England's T20 World Cup players from just last month, the likelihood is that several teams will use their RTM to secure talent who featured in their squad last season.

Here are some of the RTMs we are most likely to see used in the women's draft.

And there we go! All teams analysed, predictions made... so let's see what actually happens.

The women's draft should be starting any minute soon, but just a couple more (sorry) rules and regulations to explain first.

    Image caption,

Tash Farrant was the leading wicket-taker in 2021 with 18 wickets, before she missed the 2022 competition through injury.

South Africa's Marizanne Kapp is one of the premier all-rounders in the world and England's Alice Capsey has used to The Hundred to catapult her into everyone's mind. That leaves two others for BBC Sport and CricViz to explain why they have been retained.

130 - Opener Lauren Winfield-Hill has a powerplay strike-rate of 130 in The Hundred, the third highest of batters to have faced 100+ balls in that phase.

6.20 - Tash Farrant is another England bowler currently recovering from a stress fracture of the back but such is her ability Invincibles wanted to retain her. Of the ten seamers to have taken 10+ wickets in the Hundred, only Marizanne Kapp and Anya Shrubsole have a better economy rate than Farrant's 6.20.

  7. Who have Oval Invincibles retained?published at 16:08 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Oval Invincibles

    • Marizanne Kapp (£31.25k)
    • Alice Capsey (£25k)
    • Lauren Winfield-Hill (£25k)
    • Tash Farrant (£18.75k)

Last year's winners also made four retentions - three domestic and one overseas. They will add four players at the draft and have two overseas slots available.

Freya Kemp scored 75 runs and took one wicket in the 2022 version of The Hundred.

Smriti Mandhana was recently the most expensive signing in the inaugural Women's Premier League so it was no surprise to see her retained by Brave. Lauren Bell has become an integral part of the England set-up too so BBC Sport and CricViz have focussed on two up and coming England players intead.

30 v 18 - middle-order batter Maia Bouchier averages 30 against pace bowling, compared to just 18 against spin.

62% - a batting or bowling all-rounder? Freya Kemp is currently recovering from a stress fracture of the back but the left-arm quick and left-hander is a seriously promising talent. She scores 62% of her T20 runs back down the ground.

  9. Who have Southern Brave retained?published at 16:04 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Southern Brave

    • Smriti Mandhana (£31.25k)
    • Lauren Bell (£18.75k)
    • Maia Bouchier (£15k)
    • Freya Kemp (£15k)

It's the same tactic for Southern Brave too. Four retentions, one of which is an overseas player. They will make four signings at the draft and have two overseas slot to fill.

    Trent Rockets

Alana King took seven wickets for Trent Rockets in the 2022 tournament.

BBC Sport and CricViz have worked together to help try and explain why teams have opted to retain individuals in their squad. The Sciver-Brunt partnership is well known, so we've focussed on the other two for Trent Rockets:

18% - Opener Bryony Smith hits 18% of the ball she faces in the powerplay (first 25 balls in The Hundred) for a boundary.

3 - Australia leg-spinner Alana King has found 2.8 degrees of turn on average in the Hundred, the third-highest of all spinners to have bowled 100+ balls in the competition.

  11. Who have Trent Rockets retained?published at 16:00 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Trent Rockets

    • Nat Sciver-Brunt (£31.25k)
    • Katherine Sciver-Brunt (£25k)
    • Alana King (£25k)
    • Bryony Smith (£18.75k)

Trent Rockets are another side that have retained four and one overseas star. They will add four at the draft and have two overseas slots available.

Issy Wong has taken eight wickets across the opening two years of The Hundred.

BBC Sport and CricViz have been digging around in the stats trying to uncover why teams have retained certain players ahead of the draft. Amy Jones is England's wicketkeeper and Ellyse Perry is one of the greats of the game, so we have focussed on the other two retentions:

68mph - Pace bowler Issy Wong is the fastest English bowler in The Hundred with an average speed of 68mph.

6.57 v 8.84 - Another pace bowler, Emily Arlott, has an economy rate of 6.57 against right-handers, compared to 8.84 against left-handers.

  13. Who have Birmingham Phoenix retained?published at 15:56 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Birmingham Phoenix

    • Amy Jones (£31.25k)
    • Ellyse Perry (£25k)
    • Issy Wong (£25k)
    • Emily Arlott (£15k)

Birmingham Phoenix are another team that will be making four draft signings and have two overseas slots available.

Bess Heath scored 78 runs off 66 balls in the 2022 competition.

Northern Superchargers have kept more of their upper price brackets free than other teams so will be able to target high-quality players in the draft. But the players they have retained have been effective for them so far.

BBC Sport and CricViz have looked at why Superchargers have kept hold of two of their domestic players:

95% - Wicketkeeper Bess Heath was in the middle order for Superchargers in 2022 and she attacks 95% of the balls she faces at the death (the final 25 balls).

5.89 - Spin in the powerplay (the opening 25 balls in The Hundred) is commonplace in the women's game and left-armer Linsey Smith has a powerplay economy rate of just 5.89.

  15. Who have Northern Superchargers retained?published at 15:52 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Northern Superchargers

    • Alyssa Healy (£31.25k)
    • Linsey Smith (£18.75k)
    • Hollie Armitage (£15k)
    • Bess Heath (£15k)

Are you spotting a trend yet? Northern Superchargers also retained the maximum four and one overseas player meaning they have two slots available and could add both out of their four draft picks.

Emma Lamb scored 136 runs and took two wickets in six games in the 2022 Hundred.

BBC Sport and data analysts CricViz have crunched some numbers and looked at why teams will have retained particular players. Here's why Originals kept two of their players:

5.85 - England's Emma Lamb is a crucial part of the Originals team, both with the bat, at the top of the order, and with her off-spin. She is excellent with the ball against left-handers, conceding just 5.85 per set.

10 - wicketkeeper Ellie Threlkeld has effected ten dismissals behind the stumps in the Hundred (six catches, four stumpings), the third highest behind Carla Rudd (15) and Sarah Bryce (14).

  17. Who have Manchester Originals retained?published at 15:48 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2023

    Manchester Originals

    • Sophie Ecclestone (£31.25k)
    • Deandra Dottin (£25k)
    • Emma Lamb (£18.75k)
    • Ellie Threlkeld (£15k)

Manchester Originals have opted to keep four players and will adding another four to their squad at the draft. They still have two overseas spaces available.

BBC Sport and data analysts CricViz have worked together to explain why teams have opted to retain certain players in The Hundred. Here's why London Spirit have kept hold of two of their players:

2 - New Zealand's Amelia Kerr is one of only two players (along with West Indies' Hayley Matthews) to have scored 1,000 T20 runs and taken 50 T20 wickets since the start of 2022

63% - London Spirit have endured two difficult campaigns but Danielle Gibson has been a standout. The right-arm quick bowls 63% of her deliveries in the middle overs (balls 26-74 in The Hundred), during which she has an economy rate of 6.65.

    Image caption,

Hayley Matthews scored 109 runs and took two wickets in three games in the 2022 competition.

BBC Sport have worked with data analysts CricViz to work out why the teams will have wanted to retain some of their key players.

For each of the women's teams we've picked out two players to focus on (just one for Welsh Fire because of Sutherland's withdrawal). We've tried to go for some of the lesser known players, rather than England or international stars you might have heard of.

2 - West Indies T20 captain Hayley Matthews is one of only two players (along with New Zealand's Amelia Kerr) to have scored 1,000 T20 runs and taken 50 T20 wickets since the start of 2022.
