"England have much to be proud of, but now have a very difficult task in overturning Australia's four-point lead to regain the Ashes..." is the verdict of my colleague Ffion Wynne in her report of day five.

You can read her verdict from Trent Bridge following the conclusion of the one-off Test here...

Our highlights programme Today At The Test is slated for 19:00 BST on BBC Two this evening if you missed any of the action from today.

You will also be able to rewind it to the start and watch anytime on BBC iPlayer here when the programme goes on air...

We'll back bright and early on Wednesday for live text commentary of the second Ashes Test involving England's men at Lord's, with Test Match Special on air at 10:25 on Sports Extra.

England's women are next in action on Saturday when they resume their Ashes battle with a T20 against Australia for what is on course to be a sell out at Edgbaston. That match will be live on BBC Two at 18:00 and we will have TMS coverage and live text commentary as well.

Thanks for your company over the past few days.

Cricket statistician on Test Match Special

We're almost done, but before we go here's the answers to my ZaltzQuiz from earlier on today.

Sophie Ecclestone, with 5-129 and 5-63, joins an exclusive list of post Lance Gibbs spinners with five in both Innings of a Test in England consisting only of:

    Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka v England, Oval 1998 – 7-155 and 9-65);

    Shane Warne (Australia v England, Oval 2005 – 6-122 and 6-124);

    Jack Leach (England v New Zealand, Headingley 2022 – 5-100 and 5-66).

Ecclestone was the second spin bowler to take five in both innings in women's Test cricket, after Pakistan's Shaiza Khan, versus West Indies, at Karachi in 2004.

No spinner from any side had even taken five in an innings in the past 16 women's Tests in England, since Clare Connor took 5-65 against Australia at Shenley in 2001.

Australia captain Alyssa Healy: "Very happy. First and foremost, how good is it to have a result? And it's good to be on the right end of it."

On five-day Tests: "When you take the pressure off the captain and the teams to try and manipulate a result, it probably makes it a little bit easier.

"But we'll have to see how it turns out. I know we've got a four-day Test at the WACA in February that potentially might only need four days if it gets really hot.

"Even just a potential reserve day if there was rain wouldn't be such a bad idea."

On the toss: "I got lucky! You always feel a bit lucky but we had no doubts in batting. we knew it was going to be tough in the first hour and a half.

"We knew they were going to bowl really well with that new ball and it's just about hanging in in that instance then trying to bat long and put a pretty good total on the board, which we did.

"They got pretty close to it in the end but we were pretty pleased coming off."

  4. 'More Tests, please!'published at 13:47 British Summer Time 26 June 2023

More from England skipper Heather Knight to TMS: "Ash Gardner was a big threat on the outside edge and potentially we will look how we can play her better. There wasn't a huge amount of spin, but a couple that turned put that doubt in your mind. Credit to Ash, she bowled really well.

"I think it's been a great Test match. We had lobbied hard for the fifth day. If it had been four days it would have petered out and been forgotten. There's a lot experience out there but many of us are learning to play Test cricket.

"I want more! I want to play more Tests. The bowlers might not answer the same, but the girls realising they can do it and kept coming back was great. We will see what happens. We have a Test in India in the winter and we really want to keep playing entertaining cricket. We feel like we are fighting for the format every time we play."

The support is crucial. Even if England lose, you're seeing great cricket. You need to relish these opportunities and see how talented, fearless women carry themselves in sport.

Even if the reason is to inspire then you need to come. I'll be in the crowd with a flag for the next game.

  6. 'Filer was really exciting to watch'published at 13:45 British Summer Time 26 June 2023

More from Heather Knight at the post-match presentation: "Sophie Ecclestone is a captains dream. She is so consistent and on that wicket she was a real wicket-taking threat. I did wonder if I was overbowling her at one stage. She's pretty tired but she's done a great job for the team. She really stepped up and led the team."

On debutant Lauren Filer: "Really pleasing. We picked her because we felt she would have really have an impact and my favourite spell of the Test was hers before lunch yesterday and really got us back in the game. Pace does funny things and it was really exciting to watch."

On the T20s that follow: "We'll reflect on the five days and we've done some amazing stuff. I don't want the girls to be down, we want to play inspiring cricket and I want the girls to be proud of that. T20 is one of our strongest formats."

On a potential knee injury for Nat Sciver-Brunt: "She'll be alright. She bowled a couple of spells yesterday so we're hopeful."

Former Australia batter on BBC Test Match Special

Back-to-back Ashes matches have been highly entertaining led by the likes of Knight and Healy. We're in good hands for the players fighting for this format. These players want to play more and we need to find ways to more Test cricket into the calendar.

  8. Postpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 26 June 2023

More from Australia's player of the match Ash Gardner: "There's still six matches to go and still a lot that can happen in this Ashes series. We have to celebrate this because it's super special. It's the first time I've been involved in a Test match where we've got a result."

On T20s:"We can celebrate this then turn our attention pretty quickly to the T20s. We know how good England are at T20 cricket so we've got to be ready for that first match in Birmingham.

"My game doesn't change a whole heap, I just have to play on instinct. We know what we're good at and it's just sticking to our strengths for long periods."

On Alyssa Healy:"She was fantastic all Test match. It shows how pivotal that can be. Not just to the spin but the quicks as well, standing up to the stumps and taking caught behinds.

"I'm no keeper but I'm sure that's difficult. To know you've got a keeper you can trust behind the stumps is super important."

Winning a Test match is very difficult. Australia felt the pressure from England and they could've lost it. They'll have a celebration and then move to focus on the T20's.

England skipper Heather Knight, speaking to TMS: "Obviously we feel disappointment but a lot of pride about how we approached it by playing entertaining cricket. A couple of evening sessions on day three and four cost us. But I'm proud of the way the girls fought throughout. Should we have won it? I don't know. We made it tough for ourselves last night.

"To get near parity with them after a day and half in the field was brilliant, especially from Tammy Beaumont. She was super zen, in the zone and really relaxed. She's normally full of energy. With Nat Sciver-Brunt not being able to bowl so many overs we had to turn to Sophie Ecclestone with the ball. We called her Merlin because she just doesn't bowl bad balls."

Just joining us on your lunch break?

Here's the highlights from what happened this morning as Australia beat England by 89 runs to win the women's one-off Ashes Test.

We still have plenty of reaction to come so stick around.

    Alex Hartley
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Australia are such a strong side, they've come out on top and ride the pressure much better than England. For me, England should have won that Test match.

If Heather Knight is saying we need to fight then it shows you how positive we are. I don't think England will win the Ashes, but I am feeling more positive than I was 35 minutes ago.

  15. 'We went toe-to-toe with them'published at 13:07 British Summer Time 26 June 2023

England captain Heather Knight at the post-match presentation: "What a game. I've been quite vocal about five days and today shows why. Credit to Australia, they were outstanding, but we went toe-to-toe with them for a long time.

"Tammy [Beaumont] was unbelievable, Sophie [Ecclestone] was like Merlin going from one end. The whole bowling attack deserves credit because with the loss on a bowler to a niggle and they've really dug in hard. It was just two sessions late in the day on day three and four that were the difference. The crowd have really been behind us and it's been great to have them.

"It was in the balance after the first innings, the way Tammy batted and some partnerships in the middle were outstanding, particularly mentally after a long time in the field.

"The way we came back yesterday was unbelievable after a tough session on day three. Credit to that. It was just a couple of sessions where we could have done better. We set out to play entertaining cricket and I think we did that.

"Australia batted well [in the evening session on day three] and took their opportunities to score but we could have bowled better. We perhaps tried to take too many wickets but we came back and kept it simple. That happens in Test cricket, you can have a lull, but the way we came back was unbelievable."

  16. 'This is super special'published at 13:03 British Summer Time 26 June 2023

Player of the match, Australia's Ashleigh Gardner: "I wouldn't have dreamt of it to be honest but it showed having five days in a Test to actually get a result is super important.

"I guess there was a little bit of luck with the conditions out there but as a whole bowling unit, we bowled really well throughout and tried to bowl in partnerships. I guess I was the lucky one to come away with the wickets."

On bowling plans: "As a bowling unit we jus tried to keep the stumps in play as much as possible. I think the English bowlers showed that - balls were bouncing, balls were rolling.

"It was just keeping the stumps in play to keep as many modes of dismissals in play as possible. Thankfully for me, some kept low, some turned.

"Most of mine didn't turn so that was quite a challenge as well. It was just awesome to be able to put a performance in for the team."

On bowling quicker: "It's just my natural pace. I used to be a pace bowler so I probably bowler a bit quicker than other spinners around the world.

"Being able to go up and down pace is super important. Then using the facilities, bowling slower to get slower spin or with more pace. Keeping the stumps in play was the key."

England will be happy it's T20 format next and that's the best opportunity to win. They're at home in a T20 and there will be big crowds, that is going to be a huge plus. It's an uphill battle but England will need their fans and the Barmy Army.

  18. 'Ash just kept going...'published at 12:57 British Summer Time 26 June 2023

Australia's Tahlia McGrath speaking to TMS: "How good was Ash?! She just kept going and kept executing. We just played boring cricket but the whole time we were nervous. Every time there was drinks we were panicking but we did the simple things well.

"We knew we were going to have to bowl really well until we took that last wicket. Yes the pitch was doing a bit but England have been unreal the whole Test match. I love the Dukes ball. It's been really fun learning to bowl with it. The preparation we've done has been really valuable.

"We were cautious coming into this seres. England are playing really well. Playing in away conditions we knew it would be tough, there's still six games to go and we'll celebrate today and then prepare again. The game just changed all the time, with the ball we just needed to stay patient. Lots of really important moments throughout the game."

Ash Gardner put pressure right back on England. Australia held their nerve for longer and it's taken the light away from Tammy Beaumont and Sophie Ecclestone a bit but Gardner deserved that.

Gardner wins player of the matchpublished at 12:54 British Summer Time 26 June 2023

There were some brilliant individual performances in this Test match, not least Tammy Beaumont's double hundred and Sophie Ecclestone's 10 wickets in the match.

However, for her 8-66 in the second innings and match figures of 12-65 almost inevitably Australia's Ash Gardner has been the named player of the match.
