Wonderful innings. He played beautifully and showed a lot of character. Another half-century under pressure from Shardul Thakur.

That is a brave innings. A really good effort. Thakur has been hit more than once. He has worked really hard.
Thakur c Carey b Green 51 (Ind 294-9)
Fifty and out. But a fantastic effort nevertheless from India's number eight.
He tries to hit another big shot down the ground, but can only manage an edge through to the keeper.
Thakur is applauded vigorously by the India fans, who loved every single run of that knock.
Shardul Thakur reached his fifty off 108 balls.

This is Shardul Thakur's fourth half-century in nine Tests, all batting at number eight. It is his third at The Oval.

It will be interesting to see if the Aussies change their relentless line and length if they start to get hit around the ground, or if they'll stick to a plan. Will Boland ever change if Bairstow is hitting him to the rope?

What a counterpunching innings this has been.
Ind 292-8
Shardul Thakur loves The Oval!
He didn't earlier when he was being peppered by Pat Cummins, but another boundary through the covers brings him to a fine, gripping half-century from 108 balls.
A proper gutsy innings.

That is glorious - as straight as it gets. Beautiful.
Glorious!
Shot of the day?
Shardul Thakur is relishing his senior batter status, drilling an over-pitched delivery from Cummins straight past him for four.

This is going to be an interesting phase. Mohammed Shami is not going to hang around.

Re: Ffion's question at 13.30 - absolutely yes. And watching the 'How to win the Ashes' show at lunch time began building the Steve Smith fear as well. But it also reminded me that no matter how knackered Stokes' knee is he's a match winning force of nature. It also made me wish that KP had been allowed to play BazBall!

Four more!
Not quite as convincing this time, as it shoots off the inside edge and down to fine leg.
Oh, and an exquisite clip off his legs for two more! Looks like India are going to go into white-ball mode, and why not.
And that is why Shami wanted the strike!
He thumps Scott Boland down the ground for four.

I am surprised Thakur is trying down singles. Shami has shown enough in the last few years that he should have confidence in him.
Shami got a 56 not out at Lord's two years ago.
Ha. I love the confidence of Mohammed Shami.
He wants a single from the final ball and keep the strike, but Shardul Thakur is not having any of it.

Umesh Yadav was hanging leg side of the ball. The angle of Cummins delivery, you always feel like the ball is coming in to the stumps. As a batter you see that and play on the angle you think it is coming but Cummins has the ability to move the ball away off the seam slightly.
Umesh b Cummins 5 (Ind 271-8)
Well, that is too good.
Full, fast and hitting top of off stump. Good luck to a number nine batter keeping that out.
India grafted so hard to take the momentum with them to lunch, but it has all dissipated since then.

The Australian bowlers will be quietly happy not having to even think about the prospect of bowling again.
