Siraj was really keen but umpire Gaffaney wasn't.
Now then!
A huge appeal from Mohammed Siraj, thinking he has Khawaja caught behind.
Or an lbw?
There was definitely a sound, but they opt against a review, and wisely - replays show that it was ball hitting pad.
It's still not easy to bat out there.

India will obviously want to end this innings as soon as possible but have to try not to leak boundaries. I would not be surprised if there are deep fielders early in the innings.
There is a glimmer of hope for India but that is all it is.
Lead by 174
A sigh of relief from Khawaja as he takes a single and avoids a pair.

There have been 12 instances of a team batting second with a deficit of 150 or more and gone on to win the Test.
The last was England's Test in Wellington this year.
Usman Khawaja calmly negotiates the first ball from Mohammed Shami.
Here come David Warner and Usman Khawaja, who will be hoping to avoid a pair.
Here's how Starc wrapped up India's innings for 296.

You feel like India need to bowl Australia out for 130 to have a chance.
You still wouldn't want to be chasing 300 on this pitch but that might be best-case scenario.

Yes, Australia are playing very well but wouldn't most neutrals back them against India in these conditions? How often do India arrive in England and win the 1st Test? Perhaps Steve Smith should remember that England are pretty decent in English conditions too!
Steve, Buckingham
Three wickets for Pat Cummins, even when he had two overturned for no-balls.
Good at bowling.
India are up against it, but they'd be in a lot more trouble without Ajinkya Rahane, whose 89 was a class act.
It took something pretty special to get him out.

Now the Aussies can leave the field with this very handsome lead. The pitch is not going to get easier. You can expect some more uneven bounce.

That is a big lead. It could have been bigger without Rahane and Thakur. India will be happy with the comeback, after yesterday and losing a wicket in the first over this morning.
It has pushed Australia into make a few more decisions than they would like to.
Shami c Carey b Starc 13 (Ind 296)
All out. An attempted pull from Shami at a short ball, and Alex Carey gratefully accepts another catch.
Australia take a commanding lead of 173, but that was a thoroughly entertaining innings from India and impressive fight shown by Rahane and Thakur in particular.
What can India do with the ball? Can they keep the game alive?
They're going to have some fun.
Two from the first ball after a scrambling dive from Marnus Labuschagne, followed by a huge swing and a miss.
Shami is always good value. He shadow-bats afterwards as if he just got that one ever so slightly wrong.
Siraj and Shami will be looking to add to the hard work done by Shardul Thakur today, who reached his third half-century at The Oval in fine style.

How long can this last pair frustrate Australia for?
Siraj has made a pretty good start with that.

There's an edge! They'll have to come back. That is hilarious. I have not seen that before.
Amazing!
An inside edge saves Siraj and Australia's fielders have to come back!
The crowd is digging in now. That's what you get...

That is absolutely plumb. Half the team have left.
