We anticipated this Test would be a high-scoring game with the warm-up games and the dry conditions, the pitches prepared to be flat. The wickets around England are conducive to batting.

We mentioned Betty Snowball a little while ago. Tammy Beaumont needs quite a few more runs to overhaul her top score, but she is on course to move into the top-five Test scores by English batters in women's Test history.

    Elizabeth 'Betty' Snowball - 189 v New Zealand (1935)

    Rachel Heyhoe-Flint - 179 v Australia (1976)

    Sarah Taylor - 177 v South Africa (2003)

    Nat Sciver-Brunt - 169* v South Africa (2022)

    Heather Knight - 168* v Australia (2022)

    Another four for Danni Wyatt.

She deftly late cuts Gardner and ball hurries away past slip. Did Jess Jonassen get a finger on that? It would have been a remarkable take...

  4. Eng 335-4published at 91 overs

And yet more singles from Beaumont and Wyatt from the bowling of Gardner as they look build their partnership.

Spin's taken three of Australia's four wickets in this innings, they can be forgiven for persisting with it over the new ball.

Australia have used eight bowlers so far but I think this means that bowlers can't get into a spell, you want to settle in instead of bowling two or three overs here and there.

Australia continue with these tandem spinners after lunch. We're now ten overs past their opportunity to take the new ball - it's not been taken yet.

Wyatt and Beaumont work a single apiece from King.

  7. Eng 330-4published at 89 overs

Danni Wyatt is off the mark in Test cricket. She punches a wide-ish delivery from King through the covers.

She attempts another crashing drive through the same area but Annabel Sutherland cuts off a ball that was racing for the boundary.

Burnley-born Elizabeth 'Betty' Snowball (pictured on the left in a match at Arundel) has held the record for England's top Test score for over 88 years dating back to February 1935. She made 189 runs against New Zealand at Christchurch.

It was also, for over 50 years, the record for the highest individual innings in women's Test cricket until Sandhya Agarwal made 190 against England in 1986.

Snowball passed away in December 1988, aged 80.

Ash Gardner has bowled better today than she did yesterday.

Well, that'll settle some of those nerves.

Beaumont drives a wide delivery from Gardner between point and cover to the boundary.

She pushes to mid-on from the sixth delivery to retain the strike.

  11. Eng 319-4published at 87 overs

Beaumont takes a single into the covers from King's final ball to deny her a maiden.

A nervy couple of overs for England, who'll want to settle back down into their pre-lunch groove.

    A reprieve for Tammy!

It's a fair stride down to the wicket to the bowling of Alana King, but it looks like it might be heading onto the stumps.

The ball tracking is her saviour, however. The ball is landing outside leg.

This is so exciting! Danni Wyatt has played 245 white-ball games for England and I asked her on the No Balls podcast if she'd give half of them up for a Test cap and she said 'no, but I really want to play Test cricket' and the change of coach and approach has given her an opportunity.

  17. Eng 318-4published at 85 overs

Here is Danni Wyatt, a Test debutant (remarkably).

Quite a long wait for her first ball in this format as Gardner resets her field.

She fends off the final ball of the over.

I'm not really sure where she was trying to hit that. She didn't get in the right position.

I liked the intent but it was a curious innings from Sophia Dunkley.

    Dunkley b Gardner 9 (Eng 318-4)

    Dunkley goes!

She goes for a big mow off the bowling of Ash Gardner. She's nowhere near and the stumps are splayed behind her.

Quite a strange innings from Dunkley - nine runs from 51 balls, she was frequently attacking the ball.
